7 Pressure Independent Characterized Control Valve TM (PICCV) The Best Way to Control Flow Maintain design flow independent of pressure variations The PICCV is a two-way valve that will supply a specific flow for each degree of ball opening regardless of pressure variations in a system. Flow accuracy ± 5% (5 to 50 PSI) (absolute) Variation due to ± 5% (5 to 50 PSI) manufacturing tolerances Hysteresis 1% (absolute) Operation PICCV consists of a differential pressure regulator in series with a control valve. Regulator Section Control Valve Section The amount of flow that passes through the valve is controlled by the use of a pressure regulator that moves according to the change in pressure above and below it. Water exits valve pressure is P2 (low) All pressure changes are absorbed by the pressure regulator allowing the differential pressure to be held constant over the control valve section thereby giving the same flow. Water enters valve pressure is P1 (high) Water passes through regulator, disc, and ball pressure drops Ports sense pressure drop and transfer it through this channel below regulator Low pressure pulls regulator down against the spring force hence reducing the regulator opening, reducing the flow. 7

12 Pressure Independent Characterized Control Valve with Floating, Non-Spring Return Actuator, P/T Ports (Optional) A p p l i c a t i o n : The Pressure Independent Chara c t e ri zed Control Va l ve is typically used in air handling units on heating and cooling coils and fan coil unit heating or cooling coils. Some other common applications include unit ventilators and VAV re-heat coils. This va l ve is suitabl e for use in a hydronic system with constant or va ri a ble flow. 53 Available Customized Flows and Certified Factory Calibrated Flows Customized Flows* PICCV s are available in a wide variety of the standard maximum flow rates as listed. This allows you to match the design flow rate much more accurately then it was possible with the selection of Cv-value of a conventional valve. If you want to customize the maximum flow rate of a PICCV you can do so, as noted in the increments in the table below. In an additional process we will set the PICCV to a specific flow rate to match your design flow, as noted in the table below. 56 Instructions for Field Adjustment of Flow and Valve Sizing and Selection Instructions for Non-Spring Actuator Utilizing the FlowSetR Non-Spring Return Actuator: LRB24-3 Default set-up: FlowSetR The factory setting corresponds to the ordered flow rate (selected from Belimo s standard product range). The valves factory setting is in open position (valve always closes in CW direction). PICCV flow can be field adjusted by using a hex tool. T h e r e fo r e, the maximum flow can be increased or decreased within the va l ves adjustable flow ra n g e. Integrated Hex Tool To set or adjust desired maximum flow (actuator, FlowSetR and valve are connected): 1. Fully close the va l ve via actuator control signal or via manu a l ove r ride (press button and turn handle in clockwise direction). N o t e : The FlowSetR fixed clockwise end stop purposely p r events the actuator from returning to its full ze r o - d e gree position, eliminating excess rotation. 2. Use the integrated hex tool in the actuator lever to turn adjustment screw in plus (+) or minus (-) direction in order to move scale indicator to desired flow ra t e. A standard hex tool (i.e. Allen wrench) size 5/32 or 4mm can also be used to turn adjustment screw. Sizing and Selection of PICCVs To select the proper flow rate and actuation for your application: Sizing of the Pressure Independent Chara c t e ri zed Control Va l ves is based on GPM, and there is no need to calculate Cv ra t i n g. Pressure Independent Chara c t e ri zed Control Va l ves are 2 - way va l ves that operate between a 5-50 PSI operating ra n g e. For example: If an application requires 4 GPM: Select the valve rated for 4 GPM. In the catalog, this part number is the PICCV For example: If you wish to narrow the flow to 3.5 GPM: Narrowing the flow to 3.5 GPM can be achieved with the use of the FlowSetR if you have the LRB24-3 actuator. With the use of a 5/32" or 4 mm hex tool, the flow can be adjusted in the field. For all other MFT actuators, you may reprogram to 3.5 GPM using the PC software and following the MFT guidelines. Note: Please note that PICCV bodies have a range of flow. Consult page 51 and 52 for details. For example, the valve body PICCV can maintain flows from 0.50 GPM to 1.0 GPM, and the PICCV can maintain flows between 1.5 GPM to 5.5 GPM. There will be two Pressure/Te m p e rature ports as a