The F /Stop Two Rivers Photography Club - Newsletter Founded: June 2010 website: No. 29 December 2016 A Message from Barry Biddle, TRPC President I hope our pre- Thanksgiving snow has given many of you the impetus to go out and make beautiful photographs. Hopefully you are remembering the zone techniques that Tim Cooper taught us last spring so we avoid all of that grey looking snow in our pictures. The meters don t lie, they just always look for neutral grey. This fall we had another successful class with 8-10 students participating. The peer-to-peer program is also off to a good start. The first session was one of the best attended since the program was started. The biggest news from the fall was the launch of our new competition format. Each meeting, except for closed boards, is a single format competition, either print or projected. This allows for both Salon and Gallerie members to compete on the same night and experience each others work and the feedback from our outside judges. Although we may be approaching the end of the calendar year we are barely halfway through TRPC s program year. Next up on our schedule is our Christmas/Holiday meeting on December 9th. This will include a projected competition for both Salon and Gallerie members. Don t forget that everyone is encouraged to bring something for the refreshment table, maybe a holiday favorite or something special you would like to share. It is also a good time to mingle and get to know some of the club members that are less familiar to you. Other things to look forward to are the black-and-white competition in January, which is also the night we hold our garage sale. Members can bring photography related items that they would like to sell. So come ready to shop. Once again we will be holding Winter Classes on Saturday mornings in January and February. Specific dates and topics are included in the Winter Class article in this newsletter. And of course our major spring event is our annual Teach-In. This year s event will be on March 11th and our speaker will be Carl Heilman. Stay tuned for more details! We look forward to seeing you at all of these wonderful activities! PAGE 1

Mentors Available Our club exists to promote photography as a hobby, an art form, and a source of enjoyment. Education is an important aspect of achieving those goals. In addition to the competitions with their useful critiques and the classes in the Fall and Winter, mentors can be provided to new members, particularly those ones who are relatively inexperienced. Details can be obtained from board members. ANNOUNCEMENT The F/Stop The F/Stop is the official newsletter for the Two Rivers Photography Club of Binghamton, NY. It is published three times a year (Sept/Dec/Apr) and can be read online at the club s web site at: Articles, photos and announcements are welcome and can be submitted to the editor prior to the publication dates as follows: April 1, 2017 September 1, 2017 December 1, 2017 All submissions are subject to the f/stop editor, TRPC Officers and Board of Directors approval. President Barry Biddle, in the most recent newsletter, asked for volunteers to take over editing and production of this publication. Consequently, Don Costello is now doing the writing, and Jody Adams is doing the layout and production. Editor: Don Costello ShDCos@aol.com Contributing writers: Bill Baburchak, Kathy Whisman Pete Kofira Jr. If any members have items they wish to have published (e.g., awards, work being exhibited, details about upcoming contests, trips, adventures, etc.) please contact Don at shdcos@aol.com or at PAGE 2

TEACH IN WORKSHOP SATURDAY, March 11th 2017 KELBY WALK 2016 Chenango Valley State Park Introducing our Speaker, Carl Heilman Carl brings almost 40 years of photo experience and enthusiasm for many different aspects of photography to each workshop and tour. He has been working digitally with Photoshop since 1997 and a digital SLR since early and thoroughly enjoys the additional freedom afforded by digital photography. He has led photo workshops since the early 1990 s and has been presenting photography workshops in Brant Lake since 1997 through Wild Visions, Inc. He has also done workshops for the The Wild Center, the Adirondack Photography Institute, NANPA, the Adirondack Mountain Club, Adirondack Life, the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, the Lake George Association, View in Old Forge, Adorama and the Lower Adirondack Region Arts Council. His coffee table books on the Adirondacks, Lake George, New York State, and Maine have been published by Rizzoli, Voyageur Press, and North Country Books. His photography has been used by publications and businesses around the world. His AV programs have aired on regional PBS stations, and he was interviewed for the May 2008 national PBS special, The Adirondacks. - On Saturday, October 1, photographers gathered in cities across the globe to capture a slice of life through their eyes during the Annual World-wide Kelby PhotoWalk. It s the world s largest global social photography event in the history of photography itself and requires registering. Participant images can be entered into competitions, with money awards. In Binghamton, there were two such walks, one of them coordinated and led by Bill Baburchak. Participating with Bill were: Jennifer Lasher, Pete Kofira Jr, Mary Shapinas, Tim Hill, Lindsey Leiser, Don Costello, Kathi Hunt, Susan Thorne, Jean Stout, Kathy Whisman, Karen Doolittle, Ella Lane, Lori Sciamanna, and Mary Baburchak. We met at Chenango Valley State Park s Tween Lakes picnic area to, obviously, do some nature photography. It was a cool, overcast morning, but there was lots of color and a fair amount of waterfowl. Some of us captured images of salamanders and fungi along with autumn foliage, the pond, and birds. Workshop Details will announced by and during meetings. Stay Tuned! PAGE 3

