Even though we had some wake up call s, I have had a good response from most. Many photos were received for the Showcase section making it a hard choice, but if you are not featured in one issue you will be in the next one. I keep all the input stored for future use. The criteria of fairness prevails. That said, I try to present members who never appeared before or recently, to bring in some new works and points of view. Thanks to all who have given feedback, also. I would like to emphasize that your participation in any phase is very important. Recently, I felt the need about the features and size of the DD to be decided by the Board or a group of people. It was decided to form a Newsletter committee to study and discuss the CPS newsletter. So, changes might be on the way. Enjoy your reading. Isabel Bel Martins CPS UPCOMING EVENTS
According to the plan of having more use of the clubroom, a new series of night activities has started. PHOTOSHOP NIGHT AT CPS January 25th, 7:30pm "Curves". CPS member, Varina Chapman, will discuss Curves. This will be a simple, non-technical, but very useful explanation of this powerful adjustment. Bring some digital images to share after the presentation. Organized by Jim Kunkel. "MOVIE NIGHT AT CPS" A new series of photography related movies has begun for CPS members. All this is made possible by our digital projector and the gigantic 9 ft. screen. All this and popcorn too! Bring a guest! January 30th, 7:30pm Born Into Brothels Academy Award Documentary Feature. An award-winning photographer, Zana Briski befriended the children of Calcutta's red light district, starting a photography workshop for them and equipping them each with their own camera. The transformative power of this simple object is remarkable; within weeks, the children show new spirit and several have discovered a talent for the art. Zana records the children as they filter their marginalized, forgotten world through the camera lens. Over the course of the film, a central narrative unfolds--the children's quest, fueled by their newfound hope and strength, to leave the brothels for a better life. Organized by Joe Polevoi. OPEN CRITIQUE OR LOSERS NIGHT January 18 th, 7:30pm. If you entered your beloved photo and the judges did not "place" it, and you want to learn what might make it a better image! Bring any image entered in any of this year's competitions. We will be our own "judges" and "critics" and explore options and opinions to continue on the path to those 27's!!! Come for a lively evening. Organized by Diane Funk. CPS NEWS PAST EVENTS CPS Holiday Workshop Open House Joe Polevoi gets two volunteers, Barbara Pennington and new member, Marcia Polevoi, to demonstrate how whipped cream can pizzazz up party candids! Max Aynik took the sequence of photos.
Holiday Workshop Overview By Barbara Pennington - Photos Cheri Homaee Thanks to girls AND guys for contributing goodies galore: cookies, brownies, cakes, muffins, cheeses, dips, crackers, and assorted appetizers. Marcia Polevoi nurtured the table both days. Our eight-foot refreshment table was a colorful feast for all to gaze and graze. Our kitchen is stocked with leftovers for the rest of the month. Joe's live example of putting "the wow" in holidays photos brought smiles and laughs from the audience. (See these photos elsewhere.) On December 2nd and 3rd, CPS hosted a Holiday Open House. As you walked in the door, the walls were lined with a beautiful collection of winter and holiday photographs boasting the talents of our club members. The presentations and handouts by Ron Wilson, Jim Kunkle, Joe Polevoi and Rob Erick were concise, informational and well received by our guests. They, along with Max Aynik, helped guests with individual photography The Board, along with members, assisted with the set up and clean up. All in all, the event was a great success, thanks to the teamwork and commitment of this club. That's what CPS is all about. problems and questions. Christine Lang captured every person with her energetic talk about the school and club membership. She did such a great job she captured three new memberships on Saturday with promises of more. New members that joined during the open house were John Poti, Jack Hurray, Jack Ulman, Bill & Sue Berger. Welcome to all new members.
