UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m SECTION I GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1 PURPGSE The AC Plug-in Ground Detector System is used to detect the presence of a ground (within specified limits} on either side of a 60 Hz line circuit. The normal value of the line voltage can be from l05v to 125V, but for simplicity the typical value of 115V is used in the diagrams and descriptions contained in this manual. 1.2 DESCRIPTION The ground detector system consists of two individual plug-in units: a Ground Detector control Unit (GDU), and a Ground Detector Relay (GDR); a transformer/capacitor unit; a capacitor; and three resistors Ground Detector Control Unit (GDU) The ground detector control unit consists of a housing containing a control panel on which are mounted indication lamps, a disconnect switch and push/turn switch for applying test grounds and for resetting the system to the normal operating conditions. This unit is designed for application to a standard size PN-50 plug-in relay mounting base Ground Detector Relay (GDR) The ground detector relay is a type PV-250 relay. This relay is a two element ac vane relay that requires the simultaneous energization of both windings with the proper phase relation between the local and control windings Supplementary Components The transformer/capacitor unit and the capacitor and resistor in series with the control winding provide the proper phase relation between the two signals necessary for relay operation. The other two resistors are used to provide test grounds. 1.3 SPECIFICATIONS Voltage Input a. 115V, 60 Hz. (See 1.1 above) Ground Sensitivity a. BX= 500 ohms b. ex= 100 ohms 4558, p. 1

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m SECTION II INSTALLATION AND OPERATION 2.1 CONTROLS AND INDICATIONS (Refer to Figure 2-1) Ref. Item Function 1 NO GROUND GREEN-indicates that no grounds are present. 2 GROUND 3 DISCONNECT/NORMAL RED-indicates that a ground is present on either line, or a ground has been present and the system has not been reset, or the circuit has been temporarily deenergized. DISCONNECT-this position of the switch removes the ground detector equipment from the ac lines to facilitate locating ground faults that have been detected. NORMAL-this position of the switch connects the ground detector equipment to the ac lines, enabling the detection of ground faults. 4 PUSH ONLY FOR RESET Pushing this button energizes the ground detector relay, initiating operation of the system. Turning this knob to the left (TURN FOR+ OR BX) places a test ground on the BX line, thereby insuring that the detection sensitivity is not lower than the test ground resistance. Turning this knob to the right (TURN FOR - OR CX) places a test ground on the ex line, thereby insuring that the detection sensitivity is not lower than the test ground resistance. 4558, p. 3

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m 2.2 INSTALLATION (Refer to Figure 3-1) The seven parts itemized in Section A-1 (PARTS LIST) are shown in seven dashed rectangles, on the schematic diagram, Figure 3-1. Interconnect these parts according to the wiring scheme shown on that diagram. Measure the normal line voltage (the typical value of 115V is shown on the diagram), then select primary and secondary taps of the transformer per the following chart: Line Primary Secondary Secondary Voltage Taps Taps Volts I05V 1P/2P 1S/7S 43.0V 110 1P/2P 1S/6S P/3P 1S/6S P/3P 2S/7S P/3P 2S/6S 37.8 With wiring completed, perform the post-installation test given in Section 5.1.1, then proceed to Section 2.3 below. 2.3 OPERATING PROCEDURES Initiating Operation a. With all wiring completed and all components in place, set the DISCONNECT/NORMAL switch of the PD-63AC Control Unit to the NORMAL position. b. Depress (do not turn) and hold the PUSH ONLY FOR RESET button until the Ground Detector Relay (GDR) picks up. This is evidenced by the green NO GROUND lamp lighting and the red GROUND lamp going dark. Release the reset button and the NO GROUND lamp should remain lit, indicating that the system is operating and there are no grounds Ground Detection When a ground occurs, the GDR drops, the green NO GROUND lamp goes dark and the red GROUND lamp lights. Place the DISCONNECT/NO~MAL switch in the DISCONNECT position in order to remove the high resistance grounds of the ground detector system so that they will not interfere with the procedure of locating ground faults that have been detected. If in any case, the green lamp is dark, or the red lamp stays lit after resetting, it is recommended that the lines be tested for grounds. 4558, p. 5/6

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m 3.1 NORMAL (Refer to Figure 3-1) SECTION III FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION In normal operation, BX115 is fed through capacitor c, through the front contact 2F of the energized Ground Detector Relay (GDR) to a ground G, then from another ground Gl, through resistor Rl to terminal 10 of the Ground Detector Control Unit (GDU), through the normally closed DISCONNECT/NORMAL switch to terminal 9 of the GDU and then to terminal Cl of the control winding of the GDR and back to CX115. This path provides the proper phase relation to maintain the GDR energized. The local winding, L+/L-, of the GDR is energized from the BX/CX 115 line through the transformer/capacitor unit thus providing the proper phase energy. With the GDR thus energized, B or BX energy is supplied through the front contact, 3F, to terminal 11 of the GDU, through the green NO GROUND lamp and the DISCONNECT/NORMAL switch to terminal 16 and then back to c or ex. 3.2 GROUND If a ground should occur on the BX line, effectively a short is placed across the capacitor c, thereby reducing the phase shifted energy to the control winding and causing the GDR to deenergize. If a ground occurs on the ex line, effectively a short is placed across the control winding and resistor Rl, thereby reducing the current in the control winding and causing the GDR to deenergize. When the GDR drops, the front contact, 3F opens and the back contact, 4B, closes, causing the green NO GROUND lamp to go dark and the red GROUND lamp to light. 3.3 RESET The energy to maintain the GDR is carried over its own front contact, 2F, so that once the relay has dropped to indicate a ground, it cannot pick-up again (even though the ground has been cleared-up) until the PUSH ONLY FOR RESET button is pushed. 4558, p. 7

