1 Mural Artist Ruchill, North Glasgow 1. Background 1.1 Commission Summary The Ruchill Mural was originally painted by local school children in 1996 with the theme of Our Canal, Our Future. At the moment the original mural has faded and, in the summer months, it is almost completely covered by vegetation.

2 Scottish Waterways Trust has secured funding from Historic Environment Scotland to: Engage 40 people from the community in a series of creative consultation and design sessions with Artists in order to provide inspiration to revamp the existing mural. Work with a Mural Artist who will implement the final mural design during the October Week. Engage 48 young people from the community in 4 days x Canal Crafts sessions during the October Week. Sessions will potentially run on a canal boat (weather and budget permitting). It is anticipated that the new Mural will keep the historic environment in a better condition, bring life to the area during the winter months, (when the vegetation has died away), and to reconnect the local community to the canal. 1.2 Location and Form The current mural is situated on the courtyard wall of The Quadrangle building on Ruchill Street, owned by Panther Securities. The artwork is undefined at this stage, and will be developed through a collaborative process between all key stakeholders: the local Community, commissioned artist/s, Scottish Waterways Trust, Scottish Canals and Impact Arts. There are restrictions to the space and design: The final designs must fully reflect the need and input from the local community, with all designs being signed off by key partners/stakeholders

3 The original mural must be incorporated into the new design, connecting past to present. The new design must incorporate links to the area s historic environment The Mural Artist will undertake an induction to be compliant with Scottish Waterways Trust and Scottish Canals strict conservation, health and safety, lone working and water safety policies. No structural changes can be made to the space or surrounding area. The artist/s must work with the existing layout 2. Artist Role: The Mural Artist s main role is to translate the ideas of the community into a design whilst retaining the integrity of the existing mural. 2.1 Consultation and Design Scottish Waterways Trust has highlighted the following challenges: Retain integrity of existing faded mural and incorporate into new design Reconnect local community to the area Reconnect local community to historic environment Give community a sense of ownership over new design As a solution to these challenges Scottish Waterways Trust has developed the following creative solutions to engage the community: Run a series of creative consultation sessions and activities throughout September and October which will put local people at the heart of the decision making process surrounding the mural These sessions will be delivered by commissioned Artists. It is anticipated that the Mural Artist may also be involved in delivering/participating in the community consultation sessions. A handover process of community ideas to Mural Artist will take place prior to design work commencing. 2.2 Themes Themes that have been identified ahead of community consultation sessions are: Connecting past Mural design to the present

4 Local historic environment, in particular industries that surrounded the canal : Firhill Sawmills, Murano Street Glassblowers and Glasgow Lead and Colour Works The final design by the commissioned artist/s must aim to solve these challenges and reflect the identified themes. 3. Project Delivery The following timeline has been set out for the commission: Artist Brief Advertised Artist Interviews and Commissioning Community Consultation Design Phase and Sign Off Mural Installation & Launch Aug 18 Aug 18 Sep 18 Oct 18 Key Dates: Closing date for applications: Wednesday 22 nd August 2018 Interviews: Wednesday 29 th August 2018 Client meetings and consultation sessions will take place throughout September and early October Implementation of the final mural design, weather permitting, is provisionally planned for Monday 15 th Friday 19 th October Commission Budget: A total of 2000 inclusive of Vat. This must cover all artist fees, meetings, materials and installation costs. The Mural Artist is also invited to apply to deliver the community consultation sessions throughout September. Please note that these will run in collaboration with another Artist/s.

Application Procedure: Artists must submit the following information via by 5pm on Wednesday 22 nd August 2018: A 1 page response to the brief, detailing how you will facilitate consultation sessions and respond to the identified themes Recent CV including relevant qualifications, skills and experience in design, community consultation and mural installation A portfolio of previous work related to your application Successful candidates will be required to join the PVG scheme or to apply for a PVG update.
