1 Prgram fr EQ2310 Digital Cmmunicatins August 20 1 Abut This Curse This is an intrductry curse n aspects f mdern digital cmmunicatin systems. Its main purpse is t serve as a first curse in Digital Cmmunicatins in the basic curricula f the Cmmunicatins System Engineering prgram and the Wireless Systems Engineering prgram at KTH. The curse gives a brad intrductin t the principles f digital cmmunicatins, intrducing the fundamental principles and methds used in current cmmunicatins systems. Prblem- slving and design based n mathe- matical mdelling are integral parts f digital cmmunicatin systems engineering. The emphasis f the curse is therefre n mathematical mdelling in cmmunicatin system design and analysis. The curse is a prerequisite fr the curse EQ2410 Advanced Digital Cmmunicatins. 2 Syllabus Mdulatin techniques Cmplex baseband representatin, spectral descriptin f randm prcesses, linear mdula- tin (ASK, PSK, FSK), digital mdulatin techniques (BPSK, QPSK, QAM), differential mdulatin Demdulatin and signal detectin Gaussian basics, hypthesis testing, vectr representatin f signals and nise, ptimal detec- tin in additive white Gaussian nise (AWGN), receiver structures, perfrmance analysis and errr prbability. Synchrnizatin and nn- cherent cmmunicatin Design requirements, parameter estimatin, nn- cherent cmmunicatin, differential detec- tin, perfrmance analysis. Fundamental limits f perfrmance Intrductin t infrmatin thery, entrpy and mutual infrmatin, channel capacity. Channel cding Blck and cnvlutinal cdes, maximum likelihd decding, cding gain, cded mdulatin. 3 Learning Objectives T successfully pass the curse, yu shuld be able t: Characterize and apply basic techniques in mdern digital cmmunicatins, such as digital mdulatin fr transmissin, ptimal receivers fr detectin, and binary blck cdes and cn- vlutinal cdes fr channel cding; Perfrm simple experiments with a purpse- build hardware platfrm, btain and analyse re- sults relevant fr system perfrmance, and reprt findings in writing; Develp and use simple sftware mdules (e.g., using Matlab) implementing basic techniques in mdern digital cmmunicatins t numerically evaluate and analyse small- scale mdules cmmunicatins systems, and reprt the develpment and results;

2 Describe and demnstrate that the implementatin and develpment f mdern cmmunica- tin technlgy requires mathematical mdelling and prblem slving; Apply mathematical mdelling t basic prblems in digital cmmunicatins systems, and ex- plain hw this is used t analyse and synthesize methds and algrithms within the field. T acquire a higher grade, yu shuld in additin be able t: Cmpare different techniques in mdern digital cmmunicatins, and judge the applicability f different techniques in different situatins; Frmulate and apply advanced mathematical mdels which are applicable and relevant in the case f a given prblem, and when explicit assumptins are missing, evaluate and cmpare dif- ferent pssibilities and make wn relevant assumptins. Besides frm the aims related t yur knwledge and skills in digital cmmunicatins, the curse als aims at imprving yur ability t Learn with and frm ther students; Apprach and slve a cmplex engineering task; Cmmunicate yur results and cnclusins effectively; Review and give feedback n wrk perfrmed by ther students. 4 Prerequisite Yu must have basic knwledge in calculus, linear algebra, and prbability thery. In additin yu must have successfully achieved the learning utcmes required t pass EQ1100 Signal and Systems. As preparatin fr each lecture, yu are required t cmplete a reading assignment. Each lecture will emphasise the mst imprtant parts f the crre- spnding reading assignment, and put new cncepts and techniques int cntext f previusly learned material. Befre sme lectures a 10 minutes quiz may be cnducted based n the material f previus lectures. The quiz will be peer- reviewed, which means that yur quiz will be marked by ne f yur fellw stu- dents. The intentin f the peer- review prcess is t prvide yu with timely feedback f hw well yu have learned previus material. The results f the review prcess will nt be cnsidered twards yur final grade. Tutrials (Perid 1) Tw tutrials will be given each week in perid 1. A prblem set is given in advance fr each tutrial sessin. As preparatin befre a tutrial sessin, yu are asked t prepare yur wn slutin t the

