Thanksgiving is just two weeks away, Christmas six weeks away and the end of 2014 just around the corner. There is still time to put your name in for an officer position. We will open up nominations for the third time at the December meeting. If we have more than one person nominated for a position we will take a secret ballot. If we only have one person per position we will take a nomination, second and a voice vote. Step up and take the challenge and share your ideas with our Chapter. You have heard me say several times that this Chapter is only as good as the members make it. The more ideas we have, the more we can do and the more fun we can have. I heard from a couple of you that your bike would not start this weekend. Make sure you are putting your battery tenders on your battery to keep it fully charged. This time of the year when you do not ride much and the weather turns cooler it is hard on your battery. Nothing more frustrating then to have a nice weekend and you want to ride but your bike will not start due to the battery being dead. Don t wait, do it now. I got five years out of my last battery by keeping it on a battery tender. Lastly but most important this month, I want to salute our veterans both past and present. Without them we would not have the freedoms we have today nor would our Country be what it is today. So many have sacrificed so much for us and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Thank you. Veterans! Minutes Vonda Copeland secretary The November meeting of the KS Flint Hills HOG Chapter was called to order on November 10 at 7 p.m. by Director Mike Rhodes. A moment of silence was observed, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Birthdays reported were Shirley Jones 11/2, Karen Connell 11/25, Linda Rush 11/26, and Ronnie Scheller 11/27. Mike & Kelly Markeley celebrated their 16th anniversary on the 7th, and Franklin & Linna Gonzalez celebrate their 21st anniversary on the 19th. New members Desmond & Tawana Lynch were present and ride a 2014 Heritage. Welcome to the group! Brent Graham purchased a 2005 Road King this past Saturday. Correspondence read to the group included a thank-you note from Honey Grant for the donation of $ from our fund raiser to the Toy Run; the 2014 Style Show at CCS will be November 19; November 16 is the Abilene Toy Run meet at 2 p.m. at the Alco parking lot with a chili feed following. It was reported that Gerry Jean broke both bones in his leg and will be out of commission for six weeks, and Dee Hiesterman s uncle passed away recently. Under old business, Director Rhodes reported about 35 bikes for the Toy Run this past weekend. There was a conflict with some of the groups that rode in the Topeka Veteran s Day Parade. Thanks to Santa for riding along on the Toy Run his picture was on the front page of the Daily Union November 10. We received the documentation from National that our group name has officially been changed to the KS Flint Hills HOG Chapter. For new business, the group was reminded of the Christmas Parade on November 28 at 5:30 p.m. don t forget to decorate your bikes! Try to be there around 5 p.m. The Fashion Show is November 19 at 6:30 p.m., seating is limited so pick up your tickets at the front desk. Nominations for the 2015 slate of chapter officers was shared: Director Don Rush; Assistant Director Kirk Meyer; Secretary Vonda Copeland; Treasurer Sue Gwaltney; Activities Carol Ebersole; Road Captain Gerry Jean; Ladies of Harley Claudia Perry; Membership Karen Connell; Editor Wanda Allen; Webmaster Ryan Young; Safety Charlie Gwaltney; Historian Janet Young; Photographer Linda Rush. Nominations will be taken again in December and then we will vote as necessary. Honey Grant was present and personally thanked everyone for participating in the Toy Run. $2500 has been collected so far. Officer reports: Director Mike Rhodes: Mike had the Veterans stand up and be recognized and thanked them for their service. He presented a Director s Coin to Linda Rush for her What Is It series at several meetings. Activities Carol Ebersole: Carol is planning for the After Christmas Party on January 10. If anyone has any ideas for venues, she welcomes all suggestions. Historian Janet Young: The Junction City HOG Chapter was chartered on November 18, Dinner will convene following the meeting for anyone wishing to attend at Tyme Out. Ray Evans won $17 in the 50/50, with $18 going to the chapter. Bozo nominations were: Honey, nominated by Shirley Jones for leaving her car keys in the ignition at Walmart all day when she rode the bus to the Prairie Band Casino. Honey was also nominated by Dan Jones for having the Toy Run stop at the VVPCC for a new flag pole dedication on the 8th when the ceremony was actually on Tuesday, Nov. 11. It was a unanimous vote for Honey to receive Bozo! The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m., with the next meeting scheduled for December 8 at 7 pm. The more