1 In News Focus #42, we head to London. The Bank of England has sparked a fierce debate with its decision to change the image on the British 5 banknote. The bank is going to replace the picture of Elizabeth Fry, a woman prison reformer, with a picture of Winston Churchill, Britain s famous prime minister. This will mean that there will soon be no women on the banknotes. That means no acknowledgement of the achievements of women and no role models for young British girls. Small wonder that so many British people complained! Click here to find out how the Bank is dealing with the controversy. Can You Change This 5 Banknote? July 06, 2013 London, UK There are currently four banknotes in use in the UK: the 5 bill, 10 bill, 20 bill and the 50 bill. Very soon, the Bank of England will replace the image on the 5 bill. At the moment, the banknote carries the image of Elizabeth Fry an eighteenth-century campaigner for the humane treatment of prisoners. The new bill will show the face of Winston Churchill, a well-known and respected prime minister. At first glance, this might not seem like a bad thing. The bank periodically redesigns the bank notes to counter fraud. Elizabeth Fry has been on 5 bills since Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of modern nursing, was on 10 bills from 1975 until she was replaced in But, surprisingly, these are the only two women to appear on British banknotes. Removing Elizabeth Fry will mean there are no women on British bills at all! Wait a moment, I hear you say. Surely the queen s head is on all British banknotes. But this is not the point the figures on the bills are there because of their achievements; their contributions to society. Not because they were born into a royal family. Taken aback by a huge outcry around the UK, critical newspaper reports and an online petition signed by 35,000 people, the Bank of England has addressed the situation. Popular novelist Jane Austen is now set to appear on the new 10 note. From 2016, Austen will replace Charles Darwin. That s all very well, but this would seem the absolute minimum the Bank should do. Surely women on at least two of the banknotes would be a better way to acknowledge the contributions of approximately half of the population. That would be a positive signal from the Bank and would help women achieve equality in society. It would also help the UK to catch up with Australia, which currently has six women on its banknotes. So the question is which woman should appear on a British banknote. Plenty of worthy female candidates are available, for example, Beatrice Webb, an economist and co-founder of the LSE (the prestigious London School of Economics). Here are some other possible candidates: Mary Seacole, who created a hospital to aid wounded soldiers during the Crimean war; biophysicist Rosalind Franklin, who contributed to the discovery of DNA; Emmeline Pankhurst and Mary Wollstonecraft, who campaigned for women s right to vote; Octavia Hill, who founded the National Trust (an organization protecting historical and cultural buildings and land); or novelist George Eliot, author of Mill on the Floss, etc.
2 As Britain moves towards a more equal society, the country must give credit to women for their part in history. It is important for young women (and men) to realize that gender is not a barrier to achievement, despite what the history books may show. Female role models on banknotes may seem like a little thing, but it gives young people the message that women do achieve great things and that their achievements will be recognized. [Elizabeth Fry ( ) campaigned to improve the crowded, unhygienic conditions in prisons.] [A] READING CHECK Are these sentences correct (C) or incorrect (I)? 1. The largest banknote in the UK is the 50 bill. 2. On one side of the current 5 bill is an image of Ms. Fry. 3. Ms. Fry was the first woman (other than the queen) to appear on a banknote in the UK. 4. A lot of British people signed an online petition to protest against the lack of women on banknotes. 5. The Bank regularly changes the images on banknotes to prevent criminals copying them. 6. The queen s image can be found on one British banknote. 7. As a result of complaints, the Bank will replace the image of Isaac Newton with a picture of a woman novelist. 8. Images of women on banknotes can help to build a more equal society. [B] SUMMARY Complete the summary using the words in the box below. achievements bill figures gender organization petition prestigious queen recent role models A lot of British people are angry with Bank of England. 35,000 people have signed an online [ ] [1] to protest against its decision to replace the image of Elizabeth Fry on the 5-pound [ ] [2] with an image of Winston Churchill. The Bank s [ ] [5] decision will mean that there are no banknotes with female images. If you compare the UK with Australia, which has six women on its banknotes, I think you will agree that the Bank s action is both shocking and unacceptable. There have been many great [ ] [6] by British women. For example, Beatrice Webb who founded the [ ] [7] London School of Economics. Female [ ] [10] on banknotes may not seem important, but these images send young people the message that women have an equal place in society and that their achievements will be recognized. [C] For & Against Match each speech bubble on the left with a speech bubble on the right. We need another woman on a British banknote. So, the question is which woman should it be? I d like to suggest Mary Seacole. She was a nurse who set up a hospital to look after soldiers during a war in 1854 to But that s exactly the point. If we put her image on a banknote, then everyone will learn about her fantastic achievements. It seems fair that the Bank of England should have women figures on two bank notes and male figures on two bank notes. I think that s an excellent suggestion. She was recently voted the Greatest Black Briton because of her work looking after wounded soldiers. We live in a country where women are supposed to be equal to men, but there have only been two women on British banknotes! In contrast, Australia has six women on its banknotes. I don't think it is a question of fairness. The Bank should choose famous figures because of their contribution to the country. Not because of their sex or color. Who exactly is Octavia Hill? Why put someone on a banknote if we don t know who she is! Absolutely! We need to give young women strong role models that they can look up to.
