3 Introduction and commercial background q DVB-S2 standard (EN ) dates back to 2005 o Most advanced modulation and demodulation implementation at that time q Various use cases now demand even more spectrum efficient solutions from industry o Since 2011 proprietary DVB-S2 implementations started to appear q These new implementations considerably outperform the original DVB-S2 standard q A study mission performed by DVB-CM BSS and RCS analyzed these potential performance improvements Slide 3
4 How much enhancement? q Over 20% efficiency gain in a standard DTH satellite transponder q Even over 30% using wideband transponders and/or under high SNR conditions q Measurements using SES txp simulator: o Over 23% at 7.5 db SNR (in 33 MHz txp) o Confirmed by various tests over satellite Slide 4
5 Magic or science? q Efficiency enhancements over DVB-S2 based on o Increased granularity in MODCODs to better exploit the sweet spots o Higher order modulation schemes o Much tighter roll-off (down to 5%) o Eventually applying pre-distortion o Specific low SNR enhancements o Other wizardry Hence we refer to an evolutionary enhancement Slide 5
