For most of you, the answer is probably no, but four engineers were awarded a 1m prize last week, in recogni<on for their work on the technology that made such <ny cameras a reality. The winners of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering were Eric Fossum and George Smith from the USA, Nobukazu Teranishi from Japan, and the UK s Michael TompseK. They won the prize for coming up with three inven<ons over three decades, which make digital cameras work. And, of course, digital cameras have changed the world as we know it, by changing how we see it. Whether it s the smallest images of our body s cells or pin-sharp images from the surface of Mars, digital cameras have allowed us to share ideas and knowledge like never before. When asked what surprising uses their technology had found, Eric Fossum said: Selfies were something that I didn t really think about, or silly cat videos! I think it doesn t really sink in un<l you see people wandering around taking pictures with smartphones everywhere you go. Then the enormity of it hits you, that almost everybody on the planet is using my technology. It s just totally overwhelming. what s the prize The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is awarded for a groundbreaking innovamon that has been of global benefit to humanity. The chair of the judging panel, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, explains more. We also wanted to find something that was going to be truly inspiring, especially to young people. It s oxen forgoken how crea<ve engineering is. So we wanted to choose a winner that everybody could relate to, and many young people have a mobile phone in their hands with one of these devices in it. Another aim of the prize is to get more girls into engineering. Only 8% of engineering professionals in the UK are female, and the propor<on is even lower for engineering appren<ces. Other countries do much beker, says Professor Dame Ann Dowling, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering. It means that many of our young women are missing out on crea<ve, well-paid jobs. Whether it s designing a planetary vehicle, tes<ng tsunami defences, developing prosthe<c limbs, or making electricity available around the world, young people should have big dreams, and a career in engineering can provide all these and many more opportuni<es. DID YOU KNOW? THE trophy for the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering was designed by a 15-year-old boy called Samuel Bentley from Wales. His design (below) was inspired by Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales.

6 AIM OF THE NEWS COMPREHENSIONS News reports are unique non-fiction texts. Being real, they naturally engage children, and with the range of topics that are covered, help to develop pupils knowledge and understanding of the wider world outside the classroom. The reports are ideal for short, focused comprehension or discussion activities. Along with the opportunity to find fascinating facts and appreciate the opinions of those involved, there is plenty to be inferred and deduced to understand in more depth what is being reported. Like authors, journalists play with language, so news stories are rich nuggets of text to investigate and provide the opportunity for a wide range of reading skills to be practised each week. These skills should fit within most schools reading and literacy programmes. TEACHER ANSWER GUIDE The teacher answers are intended to provide a guide to the reading skill each question is practising. Suggestions are given for a STARTING POINT response that pupils could give. Further suggestions then give a fuller, more DEVELOPED RESPONSE that students will work towards to reach and exceed the floor standards required at the end of primary school. For a list of these reading skills used to reference questions, please schools@firstnews.co.uk. Answers 1) Why have four engineers won the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering? He finds the popularity of his invention quite shocking and hard to take in it s overwhelming. 9) The options below summarise the five paragraphs of the article. READING SKILL: Find and explain information (NC 2a / SATs CD 2b(i & ii) / AF2) President of the Royal Academy of Engineering 8b) What arguments does Professor Dowling make to encourage women to become engineers? READING SKILL: Infer information and justify with evidence (NC 2c & 8 / SATs CD 2d(ii) / AF3) Only 8% of engineers are women. The jobs are really interesting.
8 Developed response: She says that women are missing out on creative, well-paid jobs. She gives examples of interesting engineering jobs to show just how exciting engineering can be and to make it appealing to girls. Designing a planetary vehicle and testing tsunami defences are some of her examples. She explains that only 8% of UK engineers are female. This isn t very obviously encouraging, but it might make girls realise that there aren t enough women engineers and they might be missing out. 10) Do you agree with the judges that digital cameras have been of global benefit to humanity? Explain your reasons. READING SKILL: Develop opinions and provide justifications for viewpoints (NC 6, 7 & 8 ) No not really. Taking pictures isn t that important. Yes, everyone loves taking selfies and photos they are great fun! Developed response: Yes. Digital cameras can be used in so many ways and we all benefit from them. Although some of the uses aren t that important such as taking selfies or silly cat videos it is amazing to be able to get brilliant pictures from another planet, or close up pictures of the human body. No. Although I can see that it can be really useful to take good pictures, I don t think photos are really a benefit to humanity. We could live without them.