Endicott s Apple Fest and Exhibition at Frame to Please Once again, Pete Kofira arranged for our club s exhibition of photos at Amy Burgess frame shop, Frame to Please, in coordination with Endicott s Apple Fest in early September. Eleven club members had a total of 38 images in the window at Frame to Please for much of September. The participants were Walt Adams, Bill Bay, Barry Biddle, Don Costello, Peter Kofira Jr., Grant LaBarr, Jen Lasher, Deb Rockefeller, Cindy Ruggieri, Mary Lou Shapinas, and Kathy Wishman. On the day of the Fest, many attendees viewed and commented on the fine works shown. Our participation in this event helps Amy attract people to her frame shop while also publicizing the club. In addition, we had a display table for the entire day of the very successful Apple Fest (which has morphed into a large craft show). This was the first year the club rented a space on the street in front of Amy s shop rather than just being on the sidewalk. It proved to be very beneficial, and we had much more traffic than in past years. Many folks stopped by to chat and ask for information or to look at items on display. We had people sign up for our six week Photo Class, and had a nice couple who eventually came to our first meeting and joined the club. Assisting with the booth set-up, passing out flyers, and conversing with Fest attendees were (in addition to Pete): Don Costello, Jean Stout, Bill Baburchak, Barry Biddle, Grant LaBarr, Kathy Whisman, Cindy Ruggieri, and Sam Wentz. All in all, a very good result for our efforts to promote the club. Submitted by Pete Kofira Winter at the Zoo Photo Contest Rosamond Gifford Zoo One Conservation Place, Syracuse, NY Monday, January 2-Tuesday, January a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Complimentary admission with camera (cell phones not accepted) Once again, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is hosting a Photo Contest. This was a fun activity out club participated in last year. We will plan a group trip, with the date to be announced soon, but feel free to go when it suits your schedule. Valid entries are photgraphed during the month of January. Submission rules will be found on the Zoo Website. PAGE 4

TRPC Bus Trip To PhotoPlus Expo October 2016 Javits Center, New York, NY the Adobe exhibit made for an easy and comfortable venue to gather info on new products. It was another great trip for the 16 club members who decided to go this year, but unfortunately each year fewer members are participating. A few years ago we combined the trip with Linda Herrick Tours and shared a bus securing 20 tickets. Since than we ve not been able to sell all 20 tickets, and unless we get an overwhelming response previous to buying the tickets for 2017, the club will not be having an organized trip to the Expo. Let s hope this doesn t happen. For the 16 members that did go this year, WOW what a time. All the major vendors were there, and if you wanted to test drive a new camera or lenses they were available by the hundreds. The on-floor camera and software seminars and especially the large seating area at After spending some time in the Expo all most of the group took off on the customary NYC adventure. While some met family and friends or did shopping and sightseeing, our group went to the latest attraction next to One World Trade Center, a futuristic building called The Oculus. The initial impact of this massive structure as you exit the subway is breathtaking. Inside is just as spectacular with its gigantic arches and pure white floors, walls and ceiling. The building is filled with shops and restaurants, and the lower level is a newest major rail hub for the downtown area. We all met again at Bryant Park for the bus trip home and exchanged stories about the Expo and our other adventures of the day. It will be disappointing if we can t get enough interest in this trip for next year. This has always been a great time to keep up on the latest gear and share some time with fellow members. See you all next year? Submitted By: Pete Kofira Jr PAGE 5
