1 DENVER PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY NOVEMBER Dee Beneda, Editor Website: MEETING PLACE - Applewood Valley U.M.C., 2035 Ellis Street, Golden, CO NOVEMBER EVENTS Thursday, Nov 6th - 7:00 p.m.- Program: Photojournalism - Presenter: KENN BISIO Kenn is an associate professor of Journalism & Technical Communication at Metropolitan State University of Denver where he teaches Photojournalism and Social Documentary. He is also a world-renowned photojournalist with more than 40 years as a working pro. His images have been published worldwide in the most popular and prestigious newspapers and magazines for which he has received numerous awards. His photographs have been displayed in exhibits in America, Europe, Russia and the Far East and are purchased by individual, corporate, museum and gallery collectors. Bisio s photographs are also in the NFL Hall of Fame for his coverage of four Super Bowls. His fine art photography is represented by The Geraint Smith Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. Thursday, Nov 13th - 7:00 p.m.- Business (Voting) & Competition - Subject: Open Digital Images (Due by Friday, 11/7), Slides (Titles called in to Dee by Tuesday) and Prints (Due by 6:30-7:00 p.m.) - Judge: RUSS BURDEN - Russ has an incredible passion for photography. His drive to seek out the optimal light and composition motivates him to find the perfect image. When Russ stands before a scene, his goal is to find serenity amongst chaos and confusion and chisel out what s unnecessary to make the photograph simple and to the point. For Russ, deciding what to exclude is equally as important as knowing what to include. Russ can often be heard saying, It s all about the light. Finding drama in the ordinary is key to getting an image with impact. (See more about Russ's accomplishments on page 3). Saturday, November 22-1:00 p.m. - Special - Judging of Year-End Competition Entries As usual, we will have 3 outside judges for our 2014 year-end competition. This year the judges are: ROY REED, SUZANNE SNIDER, & JOE BONITA. UPCOMING IN DECEMBER DPS Year-End Banquet & Awards Ceremony Thursday, December 11th - 6:30 p.m. Applewood Valley UMC- FELLOWSHIP HALL (Downstairs) Club furnishes Drinks--Tableware--Meat dishes Bring a covered dish to share--vegetable, Casserole--Dessert, etc. We will be viewing all year end entries and passing out awards Bring your friends and family to share some great food and view our best images!!

3 MORE ON RUSS BURDEN RUSS BURDEN is an internationally published photographer. His commercial work is sold through Photo Library and often shows up in magazines and advertisements around the world. His wildlife and scenic images have appeared on calendars published by Self Realization Fellowship, Kodak, Audubon, Sierra Club, National Wildlife, National Geographic Traveler, and numerous other companies. Additionally, his nature images have hung in the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Russ Burden Nature Photography Tours Russ leads nature photo tours to various scenic locations around the US. Sites include the Oregon Coast, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Monument Valley, the Slot Canyons of Arizona, Vermont in Autumn, Bryce and Zion National Parks, White Sands and Bosque Del Apache in New Mexico, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, and Capital Reef National Park. Nature s Best Russ is a multiple time winner of the highly coveted Nature s Best Windland Smith Rice Award in the Art In Nature category, Landscape, Environmental Issues, Creative Digital, in addition to the Backyard Habitat category. Outdoor Photographer Russ writes a How To column for the highly prestigious Outdoor Photographer website. Topics include all aspects of outdoor photography from lighting to composition to the technical aspects of how to capture a great image. Panasonic Digital Photo Academy Russ Teaches all classes sponsored by the highly recognized Panasonic Digital Photo Academy. Classes are offered at all skill levels in and around the United States, and Russ authored all five national curriculums used by the Panasonic Digital Photo Academy. They include Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Photoshop, Understanding Composition and Technique. Classes are taught in 30+ cities around the US. Freelance Writer Russ has been published numerous times in Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, and Petersen s PHOTOgraphic. Take Great Pictures Russ writes a weekly Photo Tip column for Take Great Pictures.com. Topics include How To s on everything from people to nature and architecture to studio work, and also writes a monthly Photoshop Tip column for Take Great Pictures.com. Topics include How To s on many aspects of digital manipulation to bring out the best in a photo. Book Credits Russ Burden has two books to his credit. He is the exclusive photographer in the Amphoto Complete Book of Photography: Improving Your Pictures With A Digital Camera. HIs work is also featured in The Best of Nature, a book highlighting the world's foremost nature photographers. Furthermore, he has numerous other book credits to his name. 5 CLUB NOTES ) Another Fall Swap Meet come and gone. More tables sold, less people through the door, but each club still cleared $ 1, Thanks to everyone who helped in any area!! 2) Kids with Cameras went well. Nine members helped with the nine students enrolled and we will meet with them again on Friday, November 7th, after processing, to pick their favorites and the club member's choice, all to be arranged on the Board for viewing at the school, at Walgreens and at our year end. 3) Voting for Club Officers/Board Members will be held at this month's Business Meeting on Thursday, November 13th. The slate of Officers is the same as existing as no new names were nominated and existing officers agreed to serve for one more year. The nominations were closed after the October Business meeting. As we need a quorum to officially finalize the voting, if you cannot attend the Business Meeting, please return the Absentee Ballot which you will receive shortly by . Thanks for your cooperation.
