1 THROUGH THE DARKROOM DOOR May 2005 Cleveland Photographic Society Variations of a Gehry Building by Joe Polevoi In This Issue: Kolman Rosenberg s Community Project Mary Rynes Demonstrates the Usefulness of Critiques Joe Polevoi on The Keyword: Potential Competition Results, Final Year-End Standings and Photos Annual Banquet Planned for May 21st

2 CPS Community Project Proposed Kolman Rosenberg During the 1930s and 1940s the Photo League was a self supporting camera club, photo school, and gallery in New York City (much like CPS). Its membership included such notable photographers as Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams and Richard Avedon. The Photo League felt that it had a public purpose, that being to document the many aspects of life in New York City. It held many public photographic exhibitions, some of which were later published as books. Unfortunately, during the paranoid post-war political climate, the work of the Photo League was taken to be a preoccupation with the seamy side of life focusing on discovered moments that were outside of the idealized imagery of advertised America. In 1947 the US Attorney General alleged that the group was a communist and subversive organization and in 1951 the group disbanded. (source American Photography by Miles Orvell, Oxford University Press, 2003) I feel that, like the Photo League, the Cleveland Photographic Society (CPS) should serve some public purpose. With its long and historic presence in the city of Cleveland, CPS could and should emerge as the preeminent organization representing the art of photography in Northeast Ohio. I would like to put together and lead a group of CPS members to work on defining a public purpose for CPS, and moving ahead to begin to carry out that purpose. I would envision a resultant exhibition of CPS member photographs representing life in Northeast Ohio in all of its multi-faceted aspects. The group s work would entail initial brainstorming sessions to further define the purpose and scope of this initiative. The work might then continue to possibly include soliciting support from the city, region, foundations, museums, educational institutions etc., arranging exhibitions, or even publishing. The possibilities are many. I feel that a project such as this would help to rejuvenate the club, would elevate photography as a serious art form in Northeast Ohio, and would give all members of CPS a public purpose for which we would all be proud. If you are interested in working on this project, please give me a call at Once I have names of interested members, we will set up an initial meeting to begin defining our public purpose and then carrying out the project. 3 Judges Critique Often Helpful Mary Rynes Demonstrates with Before and After Photos At a recent competition, Mary Rynes listened to the judges advice regarding changes that could be made to improve her photos. Below are two such examples. In the first example, the lily was placed high in the frame without much space around it. The judges commented that it could use more space around the flower on the top as well as the sides. Mary made this change and was pleased with the resulting image. In the second example, The lily was originally facing left. For most people, it is more pleasing to see the flower pointing right. This phenomenon may have something to do with the way our brains work. In any case, judges pointed this out and Mary made the change in Photoshop. The result can be seen below. 4 The Keyword: Potential Joe Polevoi I m excited about our decision to move out of this tiredlooking club room, the tired-looking stairway, the tired-looking entrance, in a tired-looking part of downtown Cleveland. We hope to enhance Broadview Heights with the addition of our 118 year old photography society. We may be historical in years, but soon to be revitalized by a fresh new club room on a campus area in a suburban setting. It may be jumping the gun, since nothing is finalized yet, but I would like to share some ideas that might help CPS be even more effective in the future. Whether or not we settle down in Broadview Hts. or elsewhere, most of these ideas could be implemented. What I d like to see The new location becoming a familiar site for all the surrounding suburbs as well as Cleveland. It will be a place we would be pleased to invite guests. 2. More fundamental and digital classes offered to help pay for the increased cost of having a newer place for our exclusive use. 3. A rotating exhibit of photos showcasing the talents of our membership, illustrating what photography is all about. Visitors would see the variety of creative photography we are constantly producing. 4. Start out with an Open House to welcome Broadview Hts. residents and others interested in photography. This would be a good way to present information about our programs, field trips and other learning opportunities. 5. Establish procedures for sending publicity to all area publications and other locations on a regular basis. 6. Dedicate wall space to continually post news of interest for our members, news of other competitions, etc. 7. Have an annual CPS exhibition of member photos open to the public. Excellent PR opportunities. 8. Informal sessions to view DVD s, videotapes, and INSIDE CPS discussions of photographic interest. This would be another great use for our digital projector. 9. More emphasis on maintaining our web site as a source for-upto-date info on events, competition scores, members photo galleries, etc. The internet site could be one of our strongest tools to attract new members. 10. Share some programs with other photo groups. Good way to meet other local photographers. 