Material for teachers 1 Material for teachers Hello, teacher! Contents This material is compiled for you, regardless of what grade you teach. Below you will find information about arriving at the museum, how to prepare for the visit as well as tips that you can use at the museum and at school after the visit. We hope you will find this useful. Sincerely, Amos Rex art educators Before the visit Arrival The museum s rules Current exhibitions After the visit
Material for teachers 2 Before the visit Registration You can most easily book your independent group visit with our online registration form (amosrex.fi/en/booka-visit/). We ask all groups to register in advance so that we can serve you as efficiently as possible on site. Groups that register in advance can proceed directly downstairs to the ticket counter for groups, without stopping at the upstairs ticket counters. Please note, that when the brand-new museum opens in early autumn, it might be very busy! Teacher briefing Amos Rex s first briefing for teachers will be held on September 12, 2018, at 4 5:30 p.m (in Finnish). You can register for this event by sending an with the subject line Opeinfo to melanie.orenius@ amosrex.fi. You can use that same address to join our distribution list for schools (subject line Opelistalle ). Informative briefings for teachers will be held 1-3 times a year. Planning visit If you already have a valid group booking, you can enter the museum for free to plan your visit and familiarize yourself with the exhibitions. Otherwise, admission with a teachers union membership card is 12. Schoolwork at the museum During the opening exhibition, parts of the museum will be very dark, so we recommend that any written assignments be done after the visit. Mobile phones can be used as notepads and to take pictures (without flash). Note! The teamlab exhibition contains fast-moving pictures and an abundance of noise, so it could be challenging for the extremely sensitive, epileptics or those who suffer migraines. The exhibition space is also partly dark, so it could be scary for the smallest visitors. Otherwise, the exhibition s contents are suitable for people of all ages. Further information on accessibility is on our website at
Material for teachers 3 Arrival When arriving in a group, you can most easily enter the museum from the Lasipalatsi Square, which has an accessible entrance. The closest Metro stations are Kamppi and Central Railway Station. You can reach the museum from both of those stations without crossing busy streets: from Kamppi through Narinkkatori, and from the railway station through the underground pedestrian tunnel (Exit D). Once inside, your group can go directly downstairs. Check in at the downstairs ticket counter to receive admission tickets. School groups and their accompanying teachers/assistants get free admission to the museum. Tickets for students over age 18 cost 5/person if students visit independently without a group. A free cloakroom, storage lockers (some with outlets for charging mobile phones) and toilets are also downstairs. Snacks can be eaten in the foyer, though it might sometimes get crowded. Snacks can also be eaten upstairs in the Bio Rex lobby, when it is available, and in the courtyard weather permitting. The staff will gladly assist you. Little visitors In the downstairs cloakroom, the staff will offer you a large cart or bag to hold the group s outerwear and backpacks. If your group includes absent-minded visitors, you can borrow at the cloakroom a special museum rope that little ones can hold onto to keep the group together while touring the exhibitions. Earmuffs and seat pads, for sitting on the floor, can also be borrowed at the cloakroom. Bigger visitors You re free to linger wherever you like in the museum, so long as you take the artworks and other visitors into consideration. Seat pads can be borrowed at the cloakroom. And, although we recommend viewing the works with your own eyes, the museum also has free WiFi, and you are welcome to post pictures on social media. Please remember, however, that flash is not allowed when photographing the artworks. Note: teachers are responsible for their groups throughout the museum visit. Opening hours Mon 11 am 6 pm / Tue closed / Wed 11 am 8 pm / Thu 11 am 8 pm / Fri 11 am 6 pm / Sat-Sun 11 am 5 pm

Material for teachers 5 The museum s rules (and why they exist) Everyone knows that visitors must not touch the items displayed in the museum. But why? Below are the museum s rules, and why they must be obeyed. A museum s main task is to take care of artworks so that they can be preserved intact forever. The museum commits itself to take care of its own and borrowed artworks, so that visitors can have exhilarating exhibition experiences and see art from around the world. In other words, everybody gains from following the rules!