4 particular prblem set in rder t maximise yur learning utcme. During tutrial sessins, a curse instructr will g thrugh the respective prblem set n the bard, asking questins t yu and yur fellw students t get yur input t the slutin. Ticking Sessins (Perid 1) Three ticking sessins will be held during this curse. The class will be divided int three grups (Grup A- C). In a ticking sessin a set f three prblems are handed ut a week befre the sessin. Yu are then expected t attempt t slve these prblems such that yu are able t g t the bard and explain yur slutin apprach. Yu d nt have t get the crrect results; hwever, yu must be able t explain and justify yur apprach t slve the prblem and t lead a discussin with the ther stu- dents as t hw the prblem is t be slved. Yu can wrk tgether with ther students in rder t prepare fr the sessins; hwever, at the bard yu present yur slutin apprach as an individual. Befre a sessin yu tick ff the prblems that yu are willing t explain at the bard. By the end f the three ticking sessins yu will have cllected at mst nine ticks. Based n yur ticks, yu will be credited with bnus pints n the exam and re- exams as fllws: Number f ticks Bnus pints n the exam If it is clear t the instructr that yu have nt prepared fr the sessin, yur ticks fr that sessin will be erased. Nte that in this case yu will nt be able t cllect mre than 6 ticks, which crrespnd t 0.5 bnus pints n the exam. Yu are allwed t use any bnus yu have been awarded n all exams in this curse attempted during the academic year 20/13. Labratry Exercise (Perid 2) The labratry exercise will be held in the Department's curse lab, and yu will be guided by a lab instructr. The exercise is perfrmed in grups f tw students. Yu will need t sign up fr the exer- cise via a web- based registratin service available frm the curse website. The schedule fr the lab sessins will be annunced sn. The deadline fr registratin is Mnday ber 1, 20. In the lab exercise a simple digital cmmunicatins system is investigated. The errr perfrmance is tested using an additive white Gaussian nise channel in the lab. Initially the system is ptimized and tested, and these results are cmpared with thery. Then, the parameters f the matched filter and synchrnizatin are ffset reflecting prbable real wrld imperfectins. Finally the de- tuned perfr- mance is measured. Yu must cme prepared t the lab exercise. That is, yu must have cmpleted the preparatry as- signments prir t attaining the lab exercise. Yu will nt be allwed t participate if yu cme unpre- pared. The lab mem fr the exercise can be dwnladed frm the curse website. Prject Assignment (Perid 2) The prject assignment is a mandatry part f the curse. Yu can cmplete the assignment either by yurself, r in a team f at mst tw students. The prject assignment is a take- hme prject per-

5 frmed with the aid f a cmputer. Yur wrk will be assessed based n a written reprt that yu are required t hand in. Details can be fund in the prject mem. The mem and sme initial matlab cde fr the prject assignment can be dwnladed frm the curse website. The purpse f the exercise, which can be cnsidered being a hybrid between a traditinal labrat- ry experiment and a hmewrk prblem, is t illustrate sme imprtant aspects n analysis and simu- latins, bth baseband and passband, f cmmunicatin systems. As part f the prject exercise, yu will make sme design chices fr yur cmmunicatins system based n a series f specificatins f target perfrmance f the system. Aspects such as bit errr prbability, synchrnizatin, carrier phase estimatin, eye diagram, spectral prperties, and practical imperfectins due t filtering will be stud- ied in a QPSK system perating ver an AWGN channel. The prblems addressed during regular tutri- al sessins will prvide yu with sufficient backgrund t make educated design chices. Preparing prblem slutins in advance fr the tutrial sessins will therefre give yu an advantage when cm- pleting yur prject assignment. The utcme f the exercise, in additin t increasing yur knwledge f cmmunicatin thery, is a shrt written technical reprt were yu discuss yur findings and cmment n varius aspects yu find interesting. N list f questins is prvided, but instead sme general areas t be discussed in the re- prt are prvided. Thus, there are great pprtunities t cncentrate n thse areas that yu cnsider f mst imprtance. If yu have wrked in a team f tw students yu may chse t write ne reprt each r ne cm- mn reprt, with tw authrs. If yu write separate reprts, but have cperated, then state wh yu have wrked with. The reprt shuld be neatly structured, easy t fllw and is nt allwed t exceed six pages (excluding the cver page and the Matlab cde). Unreadable reprts will be failed immedi- ately. Use a wrd- prcessr f yur chice t write the reprt. Hand- written reprts will nt be ap- prved. The language f the reprt can be either Swedish r English. The reprt is cmpleted and handed in by the end f the lab exercise based n the reprt template frmat prvided. Prject Assignment Reprt The deadline fr handing in yur prject assignment reprt is Friday Nvember 23 rd, 20 (hand in at STEX). Reprts handed in t late will nt be crrected. The reprt will be graded pass/fail, based n hw well yu have reached the crrespnding learning bjectives. Yu need t demnstrate yu can develp and use simple sftware mdules, implementing basic techniques used in digital cmmunica- tins systems. Yu further need t demnstrate yu can make relevant and sund chices when faced with an incmpletely defined cmmunicatins systems design prblem, as well as prvide numerical and analytical evidence that yur design meets the system perfrmance targets and specificatins. The result f yur prject wrk is t be reprted in a technical reprt, with any plts and/r tables yu find necessary. A length f fur r five pages shuld suffice, and the reprt is nt t exceed six pages (excluding the cver page and the enclsed Matlab cde). The text shuld be clearly structured and easy t read. A gd structure f the presentatin, adhering t what is cmmn fr technical and sci- entific publicatins, is therefre necessary. A gd text by Ashby [1] prviding guidance fr reprt writing can be dwnladed frm the curse website.

9 Yur results shuld als be pssible t reprduce with reasnable effrt based n yur reprt. When grading the reprt, the technical cntent, as well as presentatin and language qualities, are cnsid- ered. At mst tw authrs are allwed. Either Swedish r English is allwed as the language f chice. All Matlab cde that has been written as part f the assignment must be enclsed as a separate encl- sure (this is nt cnsidered t be part f the max- six- pages main reprt). The template prvided with the prject descriptin will be used t grade the reprt. Use this template as cver page when yu hand in the reprt. Fllwing the cmpletin f the grading prcess, yu can check ut yur reprt at STEX. There will be a secnd deadline fr revising failed reprts. This deadline will be annunced when all reprts have been checked and made available fr ptential revisin. The secnd deadline, as well as any further infrmatin n this tpic, will be psted n the curse hmepage.
