1 ReImagining Works Request for Proposal for Artwork: Northwest Open To: Regional Artists (living within a 250-mile radius of Dayton, OH, or with ties to the Dayton Metro area) Commission Amount: $45,000 is budgeted for all artworks commissioned for this new 30,000-square-foot branch. Entry Open Date: Monday, July 7, 2014 Entry Deadline: Thursday, August 7, 2014 Contract Offered: Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 Project Completion: September 2015 Project Summary: The Dayton Metro Library (DML) seeks to commission site-specific artworks for the new Northwest branch under construction at the corner of Philadelphia Drive and Hillcrest Avenue, serving patrons from the Dayton View, Ft. McKinley and Northtown-Shiloh branches. Built on the site of Fairview High School, one of Dayton's most artistic public schools, the artwork commissioned will honor the arts-and-crafts aesthetic of the neighborhood by seeking contemporary fine craft focused on new use of traditional materials and patterns. Artists are invited to propose newly created artworks conceived in response to one of the two artworks shown below, held in the permanent collection of The Dayton Art Institute (DAI). Artists may develop a response to one or both artworks. Any aspect can be utilized as source material for the submission (color, material, style, content, composition, etc.). From the submissions, the DML ReImagining Works Committee will select the winning artists, who will meet with DML and DAI staff, architects and construction representatives to confirm plans for the commission. The artists will be required to sign a contract by September 23, 2014 and complete the work by the stated deadline. These pieces were chosen by community members, and particularly patrons of the library, by voting on their favorite of five DAI artworks. Relief Fragment from Persepolis, Achaemenid, Hellenistic Carved gray stone, Gallery Persepolis was built for the express purpose of holding ceremonies, receiving tributes and showing off. The reliefs that covered the city s walls depicted subjects from all over the Achaemenid (ancient Persian) Empire bringing gifts of tribute to the king for the Spring New Year festival, Nowruz. Stone relief carvings were also prominently featured in Fairview High School. Relief techniques, such as embossing, incising and carving are a rich tradition in contemporary craft. Kuosi (Elephant Mask) Society Costume, Bamileke people, Fabric, fur, hair, beads, ivory, feathers, twine, Gallery The beads on this mask were a form of currency, making it more than just a symbol of wealth and privilege. Costumed Kuosi society members performed a special costumed dance in honor of the king every two years, protecting his power symbolically. This object makes use of both man-made and natural materials, a methodology embraced in contemporary mixed-media artwork. It could also be viewed as an aestheic pre-cursor to Dayton s funk scene.

2 Artistic Goals of the Project: One of the featured elements in this thoroughly contemporary building will be a water fountain from Fairview High School. The committee is particularly interested in contemporary craft for this library branch, to bridge the gap between a historic, arts-and-crafts-style ceramic piece and the up-to-date visual language of the building. Proposed artworks should reflect the distinctive personality of this location: resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds; inspire collaboration, learning and creativity; and contribute to an inviting, engaging, and stimulating environment. The commissioned work can conceptually be aesthetic, utilitarian or kinetic. The committee welcomes, but in no way requires, submissions that relate to the mission of Dayton Metro Library or may provide a springboard for educational programming and/or current or future collaborative learning opportunities. Practical Considerations: Most of the selected potential site(s) for artwork will be accessible to patrons of the library; the artwork must be durable and easily maintained. See pages 4-13 for more detail on the architect s and committee s selected locations for artwork. The architectural firm for this building is Ruetschle Architects. Beautifully sited on an expanse of green, the building will exhibit bold orange accents and a butterfly roofline that will create a striking profile. A meadow-themed children s area will bring the outside in. Some of the potential spaces available for twodimensional artwork include a wall leading into a makers space; and walls in the Quiet Reading Room. There is also a significant open space bridging the café and the entry, in which floating/suspended art is desired. Submissions: Proposals will only be accepted electronically, in the form of a single PDF of no more than 10 MB. DAI and DML employees and their immediate families are not eligible to apply for this commission. Proposals must include the following: A sketch and narrative explanation of the proposed artwork An explanation of relationship between source material and proposed artwork Detailed schedule of materials, including attachment to existing surface and lighting needs Artist s CV, biography and information about similar projects completed Six to nine images of completed artwork of similar scale and material A budget, showing that all artist s or artists fees, materials, creation, travel and installation costs will be covered by the requested amount. After the Aug. 7 deadline, maquettes may be requested for 3-dimensional, suspended or other complex proposals. A stipend will be provided; presentation date would be Sept. 5. Additional Information: Jane A. Black, Director of Engagement at The Dayton Art Institute is the project manager for ReImagining Works.
