4 2 Wound Image Analysis Wound Imaging and Accessories The Wound Imaging feature is an aid in helping the treating clinician to record treatment progress. Digital wound images can be downloaded from a digital camera into the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit. When the clinician has traced the wound perimeter onscreen with the provided stylus, an automated wound image surface area and volume measurement can be made and trended. A chronological graphical history of the wound (with wound image area trend chart) can be viewed on-screen or this information can be transferred from the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit. This information is intended to be used by the treating clinician as a mechanism for providing a record of wound healing progress. Wound imaging area and volume calculation features are not intended to be exact measurements and are not intended for use in the diagnosis and treatment of wounds. Accessories required to utilize this feature include: Digital camera with at least 2 megapixel resolution Digital camera that uses an SD/MMC card An SD/MMC card Stylus. This is found inside the Data Door of the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit. This is needed to aid in tracing. Calibration Reference Square (found on the ruler in the SensaT.R.A.C. dressing package). 5 Example of a wound image Wound Image Analysis Guide 3 Capturing Wound Images Calibration Reference Square Wound The wound image feature relies on timely, accurate and consistent input by treating clinicians. For optimal operation of the Wound Image Analysis feature, it is recommended that: The sterile Calibration Reference Square should be placed in the same location on the wound each time an image is taken All images should be taken directly above the wound The wound and Calibration Reference Square should fill as much of the image as possible The image should be taken in good light conditions Images must be taken directly from the camera, not transferred or down loaded to the card from a computer Upload each photo into the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit immediately after it has been taken Timely uploading of photos is required for accurate graphical representation Using a camera that has a date and time function will allow for easier tracking of images. The InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit will automatically apply a date and time stamp when the photo is uploaded to create the wound image area trend chart. Uploading multiple pictures all at once will not show an accurate image area trend chart.

7 Uploading Wound Images 5 Uploading Wound Image 1. Connect the source device for the wound photo to the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit by accessing the Data Door or press to view an image from the unit s internal memory. Data Door 2. Select the device you want to view images from. Imaging Exit There will be a short delay while the images are accessed from V.A.C. Memory, USB flash drive, or from the SD/MMC Memory Card. The relevant button will be highlighted with a green rim to indicate that this is in progress. Select the device you want to view images from. USB VAC Memory Memory Card When the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit is ready, the File Select Screen will be displayed. If V.A.C. Memory is selected for a new Patient Record, no images will be available and the Image Thumbnail will be black. SD 1GB

8 6 Uploading Wound Images File Select Screen The number of files that can be viewed is displayed in the File Select screen, as well as the number of the current file which is being viewed. File Select 1/20 Exit Image Thumbnail Select Image Filename filename.jpg Use the Press buttons to select the next or the previous image. when the required image is displayed. If this image is being opened from the SD/MMC Memory Card or from USB, it will be automatically downloaded into the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit internal memory. SD 1GB

9 Wound Area and Volume 7 Before measuring the image area and volume, it is necessary to scale the image. This is done by tracing the Calibration Reference Square square in the image. On-Screen walkthrough instructions are provided at the bottom of each screen to guide the user through the process. First, press shown below 1 2 Image Reference Calibration to begin the Calibration Reference process, then follow the steps Exit 3 4 Press highlighted button to mark up the reference sequare. Touch each corner of the reference square. When the last corner of the reference square is touched the corner points will be joined by a highlighted line. Use only the stylus provided to trace the Calibration Reference Square. It is important to select corners in either a clockwise or counterclockwise manner. Incorrect sequencing will lead to a calibration error.

10 8 Wound Area and Volume Wound Area Tracing The outline of the wound area should now be traced. Press to begin the Wound Area Tracing procedure. Select Image Area Select the image area you would like to trace. Image Area 1 Image Area 2 Image Area 3 Press to trace the overall outline of the wound area. All traces and results for Image Area 1 will be displayed in yellow. Press to trace another area inside the wound. All traces and results for Image Area 2 will be displayed in blue. Press to trace an additional area. All traces and results for Image Area 3 will be displayed in pink. The InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit only stores the area and depth of Image Area 1 in the Patient Log. The information in the Patient Log which is used to construct a graph.

