Copernicus, previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security), is the European Programme for the establishment of a European capacity for Earth Observation. The Copernicus programme is coordinated and managed by the European Commission. The development of the observation infrastructure is performed under the aegis of the European Space Agency for the space component and of the European Environment Agency and the Member States for the in situ component.

Copernicus: Sentinel-1 Orbit: Sun-synchronous near-polar orbit, repeat cycle of 12 days, cycle length of 175 days Stripmap mode (SM): 80 km swath, 5 m x 5 m resolution, single-look Interferometric Wide Swath mode (IWS): 240 km swath, 5 m x 20 m resolution, single-look Extra Wide Swath mode (EWS): 400 km swath, single-look Interferometric Wide Swath mode (IWS): 240 km swath, 25 m x 80 m resolution, 3-looks Wave mode (WM): 20 km x 20 km, 20 m x 5 m resolution, single-look Near real-time delivery of data within 3 hours (worst case) with 1 hour as goal Data delivery from archive within 24 hours
Copernicus: Sentinel-1 Monitoring sea ice zones and the arctic environment Surveillance of marine environment Monitoring land surface motion risks Mapping of land surfaces: forest, water and soil, agriculture Mapping in support of humanitarian aid in crisis situations.
Copernicus: Sentinel-2 Fast Track Service (Land Monitoring Core Services) Geographic coverage Geometrical revisit Spectral sampling Service continuity Spatial resolution Acquisition strategy Fast Track Service (Emergency Response Core Service) Spatial resolution down to 5 m Accessibility/timeliness down to 6 hrs offline & 24hrs in NRT Compliance of the Sentinel-2 system All land areas/islands covered (except Antarctica) 5 days revisit cloud free fully in line with vegetation changes Unique set of measurement/calibration bands Sentinel-2A launch in 2014: the mission complements the SPOT and Landsat missions. < 1 ha MMU (Minimum Mapping Unit) fully achievable with 10 m Systematic push-broom acquisitions, plus lateral mode capability for emergency events monitoring Compliance of the Sentinel-2 system Reference/damage assessment maps limited to the 10m SSD (Spatial Sampling Distance) Fully compliant (retrieval of already archived reference data in < 6 hrs, and delivery of data after request in NRT in 3 hrs for L1c)

Sentinel-1 is a polar-orbiting, all-weather, day-and-night radar imaging mission for land and ocean services. The first Sentinel-1 satellite will be launched on a Soyuz rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on 3 April FUTURE: Sentinel-2 is a polar-orbiting, multispectral high-resolution imaging mission for land monitoring to provide, for example, imagery of vegetation, soil and water cover, inland waterways and coastal areas. Sentinel-2 will also deliver information for emergency services. Sentinel-3 is a multi-instrument mission to measure sea-surface topography, sea- and land-surface temperature, ocean colour and land colour with high-end accuracy and reliability. The mission will support ocean forecasting systems, as well as environmental and climate monitoring. Sentinel-4 is a payload devoted to atmospheric monitoring that will be embarked upon a Meteosat Third Generation-Sounder (MTG-S) satellite in geostationary orbit. Sentinel-5 is a payload that will monitor the atmosphere from polar orbit aboard a MetOp Second Generation satellite. Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite mission is being developed to reduce data gaps between Envisat, in particular the Sciamachy instrument, and the launch of Sentinel-5. This mission will be dedicated to atmospheric monitoring.

Scanning a farm with a satellite costs about one third as much as sending an inspector on a field visit ($180; 150 euros) rather than 310 ($490; 400 euros), says the UK's Rural Payments Agency (RPA), which is responsible for disbursing the subsidies in the UK and checking for irregularities.
