7 The 30 Meter Band by Ed Poccia, KC2LM Hams have privileges on the much under used 30 meter band, MHz in the HF portion of the bands. This mere shtikel of a frequency range holds some unique advantages despite its meager size. Let s be clear, this bit of HF heaven is for the CW and digital modes only. Sorry Larry. The features & advantages include: 30 meters opens before forty meters. Once 20 meters starts to fade, you won t have to wait for 40 meters to heat-up before getting back into the action. No contests are allowed on this band, so it remains clear on weekends when 20 & 40 are jammed with contesters. DX pile-ups are smaller due to the general lack of activity on 30 meters. You ll get a better chance to work some of the plentiful DX and perhaps grab that rare one when operating with only 100 watts. Digital Mode Frequencies: PSK-31 on MHz & JT-65 on MHz Look for slow speed CW on MHz (Used by the straight key group, SKCC) Antennas: Yagis & multi-band HF verticals may need their optional 30 meter kit. MFJ has a Hamtenna for $15 that does the job for me. The G5RV and G5RV jr. will tune for 30 meters with the built-in tuners on modern transceivers. I have worked and given good reports to DX hams using OCF dipoles. You have to be mindful to not cause interference to the commercial operators using the band. Be careful at the band edges, especially above MHz where the frequency is particularly active. Ham radio has a history of underuse of frequency privileges, 220 MHz for instance. Use it or lose it, as we say. But in the case of 30 meters, we may be missing out on some of the reasons we got into ham radio in the first place. 7
8 Here is the latest Tri-Band transceiver to hit the market...and it includes 220 MHz!! The Anytone 5888UV-III covers 2 meters, 1 1/4 meters and 70 cm. Claimed output power on the high power setting is 50 watts on 2 meters, 25 watts on 220 and 40 watts on 440 MHz. I purchased one and my unit, as measured on my watt meter puts out 48, 28 and 36 watts on 2, 220 and 440. There are 4 output power levels on each band. It is ironic that the Chinese are coming to the rescue of our 220 band. They have hit the market with several handhelds and base/mobile transceivers. Bill Kent, N5UJC and myself have purchased this rig. The build quality is very good. It has crossband repeater capability. You can crossband repeat 2 meters to 440 and 220 to 440. Dual receivers provide this capability. THE 220 MHZ BAND NEEDS YOUR HELP! The little used 1 1/4 meter band is wide open. It is the perfect place for rag chewing, data work, linking, etc, yet no one makes an effort to even acknowledge this band. I have been an advocate for 220 for 30 years, having a repeater on 220 for the past 30 years. We really should make some effort to use this band, otherwise, we risk losing it. You can purchase some very nice equipment for as little as $160, and I don t mean a handheld. The TYT TH is a 50 watt base/mobile rig in this price range. Jet Stream and Alinco also make 220 base/mobiles. Don t forget the Chinese, who are coming out with $130 tribanders. Questions? Let me know. The club affiliate repeater is up and waiting! If you are interested in getting a rig that covers 220 MHz as well as 2 meters and 70 cm, this radio should appeal to you. You can purchase it from G r a p e v i n e A m a t e u r R a d i o ( h t t p : / / www. grapevineamateurradio.com /sto re/? model_number=at-5888uviii. Cost is $ Shipped free with no sales tax from Grapevine, Texas. I ll look for you on the club repeater! CLUB BADGES We have club badges available.