time you sit in the saddle watching the miles go by, the horizon change and the sun move from one spot to another, you realize you are getting closer to something as you move further away from where you started. As the scenery changes so does our frame of mind, and as we stop and mingle with the locals, we realize we are all the same no matter where we re from, and they are just as curious about us as we are of them. Where are you from is the universal question, but it really means I wish I had a motorcycle like you. We know deep down we will probably never meet again, so we say our goodbyes until the next gas stop where we start a new conversation about our origination and destination. Reflections about days gone by and past trips come to mind, as well as images of people we ve known our whole life and those we ve met along the way, become clear as the sky above us. Who we are and who we want to be is a constant knot in our head but it all seems to untangle on the road and sort itself out. The greater the distance we ride, the longer we have to sort the dirty laundry we call our life. It s easy to say that when every trip ends we are neatly folded, with a clean and fresh outlook on each and every day. At least until the clothes hamper gets full again. We are determined to make each mile count because as all trips start, they too will end. If only I had one more day or something along those lines always seem to escape from our lips. No one hears it so it just seems to get lost somewhere on the way home. Where does the time go? A week at work lasts what seems like two weeks in non-motorcycle time, but a week s vacation is like a weekend off. Every road trip takes us through a time warp where clocks stop and days disappear right before our eyes, only to reappear during the work week. Ah, so that s where they go. So as we get closer to whatever it is that is pulling us away from the everyday life we live, we know, that at some point that everyday life will win. We return to a normalcy we so tried to outrun; to a place where time didn t matter and the water tasted different. Boy, do I need to do laundry.

5 NOVEMBER Tech Tip Dean Mizes service manager Winter is upon us! Here are a few tips to take care of your bike this time of year. Be sure tires are inflated to the maximum recommended PSI. The gas tank should be filled up, so it s less likely to have condensation. Sitting with clean, fresh oil is better than old, dirty oil. It s much better to be stored clean than dirty. If there is a chance of mice or rats getting to the bike, do something about that like Decon or cats! Working here we have seen what damage can be done by them. Some insurance companies offer a better rate when the bike is stored for the winter. If you need a good place to store your bike, we offer that service here. Having a battery tender hooked up for the winter is a good idea and on some bikes it s a must nowadays if you want the battery to have any chance of lasting through the winter. Monday was so beautiful up to 2 p.m. and then bang the old north wind decided it was time for winter to come along. We were blessed with nice weather for our Annual Toy Run on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Junction City H.O.G. hosted the toy run and around 38 motorcycles came with gifts and cash donations along with others that couldn t ride throughout the day. The toy box was looking good with Santa s gifts of joy for all the girls and boys of all ages. We want to thank Junction City Harley Owners Group, Eagle Riders, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fraternal Order of Eagles [Ladies Auxiliary], American Legion Auxiliary 45, Linda Crech, Sharon Frase, Wayne Yant, from Abilene), Blue Valley Riders (Manhattan) Allan Rothlisberg. Also, Radio Shack for discounting batteries for the toys, and Millison for storage. Many others that gave from $50 to $100. City Cycle Sales toy box will be here through December if you didn t get in on the toy run. The group went for a ride and came back to enjoy pizza and brownies baked by the Ladies of Harley. Scott Templeton made sure the pizza was here when they all came back. Santa came to our party with bells on his boots (he said he had a little trouble shifting on his sled). I have more exciting news. City Cycle Sales is having their Fall Style show from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, and it is FREE. There will be refreshments while you get an up close look of the best Harley-Davidson riding gear and casual wear. The show will start right at 6:30. City Cycle Sales with have their gift wrapping station open the day after Thanksgiving. We have Harley-Davidson wrapping paper and it is free, but a donation is nice for the Zeta Phi Sisters doing the wrapping. City Cycle Sales wants to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving Day, and come in for tips for taking care of your motorcycle through the winter months.
