1 Teaching notes Capacity year one Water play is an important area of the curriculum so provide children with as many opportunities as possible to explore measuring water without standard measures, for example, ordering containers by how much water they hold, how many of one container it takes to fill up another, or how many spoonfuls to fill up a yogurt pot. Children can use the following word cards (which can be laminated) to describe how full the containers are: Full Nearly full Three quarters full Half full Quarter full Nearly empty Empty The following worksheets help children to read, record and use the language of capacity. 1. How full is the jug? I can compare and describe capacity and volume using full, empty, half full, quarter, three quarters, nearly full, nearly empty. 2. More or less? I can compare and describe capacity and volume using more than and less than. 3. Show the water 1 I can measure and begin recording capacity and volume. 4.
