ESA partly funds (up to 50%) projects related to the integration and demonstration of activities based on existing technologies that are tailored to pre-operational products, systems and applications with identified market opportunities. 3
4 ESA R&D Overview (2/3) The ARTES Program is structured into different Elements : Programme development - constitutes the strategy component of ESA Telecommunications programme lines. It identifies and evaluates opportunities, future systems and concepts within the space and terrestrial telecommunications markets. Technology- focuses on the consolidation of new system concepts and the development of advanced equipment, subsystems and satellite payloads. User Segment - promotes near-to-market development activitiesin the area of satellite communications that have a direct impact on the user community. User Terminals and Applications are the two main lines of development. Multimedia Systems - to develop and launch complete state-of-the-art interactive multimedia satellite systems services to meet future market needs. Mobility working to shape the future of advanced mobile satellite services. Large Platform mission - development of the large European telecommunications platform based on state-of-the-art equipment from world-class suppliers. In Orbit demonstration - enables European and Canadian industry to demonstrate new payload and platform components in orbit. Inter Satellite Link Demonstrations - enable several linked satellites to work as one, increasing their effectiveness and the size of their terrestrial coverage 4

Possibly different solutions can be investigated. Eventually a cost-effective DVB-S2 receiver implementation is to be proposed together with a set of recommendations/solutions on methods and techniques to reduce the cost of DVB-RCS terminals. 41
42 DVB-S2 Satellite Experiment (New ITT closing date: 27/7/2005) To perform an in-depth verification and optimisation of the many new features present in the DVB-S2 standard through an extensive campaign consisting of field trials and measurements. The activity will focus on verification of the different profiles (broadcast, interactive consumer, professional) of the new standard using a satellite link with particular emphasis on the most critical aspects. The activity will use prototype DVB-S2 modems, modified DVB-RCS return link equipment able to support DVB-S2 and an existing space segment for both Ku and Ka-band. 42
