His painting shows us "a slice of life" using a realistic style What color does your eye jump to in the picture? (Red) Where is it used? 3. How does the artist create a feeling of space or perspective? (Objects in the distance appear smaller-particularly the block size on the floor. The wall hanging is not very distinct as in comparison to the details on the clothing and furniture. The overlapping and placement of the woman and two men around the table.) Display Pippen's ''Victorian Interior" (\C\4G: ') 1. Review primary, secondar, and complimentary colors in the print. 2. Review shape, line and texture (doily, carpet) 3. 2 GRAYSTOl\TE ART VISTAS Grade Level: Fourth Set:A (Realism & Primitivism) TIME: 45 Min, Page 2 5. The artist, Horace Pippin, was a very gifted painter. He was an Afro-American who began painting at the age of seven when he won a box of crayons in a magazine contest. He worked as a hotel bellboy, an iron moulder and a junk dealer. During World War I his right arm was badly wounded. He would used his left hand to support his right arm and painted for hours and hours using a small paintbrush. He paints in a style called "primitivism" (write on the blackboard). Primitive painters never went to art school. Pippin taught himself how to paint because he didn't believe that anyone could teach you how to be an artist. Y Oil just hand to experiment and learn for yourself. 6. Primitivism as a style of painting has bright colors, lacks perspective (can't tell by size of objects which things are closer to you) and child-like qualities. Do ;S anything look out of proportion to you? (The vase of flowers is too big for table. Display Jean Milet's "The Gleaners" C t i(.'l) 1. Is this a realistic or primitive style? (realistic) What makes it different from primitivism? (looks real, the colors) 2. This painting is described as realistic, unsentimental and honest. Do you agree? 3. Would this painting make you feel sympathetic to the workers - the gleaners? Do you know what a gleaner is? (after the reaper machine harvests the grain, the gleaners come by and pick up the leftover grain.) Does it look like easy work? (no, gleaners worked long hours, bending down to pick up the grain, and getting paid very little.) 4. Turn your head away from the painting for a few seconds and when you look back at it, what is the fist thing that catches your eye (the blue and red bonnets). Why? (because of the contrast to an otherwise neutral colored painting. Cover the blue and red bonnets and see the difference it makes to the painting.) Display Grandma Moses' (Anna Mary Robertson) "Sugaring Oft" i. What style of painting does this look like? (Primtivism) 2. Why is this piece a good example of primitivism? (Flatness of perspective, bright child-like colors, innocent view of life) 3. Can you tell what country this is? (USA Vermont, maple sugar) 4. Can you tell what time of year this is? (children will say winter because of the snow. However, sugaring off time is actually early spring. The sap runs when the weather warms up. "Warm" in early spring is degrees. 60 degrees is a heat wave. Yes, there can be alöt of snow on the ground in early spring) 5. Discuss how the repetition of colors and lines help to move the eye around the painting. Ask about relationship of size of people and objects to perspective. 6. Grandma Moses is well respected for her paintings in the primitive style. She did not take painting until she was in her 70's and she lived to be 101. Display Henri Rousseau's "Juniet's Cart" (t'10~) 1. Is this painted in the realistic or primitive style? (primitive) How does this print differ from the other two primitives? (Background has soome perspective, yet cart and people are very flat and lack depth. Also, less overall activity in print) 2. What colors are used? Primary? (Red, yellow, and blue) Secondary? (green) 3. How many dogs are in the picture? What's going to happens? 4. How does primitive art make you feel? (Happy, cheerful art form, easy to understand and enjoy, even fun to point out "mistakes" in perspective)

3 GRAYSTONE ART VISTAS Grade Level: Fourth Set:A (Realism & Primitivism) TIME: 45 Min. Page 3 Display Andrew Wyeth's "Faraway" 1. Andrew Wyeth is considered a contemporary realist. Why is that? What do you think is the most important component: line, color, texture, value? 2. Does this remind you of a photograph or does the artist give you feelings or emotions beyond just the picture itself? SUMMATION: Ask the students if they understand the differences between primitivism and realistic art. Have them tell you. How are all these paintings similar? (They portray everyday life) You can have the students vote on the print they would prefer to have in their bedroom or living room at home.

7 COMPOSITION TO SHOW DISTANCE MATERIS: 4th_ SET A Pencil with eraser Manila tag board (41/2 x 12) (precut in Ar Vistas room) Scissors Crayons, oil pastels or felt pens Drawing paper (81/2 xii) Ruler with inches SET-UP: Pass out manla tag board, paper and crayons. (Students should have pencils and scissors) DISCUSSION: The prints shown in this lesson illustrate distace and perspective in their compositions. Some arists were more successful than others i.e. some compositions had more depth and others looked more flat. STEP ONE: First, using the tag board, pencil and ruler have the students measure 1 Yi ins from one end of the tag board and draw a horizontal line. Second have the students measure and draw a second horizontal line 5 inches from the same end of the tag board, Having done these two steps the students should have thee defined spaces on the tag board. (Samples of these steps and finished drawings are provided with the prits.) Have the students decide on an object to draw. Some ideas are: flowers, balloons, fish, trees or houses. Once decided upon the students are to then draw the same object in each space. The result will be one object 1 1I ins. High, one 3 1I ins. High and a third 7 ins. High The shapes should be simple and easy to cut out. They do not need to be as wide as the tag board. Have the students arange the 3 shapes on their drawing paper to show distce. Ask: Whch shape looks closest to you? Why? Whch is farhest away? What did you do? (The larger shapes look closer, if placed towads the bottom of the paper and the smaller ones look farer away if placed towards the top of the paper) Show example Step # 1. Ask: How else can an arist show depth? When I put one had in front of the other, what is that called? Overlapping. Overlapping is a wayan artist can show distance. STEP TWO: Now ask the students to use their shapes and trace around them onto their drawig paper, repeating the image 5-9 times. Trace some of each size for varety. Let some shapes go half off the page when tracing them. Show Step #2. STEP THRE: Notice that all lines show, Have the students erae lines to show which shape is in front of which. Add one or two horizon lines in background to fuer the illusion of depth. Show Step #3. If extra time is available, students can now add other objects or more detail to the drawing to enhance the illustration. STEP FOUR Color the composition.