Holiday Lighting Night Field Trip December 29 Sparkling Holiday Light By Diane Funk What a fun night! On December 29th, approximately twelve to fifteen CPS members enjoyed Holiday Light displays. Most met at the club to start the evening, and carpooled to the Holiday Lights displays. Some had their first experience of composing and recording night lighting. The evening was certainly cool but most tolerable for winter. Perhaps a light dusting of snow would have added a theatrical touch but that can wait for another year. This was a great evening; so, when is the next field trip and where would you like to go? GE s Nela Park on Noble Road was the first stop. What a beautiful display! To see the display should be on everyone s must-do list. Then it was on to Public Square. Cleveland is a beautiful city, and it was sparkling this night. We all wove back and forth across the Square, relating the lights and the buildings and the people. The moving white horses and white carriage was a challenge, wasn t it? When was the last time you walked about the Square? The evening ended with hot wassail, cookies and good fellowship at the club. We viewed several of the unedited photo efforts and now look forward to some images in competitions up coming.. December Field Trip By Diane Ward Rob Erick organized the final CPS field trip of Thirteen members drummed out the old year while focusing their lenses on the Christmas displays at Nela Park in East Cleveland and Cleveland Public Square. One of the warmest December nights in memory made travel easy and allowed for leisure picture taking.. Waissail and cookies were served at the club afterward. Courtesy of Diane Funk.
The Field Trip by a New Member By Jack Hurray The field trip to Nela Park and Public Square was attended by about 10 or 12 members. The weather was perfect; the Christmas lights at both locations were beautiful. Being a new member of CPS, I didn't know what to expect. I found this a great opportunity to shoot the same scenes as the other members. Comparing their shots with mine under these conditions would be a great way to learn. After Nela and Public Square, we were all ready for the goodies at the clubhouse. We tried to slide show some shots directly off the CF cards. The computer was not very cooperative; the darker images were not easy to see. Perhaps a dozen shots cropped, adjusted, etc. placed on a CD, would be a good way to share the photos on the projector later this month. Many thanks to all that organized the field trip and provided the goodies. MEMBER PROFILE: INTRODUCING ROB ERICK By Marcia Polevoi Rob - photographed by Diane Funk ROB ERICK, current Webmaster of the CPS website, has been a member of the club since June He joined after taking both the Digital and Fundamentals classes. Rob had done some photography in the 80s, but new didn t do much until he received a digital camera two years ago. He played around with digital editing and Photoshop, but soon realized that he needed more help. When he learned about the CPS Club near him, he signed up for the Digital class. It was so helpful, Rob decided to take the Fundamentals class as a refresher. Rob found, too, that CPS was a warm and friendly group of photographers. I literally felt welcome from the first meeting I attended. I never once felt alone and I appreciated that. Rob says he is happy with the club s vitality and the direction the club is headed. He especially likes the expanded use of the new clubroom for additional photography related events. He jumped right into the activities, becoming a Board member and an instructor in both the Digital Imaging and Fundaments courses. Rob also volunteered to advise
and help with the purchase of the club s first desktop Computer system. On a personal level, he keeps learning more about digital photography and entering competitions. He sees improvement in his work, even if the judges don t. gro. He s 52, married to Linda for 27 years and lives in Brecksville. I have been thrilled to death with the friendliness and the quality of the people I have met, is Rob s testimonial to the Cleveland Photographic Society. Rob previously worked for Glidden Paint Co. and other places in management positions. He is currently not working still figuring out what I want to do when I grow up. 12 Member s Travel Architecture and Nature in Moscow By Tatyana Denisova morning it never means that it will be for the whole day, and in turn, if it s rainy. In Moscow, if it s rainy in the morning you can always be sure it will be the same in the evening, and in the next morning too. My trip to Moscow in October didn t have sightseeing and photographing as the main goals. I visited my home, met relatives and friends, managed some personal business. But my camera was with me, and I tried to use it as much as possible. That was not easy. I hoped to get an Indian summer, very usual in October, but failed. During three weeks I was there only a couple of days happened to be sunny and bright, during the rest of the time it was rainy, windy, cold and grey. Probably good for b/w filming, but I doubt even this. I mean if you go to Moscow I wish you would, because both Moscow and Russia at all deserve it you should think carefully about the weather. Actually all seasons are good depending from the subjects of shooting. In winter it can be very cold, but if it s sunny, the snow on the trees, grass and buildings is iridescent, and this is beautiful. Spring, photographing old churches and estates, street scenes and monuments, because the air is transparent, there is already a little of verdure and flowers for decoration, but trees, bush, grass and flowers still don t hide buildings from you, how it would be in summer and autumn. Moscow is a very green city, and I always tried to make pictures for my historical works in winter or spring: in the other time I could hardly see my subjects behind the vegetation. But everything is changing in our changing world. Now, in December, while I am writing this, the weather in Moscow is very warm, the grass is green and the flowers are blooming.
