What makes the Art Tour so special is the combination of wonderful, locally created art and the striking landscapes and attractive villages in which it is to be found. What could be more enticing than the prospect of driving along empty, winding roads through unspoilt countryside, en route to your own selection of artists studios, where you can view their work, find out what inspires it, and learn how it is created? And, if you wish, you can purchase original work direct from the artist, and bring a piece of Northumberland into your home, but do bring your cheque book as few studios have credit card facilities. nearly 90 artists are poised to welcome you into their studios and display spaces, for free, in more than 50 locations scattered around Northumberland There is a huge variety of artwork on show, including paintings, textiles, photographs, sculpture, furniture, prints, books, paper creations, and more. Who knows, perhaps you are a budding artist, and will be inspired by the Art Tour to display your own work in future years? If you are, you might like to join Network Artists (for contact details, see the next page). We hope you thoroughly enjoy your days out. We particularly value your opinions on the Art Tour, so please complete and return the Visitor Questionnaire, available in studios, and take the opportunity to enter our Prize Draw for a piece of artwork.

3 Network Artists in Northumberland Network is an independent association of professional artists living and working around Northumberland. Its aim is to provide a service to the artists individually and collectively through networking and a programme of opportunities and events to aid and further their practice. It promotes economic growth in the artistic community, especially through the hugely successful Art Tour which is held annually during the summer and for a few weeks before Christmas. The association was founded in 1992 in Tynedale and now represents a growing membership throughout the whole of Northumberland. A wide range of disciplines is represented by the members including painting, drawing, illustration, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, photography, papermaking, jewellery, graphic design, book binding, glass-making and installation pieces. Network s website has a directory of members with details of the media they work in and how to contact them. Members would be delighted to hear from you and respond to your requests. The range of work and the many links and partnerships with the arts and business sector, members projects, exhibitions and educational work with local schools and organisations show the initiative and energy of Network members. 4 newcomers profiles gina underwood for further information see page 40 A lifetime spent teaching and counselling, sharing the experience of students and clients in dark times and places and in the freedom of resolution, has often led me to new aspirations and challenges. Relationships with animals; the interplay of the natural environment with the moods of weather - both often seem to illustrate and reflect these, and my work is often a meditation on how sentient beings and the natural environment can enhance our own understanding and sense of meaning. I enjoy working alongside Mary Quinn: the craic s good, the laughter loud and mutual contemplation and criticism improves our work. ann sheppard for further information see page 31 I work part-time as a teaching assistant but paint in a corner of my dining room dreaming of a studio in a big garden! I work in watercolour, producing detailed paintings of botanical subjects. Nature is transitory and we often miss moments of great beauty in the life cycle of the most ordinary plants (did you know that the spring flowers of a Larch are like tiny bright pink pineapples?). I want to freeze them in time, to encourage others not just to look but really see. In that way I suppose I am influenced by Georgia O Keefe and John Ruskin. 7 bill weightman for further information see page 17 Having recently retired from over 50 years in the building industry, 45 of them running my own business, I can now indulge in my passion for watercolour painting. I recently attended evening classes by Kate Stenhouse renowned for her inspirational teaching. I am painting landscapes of the two passionate places in my life; The North Tyne Valley, where my family have lived since The Border Raiders in the 15th Century and The hills of Andalusia, Southern Spain. My images are evocative, individual and personal - painted from the heart. cat moore for further information see page 18 I have been drawn to colour and textiles since childhood, and a lifetime of play and experimentation finally led me a couple of years ago to discover felt-making. My work demonstrates yet another dimension of the endless versatility of felt, from its origins as a utilitarian insulation fibre, to its use as a medium for artistic creation. Living in Newcastle, I have inevitably been influenced by the nearest piece of green space to me - my garden. This is the theme I have chosen for my very first collection of felt pictures, some of which incorporate linocut printing techniques as well.

5 newcomers profiles jackie lyness for further information see page 33 Jackie has relocated to Northumberland having moved from North Cumbria. She exhibited widely there, with works selected for exhibition with The Lake Artists Society, in Grasmere, the High Head Open, and the Cumbrian Open (Upfront Gallery). Her art practice is a change of direction from employment as an NHS Occupational Therapist in Psychiatry. So it was, quite literally, back to the drawing board (of art college days) in an attempt to preserve her own sanity! Influenced by a childhood on farms, Jackie paints with inspiration from the colours, forms and textures of natural subjects. The results are an unusual mix of detailed realism and experimental abstraction. janet canning for further information see page 15 With thirty years Art teaching experience, Janet has moved down from Edinburgh to Northumberland, and with her husband started The Jinty Painting School. Janet believes fully that the creative process must be an enjoyable experience and with her undiluted enthusiasm and inspirational teaching engages and encourages the talents in people, whether rekindling an interest or simply developing skills. The Jinty Painting School is set in beautiful rolling landscape in a Gin Gan which is a 200 year old circular farm building and now a fully equipped studio. We offer a variety of classes in water colour for different levels and now, through popular demand, portraiture classes. 9 carolle & sarah morpeth for further information see page 16 Carolle and Sarah are a mother and daughter who now share a studio - and a home - in Elsdon. Carolle is an artist and retired art teacher, while Sarah was, for nearly ten years, a lawyer in London. However, finding law very unsatisfying, she left her job and, after completing a degree in Embroidery in Manchester, she returned to make Elsdon her base. While their work is different in its outcomes - Sarah makes books and work in paper, while Carolle produces textile and mixed media pieces - there is plenty of crossover. Sarah draws on textile techniques in her work and both derive inspiration from the landscape around them. When you visit, you can also see paintings by the residents of Elsdon for the rejuvenated village hall. mary quinn for further information see page 40 This year s tour will be a real adventure and my first big public exposure as an artist since completing a degree in Fine Art in 2008, where I met Gina, my friend and painting partner. With her, I ll be sharing a quirky little venue which, before current use as a dental surgery, was an old butcher s shop. I was born locally, the eldest of a large family - our dad worked in the mines and steel works - and I ended up returning here.my day jobs are as a GP and mother of six, always helped by my husband, Tom. Thank goodness for the utter absorption of painting!