11. Possible workshops or seminars as a revenue source. I m sure there are many more ways for CPS to have a great impact wherever it ends up. This move holds a lot of potential for the future if we all pitch in to make it more successful than ever. 8 CPS Year-End Competition Guidelines Editor s Note: So that members may better understand the yearend awards, the current guidelines for the year-end competition are reprinted here. The deadline for the year-end competition was April 29th. Winners will be announced at the Annual Banquet on May 21st. CLEVELAND PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY ANNUAL AWARDS Revised 3/23/1997 The annual awards are traditionally presented at the Society s end of the year banquet. They are of four types: 1. Accumulated Points. 2. Year End Competition. 3. Memorial Awards. 4. Special Awards as announced by Chairpersons during the year. ACCUMULATED POINTS The individuals with the highest point totals in each class and category, of each division, accumulated during the year s regular competitions, earn these awards. Places are designated as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd based on point total. Ties are not broken and therefore more than one award may be given for any of these places. If the total of participants in any class is less than 11 the number of places shall be reduced as: 6 to 10 participants 2 places 1 to 5 participants 1 place YEAR END COMPETITION This competition enables the membership to enter what they feel is their best work of the year for overall judging. Each Division Chairperson will announce in April the number of entries allowed for submittal. Entries must be work that was entered in regular competition during the past year. They need not have been winners or have placed. Judging shall be done in closed session by other than Society members. Judges eligible for a division may not have judged any regular competition during the year for that division. They may have judged for another division. The competition is to be held in a location and with equipment that would be considered in line with what CPS provides at regular competitions so that a fair presentation of the members work is accomplished. (ie: adequate lighting for viewing prints; a large screen,a bright projector, and a dark room for slides). Ties are broken. Places are designated as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd based on point total and tie breaking votes. If the total of participants in any class is less than 11 the number of places shall be reduced as: 6 to 10 participants 2 places 1 to 5 participants 1 place Only one place is to be awarded per person per category in a division. However, one person can win a Memorial type award and also win a place in a category. For example, if the judging would indicate a person should win Slide of the Year and 1st place/class A in Pictorial Slides, this person would not receive the 1st place award. If however, the former 1st place photograph was a scenic, and it was this division s year to select a recipient for the John Moddejonge award, it would be eligible for this award. Print/Slide of the Year winners in each division, having received the highest judging scores, are considered to be the most prestigious and will be displayed in the Society s clubroomfor the coming year. 8

9 Slide makers in this group are responsible for providing a print, matted and framed not to exceed 16 x 20 inches by the end of June. Print makers shall have their entry framed within the same time. All slides which won an award are to be collected and duplicated at the Society s expense, then kept by the Secretary in the Best of Year collection. MEMORIAL AWARDS These awards are determined in the year end competitions. Winners of these awards are considered to be more prestigious than other places, except Print/Slide of the Year, and will be displayed in the Society s club room for the coming year. Slide makers in this group are responsible for providing a print, matted and framed not to exceed 16 x 20 by the end of June. Print makers shall have their entry framed within the same time. All slides which won an award are to be collected and duplicated at the Society s expense, then kept by the Secretary in the Best of Year collection. They are: William Meyer The best Black and white scenic print. This is usually awarded in the Pictorial Print division, but if no prints are considered eligible, the Nature Print Division may place the award. (Maker made prints only.) John Moddejonge The best Color Scenic. This alternates between the Pictorial Slide and Pictorial Print divisions, but can be awarded by either division or by a Nature division if no eligible pictures are entered in the division designated for a give year. (Maker made prints only.) Note: A Scenic is defined as: Constituting or affording pleasing views of natural features. A depiction of natural scenery that could be described as picturesque. The hand of man or views of people are acceptable but should not be a primary or dominant element of the photograph. CPS Photographers Win Awards at Ohio Competitions Congratulations go out to Ron Wilson and Mandi Fleming. Ron won the Best of Show award at this year s Jewish Community Center Photography Competition with his photo Movement in Red. CPS members may recall seeing this photo on the back wall of our clubroom. The JCC show was at the Mandel JCC in Beachwood and will now be on display at the Beck Center in Lakewood through June 11th. Mandi won the Luciano award for architecture at the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) 2005 Six State Photography Show. Her winning photo is titled Final Reflections. This show will be at the FAVA Center in Oberlin through June 4th. Henry Mayer The best nature slide from the General category (class A & B combined) is judged with the best slide from the Zoology category. The winner becomes the Slide of the Year while the other wins this award. Ron Wilson s photo Movement in Red won the Best of Show award at this year s JCC competition. 9