Material for teachers 6 Rules The artworks must not be touched, unless it is stated otherwise. That is because they could be damaged, but also to ensure they are not soiled. Even clean hands have a thin natural layer of grease, which can corrode the surface of an artwork over time. Good distance must be kept to the artworks. That is because stumbling or even sneezing could be damaging. A good distance from an artwork or the base it stands on means at least 1 metre (1 yard). Visitors must walk through the museum calmly. You can be excited, but must not run so that you don t trip and fall and thereby endanger the artwork or other visitors. Liquids, umbrellas and wet outer garments are not allowed in the museum. That is to ensure that not even a drop of water touches the artworks and so that the museum s precisely regulated climate does not become too humid due to wet jackets or umbrellas. Photographic tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Big backpacks must be left in the cloakroom or in the lockers. Small bags and backpacks (max. 30x30cm) can be carried in hand or on the stomach side. This museum rule, too, is for the security of the artworks the extra appendage of a backpack or shoulder bag on the back can easily bump into an artwork without the wearer noticing it. You certainly don t need to be silent in the museum. You are always free to chat, but we ask that you take other visitors into consideration, so that everyone has a pleasant museum visit. Emotions are allowed in the museum. If you feel like laughing, laugh, and if you feel like crying, that s OK too. And finally: Any instructions given by the museum staff must be obeyed. They are there to serve the visitors. On hand are also special guides whose job is to discuss and answer visitors questions. Please, don t hesitate to chat with them!

Material for teachers 8 teamlab: Massless Aug. 30, 2018 Jan. 6, 2019 The museum s first exhibition comes from a 500-strong Tokyo-based artists group called teamlab. In addition to visual artists, teamlab includes programmers, CG animators, mathematicians, architects, graphic designers and authors. This exhibition presents a great opportunity to discuss with students such topics as artists collectives, the advantages of collaborating and the essence of being an artist. What does it mean to be an artist, and what kind of profession is it? The teamlab artists adhere to the view that all members of the collective are equally important and that no one is more of an artist than anyone else. The exhibition s artworks are entirely digital installations that fill space and stimulate the senses. The works react to the viewer. For instance, the work Graffiti Nature comes alive with figures that visitors colour themselves, and Crows always appears differently depending on how many people are looking at it and how they move in the room. The artworks could be a bit scary for tiny visitors, but otherwise the content is suitable for visitors of all ages! Themes suitable for discussion in conjunction with the teamlab exhibition: Nature, the cycle of nature, Man as part of nature The digital world: art, environment, technology The cross-disciplinary character of contemporary art Japanese art history and artistic techniques Artists collectives, collaboration More information on particular artworks can be found online and in the exhibition s brochure available at the museum.
Material for teachers 9 The Sigurd Frosterus Collection Aug. 30, 2018 Jan. 6, 2019 In addition to temporary exhibitions, Amos Rex displays works from its permanent collection in the Sigurd Frosterus Room, which provides visitors with a colourful artistic immersion. The Sigurd Frosterus Room is the result of collaboration between Amos Rex and the Sigurd Frosterus Foundation. The foundation s mission is to preserve Frosterus s art collection and his intellectual legacy. Sigurd Frosterus s ( ) art collection is one of the first significant private collections of Finnish and foreign modern art in Finland. Most of the works are from when Frosterus was active as an art critic and essayist. Did you know that Frosterus was an architect who designed a building familiar to many people, the Stockmann department store? More information on particular artworks can be found online and in the exhibition s brochure available at the museum. Themes suitable for discussion in connection with the permanent collection: Colour theory Architecture, interior design Art collections, art collecting Colourism, pointillism, modernism, postimpressionism
Material for teachers 10 After the visit After your visit, you can as a group or in small groups discuss your impressions of the exhibitions and the museum. We always want to encourage children, youngsters and adults to talk about art, no matter whether one considers it to be mind-blowing or horrendous. Art is always a personal experience, and no opinion is wrong. You could, for example, use the following kinds of question to start a discussion: Were the artworks in the museum surprising? If yes/no, why? What was the best thing you saw during your visit? Why? And the worst? Justify your opinion with at least two sentences. How did the exhibition feel? Can you find words to describe it? What did the artworks tell about? List at least three things Tips for art classes in the spirt of the exhibition: Animation and video Programming/coding Ink painting Woodcuts/linocuts Collective artwork, in small groups or with the whole class Nature themes Light painting Light installations Elective techniques, inspired by a particular artwork We hope you enjoy your visit to Amos Rex! P.S. The museum is brand-new, so we ask that you please be patient, and we also want your feedback. Our goal is to develop Amos Rex into a brilliant place to visit for school groups, to create rewarding experiences for students and to support teachers in their work. Cheers and jeers can be sent by to: museum@amosrex.fi. Thank you!