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m SECTION IV PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 4.1 SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE Daily a. Inspection Every day a visual inspection of the PD-63AC Ground Detector control Unit should be made to ensure that the green NO GROUND indicator is lit. If in any case the green lamp is dark and the red lamp is lit and the red lamp stays lit after resetting, test the lines for ground faults. An alarm indication, controlled by the ground detector relay, may be added to a local control panel Quarterly a. Cleaning NOTE DO NOT USE SOLVENTS OR HARSH ABRASIVES, OTHERWISE EQUIPMENT FINISH MAY BE MARRED. WARNING VOLTAGES AND CURRENT DANGEROUS TO LIFE ARE PRESENT. CAUTION WHEN WORKING NEAR EXPOSED TERMINALS TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY. USE (1) Remove any accumulation of dust and dirt with a soft cloth. Heavy accumulation of dirt or grease may be removed with a mild soap and water, then dry with a soft cloth. b. Inspection (1) Be sure that racks are clean and free of scratches, chipped paint and corrosion. (2) Be sure that all connections are tight and wires are free of nicks, cuts and fraying. (3) Be sure that all connectors are securely fastened and that there are no bent or broken pins. (4) Check that the relay and control unit are securely seated in their bases and that there is no loose or missing hardware. (5) Be sure that controls are securely fastened to the panel and knobs secure on the shaft. 4558, p. 9
c. Performance Test The following test should be made to determine that the detection sensitivity is not lower than the test ground resistance. This test is made by turning the reset knob on the panel of the control unit, thus connecting the BX or ex side of the supply lines to ground through the test ground resistor. (1) Turn (do not push) the PUSH ONLY FOR RESET knob to the left, TURN FOR+ or ~TEST, position and hold in that position for several seconds. After several seconds the Ground Detector Relay (GDR) will drop, causing the green NO GROUND lamp to go dark and the red GROUND lamp to light. (2) Allow the knob to return to its center position and push it to reset the system to its normal operating condition. (3) Turn (do not push) the PUSH ONLY FOR RESET knob to the right, TURN FOR -:--Or ex TEST, position and hold in that position for several seconds. After several seconds the GDR will drop, causing the green NO GROUND lamp to go dark and the red GROUND lamp to light. (4) Again allow the knob to return to its center position and push it to reset the system to its normal operating condition. If the system fails to detect the test ground with the above procedure, the faulty unit may be located by substituting spare units and testing between each change. The faulty unit should then be repaired in accordance with the service manual covering that piece of equipment (see Section 5.2) Biannually (24 months) All vital relays must be inspected and tested at least every two years. The tests and inspections are to include: pick-up current, drop-away current, timing of slow operating and timing relays, visual inspection of contacts for damage or misalignment, corrosion, or other contamination of parts, loose parts inside of cover, broken seal, and cracked or broken cover. Relays not passing the above stated tests and inspections must be replaced and not returned to service until the operating characteristics and conditions are in accordance with US&S specifications. 4558, p. 10
UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m SECTION V TROUBLESHOOTING 5.1 FIELD'TROUBLESHOOTING Perform the procedure found in Section e titled, Performance Test. If the system fails any one of tbe steps it is recommended that the faulty unit be located by substituting a known good working spare for each unit and performing the test between each change. When any unit has been replaced, the test procedure found in the following section titled, Post Installation Test, should be performed to determine the field limits of BX and ex ground detection sensitivity. 5.1.l Post Installation Test This test is used to determine the limits of BX and ex ground detection sensitivity during initial system installation or when a system component has been replaced. This test is not recommended as a replacement for the periodic Performance Test in Section e. a. Remove the wires from the external real grounds, G and Gl, and connect them together to form an ungrounded test ground point. b. With the reset knob in the normal (center) position, check that the green NO GROUND lamp is lit. c. connect a 500 ohm resistor between the BX bus of the supply lines and the test ground point. d. The green NO GROUND lamp should go dark and the red GROUND lamp should light. As long as the 500 ohm resistor is connected, it should not be possible to restore the green NO GROUND lamp permanently by depressing the reset knob. e. Remove the 500 ohm resistor and reset the system by depressing the reset knob. f. Connect a 100 ohm resistor between the ex bus of the supply lines and the test ground point. g. The results should be the same as with the 500 ohm resistor in Step 'd'. h. Remove the 100 ohm resistor, reconnect the grounds, G and Gl, to their original positions and reset the system. 5.2 SHOP TROUBLESHOOTING Troubleshooting, repair or adjustment of the PV-250 (GDR) should be accomplished using the service manual SM4574-E. 4558, p. 11
5.2.1 Ground Detector Control Unit (GDU) a. Resistance Test (1) Connect an ohmmeter between terminals #14 and #15 of the GDU. With the test button in the normal position, the resistance should approach infinity and with the test button in the BX position, the resistance should approach a short. (2) Connect the ohmmeter between terminals #13 and #14. With the test button in the normal position, the resistance should approach infinity and with the test button in the ex position, the resistance should approach a short. (3) Connect the ohmmeter between terminals f18 and ff22.
