4 First floor From cuneiform to computers 1 6 First floor From cuneiform to computers Numbers, symbols and signals The mechanization of information technology Hall of Fame Office work through the ages The invention of the computer Your trip through time starts at the very beginnings of information technology, with the opportunity to decipher the first characters on 5,000-year-old clay slabs from Mesopotamia. Discover the instruments used to calculate planetary orbits, learn how Gutenberg revolutionised communication technology with movable letters, and meet the switchboard operator of yesteryear. Impressive punched card systems, mechanical calculating machines and other exciting exhibits from the age of industrialisation herald the ever faster pace of development. See how the cultural techniques of writing, arithmetic and drawing pass through various development stages before coming together in the universal machine that is the computer. The Hall of Fame takes centre stage in this section of the exhibition. The biographies and achievements of 15 pioneers of information technology, from Wilhelm Schickard via Herman Hollerith all the way to Konrad Zuse and Heinz Nixdorf, are presented here. 7
