Marine Weather Program Shipping Federation of Canada Marine Workshop 2018 Montreal Meteorological Service of Canada Jan 31, 2018
ECCC is actively adapting its marine weather observing systems Network changes and maintenance during summer 2017 and onward Investigating new weather buoy technologies Progress on demonstration project as part of Ocean Protection Plan Page 2 January 31, 2018
Technology, Data, & Partnerships 2017 and onward Marine weather stations heat maps of user requirements (Jan 2017) ECCC is transitioning to smaller buoys over next 5 yrs. Allows for more efficient maintenance infrastructure AIS Messages Over next 5 yrs, upgrading data processing systems on buoys and AVOS ships New data loggers better equipped for AIS Weather data Buoy Convert weather buoy data to SWOB-ML format in 2-3 yrs Currently no plan for 15 minute messages Coastal stations Some coastal stations now transmitting data every 15 mins Collaboration ECCC interested in opportunities to partner with CPA s and OGD s on operation of Marine Network (moored buoys and coastal auto stations) Page 3 January 31, 2018
2017 Update for Atlantic Coast Ship time continues to be intermittent, especially for Atlc Cst (ship time was rescheduled twice) Moorings failed for 5 of 9 buoys in Atlc Cst, and decommissioned 2 recovered; 3 drifted out to sea 4 remaining; 3 operational No significant changes in other regions Page 4 January 31, 2018

OPP Areas of activities: Demonstration project of additional buoys Increase weather information and collaboration in hightraffic ports Adding emergency, wildlife, enforcement resources on both coasts Increase research and response for spills Page 14 January 31, 2018
OPP demonstration project Objective is to strengthen the evidence of the requirement for more comprehensive weather information to support safe navigation for port operations Funding for 5 years Sufficient funding for project to be run for 2 locations (TBD soon) Operational phase would begin in early 2019 Key elements: 2 to 3 weather buoys in each of the two project areas Working with partners to integrate compatible data sources to improve situational picture Data delivered in new formats compatible with e-nav High-detail, short-range forecast information feeding decision-support systems Initiating procurement of Buoys for Ocean Protection Plan (OPP), in Dec 2017 Page 15 January 31, 2018
There is no presumption of an ongoing or expanded national service Project is intended to demonstrate and evaluate the concept of a service Stakeholder feedback throughout the demonstration project will be a primary consideration for the recommendations Recommendations will include ideas for a potential service or services, and how it could be provided By ECCC, or by industry, or???