11 Use stylus supplied to draw around the required area. Wound Area and Volume 9 Wound Area Tracing A square will appear at the starting point. The trace is completed when the end of the line returns to the starting square. Wound Area Trace Starting Square If an error is made before the trace is complete, tap the stylus at the Wound Area Trace Starting Square. Then, press the button to retrace area. This action will return you to the previous screen. When the outline of the wound image area is complete, the buttons will reappear. If required, press to trace additional areas.

12 10 Wound Area and Volume Calculating Wound Area Press to calculate the wound area inside the traced area. Area = 80.00cm2 Wound Measurement The results will be displayed in the color of the trace for the appropriate measured area.

13 Wound Area and Volume 11 Calculating Wound Volume The wound volume can be calculated from the areas previously traced and the measured depth. Press to begin the Wound Volume calculation procedure. Select Image Area for Depth Select the image area you would like to calculate the volume. Image Area 1 Image Area 2 Image Area 3 Enter the image depth using the screen keys. If the depth is less than 1.0cm, enter 0 first (example 0.75). Press to enter the depth of Image Area 1. Press to enter the depth of Image Area 2. Press to enter the depth of Image Area 3. The InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit only stores the area of Image Area 1 in the Patient Log. The information in the Patient Log is used to construct a graph.

15 Viewing Wound History 13 Patient History Menu Screen The Patient History Menu Screen will only be displayed after the access code has successfully been entered and accepted by the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit. Patient History Exit View History Delete History Export History View Graph Alarm Adjust Imaging Pressing opens the Patient History Screen, where Patient History can be viewed and notes can be added. Pressing opens the Graph Screen, showing a graphical representation of measured wound area over time.

16 14 Viewing Wound History View History Screen The Patient History Screen will display wound area and volume measurements and short notes added by the clinician and/or medical staff. For a new Patient History, this screen will be blank. Note Press to open the Add Note feature in the History Screen. Use the screen keys to enter a note (up to 30 characters). Press to return to the Patient History Screen displaying the new note entered. The notes entered will be displayed in the window area above the keys. Press to add note. Press to return to the Patient History Screen.

17 Viewing Wound History 15 Wound Area Graph Over Time The graph displays a representation of the selected wound image area over time. Graph Area (cm2) Measured Image Area Exit Sep 2006 Time (days) 30 Sep 2006 A graph cannot be constructed if the Patient History file has been deleted. A graph cannot be constructed unless measurements of the image area have been previously saved in the patient s history log. At least two measurements from different days are required (area of the image against time) for a graph to be constructed.

18 16 Press Appendix A Creating a New Access Code For security purposes, the InfoV.A.C. Therapy Unit will only allow one patient record at a time to be active. If a new access code is entered, the current access code is overwritten and all patient history associated with it is permanently deleted. Enter Access Code Cancel (4 Char Max) **** Create Del 0 OK Press the numbers on the screen keypad to enter your four digit numerical access code and press. Re-enter your four digit numerical access code. Press code and proceed to the Change Patient ID Screen.* to set the new access *This code will be required to access this record in the future Unique Access Code should be safeguarded and maintained in a safe but reachable location. KCI cannot access patient data if Access Code is lost. Follow your institutional security and privacy policies on the use and disclosure of patient s indentifying information.

19 Appendix A 17 Creating a New Access Code Changing a Patient s ID A unique number is automatically generated from the date and time. Enter the new Patient ID Press Press when you have entered the new Patient ID, or are ready to proceed. to continue to the Confirm Screen. If no changes are made, the automatically generated number will be used as the Patient ID. The entered patient details are accepted and the Patient History Screen is displayed.