standard o f fe ring for the 1-1/4" va l ves and larger, and ava i l a ble as an option for the 1" va l ves and smaller. The Pressure/Te m p e ra t u r e p o rts will be reflected in the part number as "PT". i.e PICCV PT + LF24-MFT US. The remaining step is to select the type of actuation, based on your requirements. Prior to ordering, please provide whether you wish to have the valve normally open or normally closed, and if spring return actuation is required, please note whether the valve is to spring open or spring closed upon power loss. 57 PICCV Test and Balance Procedure, Troubleshooting PICCV Test and Balance Procedure 1. Verify that the system is purged and filled to the proper pressure. 2. Verify pump rotation. 3. Open all valves through the building management system if the total connected load➀ matches the pump GPM. Systems with diversity must have a percent of the valves closed to match the pump GPM. 4. Test total flow by accurate method.* 5. Decrease the pump speed until a flow decrease occurs. 6. Increase the pump speed until the original flow is reestablished. 7. Record system ΔP and provide this value to the ATC contractor. 8. Perform a Practical Test to verify that the designer s intent has been met. Taking a leaving air temperature can quickly verify the operation. *Accurate Methods Calibrated circuit setters on main lines Orifice Venturi Equipment pressure drops if the components are clean Ultrasonic Flowmeter Pump curves and triple duty valves have less accuracy than the above listed items PICCV Troubleshooting 1. Is reset temperature high enough? B. Is air by-passing the coil? C. Are all coil areas heating/cooling uniformly? 11. Room cold complaints: A. Is there enough throw➁ to penetrate air to the occupancy level? ➁Throw is the distance discharge air is propelled in order to reach the occupant level. B. Test discharge air temperature and stratification. C. Is the building under a negative pressure? D. Is the hot water temperature at design? Resets may not be effective for reheat coils. GOOD IDEAS: Install taps on at least one valve with the largest DP requirement, or near the end run or near the DP transmitter. ➀Total connected load is the summation of all terminal GPM. Often, engineers will design a pumping system for the total GPM as listed for all of the coils. Some engineers will take advantage of diversity and realize that no more than ± 80% of the valves will be calling at any one time during normal operation. For instance, if you have 100 GPM of total connected load, a pump sized for 80 GPM could be installed. In this case, if all valves open after a weekend of being closed, none of the valves will handle the design flow rate. A requirement of 20% of the valves would have to be closed to match the pump to the total connected load. 57

Our PICCV va l ves are ava i l a ble in flows to 100 GPM. To a c h i eve flows larger than this, it is recommended to connect t wo of these va l ves in parallel leading to a common manifo l d. To correctly operate these va l ve s, the Belimo Multi Function Technology (MFT) will be employed to utilize one common control signal. For ex a m p l e, the first va l ve will be outfitted with an MFT actuator that will correspond to a 2-5 or 2.6 VDC signal. The second va l ve would be outfitted with an MFT actuator that would correspond to a 6-10 VDC signal. T h e r e fo r e, through a single 2-10 VDC output, the full flow range will be achieve d. The actuators will be wired in a parallel arra n g e m e n t. The established configured P Codes are P for 2-5 V D C, P for 2-6 V D C, and P for 6-10 V D C. This recommended application provides the control of flows up to 200 GPM by using two va l ve s.the top diagram details va l ves piped in a parallel arra n g e m e n t. 65 Pressure Independent Characterized Control Valve Heat Pump Applications Optimize Your Heat Pump Application by Using a Pressure Independent Characterized Control Valve What are the benefits? A balanced system is achieved without the need for a balancer to manually balance each circuit. Because the system is dynamic and the PICCV performs dynamic balancing, Differential Pressures are no longer an issue to be concerned with. The PICCV will maintain a constant flow at part load and during morning warm-up when all loops become critical. With the PICCV, each terminal gets the required flow, no over-flow or under-flow at this critical time. The PICCV allows a mechanic to easily commission additional circuits after the initial system is up and running, again thanks to dynamic balancing capability. The PICCV is available in flow rates from.5 GPM to 19 GPM.
