5 painting with rollers Roller sleeves are sold in short, medium and long nap lengths. A Short nap is between 4-8mm long and holds the least amount of paint. This roller is best used with gloss paint on smooth surfaces. It leaves a thin, very smooth coating. A Medium nap is between 8-12mm long and holds any type of paint well. It produces a soft-looking stippled effect perfect for walls and ceilings. A Long nap is between 18-25mm long and holds a heavy load of paint that is ideal for textured, damaged or extremely porous surfaces. Roller Preparation Prior to use rinse rollers in solvent or water, dependent on the paint type, to remove loose fibres. Make sure the roller is dry before use. Loading the Roller with Paint Half fill the well of a roller tray with paint and dip the roller in. The roller should be almost half submerged. Roll off excess paint on the ramp of the tray. Repeat this process until the roller is evenly saturated. Do not overload with paint or the roller will drip and slide, producing an uneven coat. Paint Application with a Roller Start at the top and work your way down. This allows drips to be painted over. To start push roller up and down in a diagonal motion to form an M about a metre wide. Going in the opposite direction form a W to fill the gaps. Keep contact with the surface during this process and apply even pressure for a smooth finish. Next roll in a criss-cross motion to ensure complete coverage. Finish this section by rolling lightly in vertical strokes from the floor to ceiling. When painting a ceiling, finish off by rolling lightly in even strokes towards the ceiling s light source. Move to the next section and repeat above steps. Clean up and care: Never leave a paint-covered roller exposed to air for any length of time. Wrap in a plastic bag or cling wrap to keep moist and ready to be used again. Make sure rollers are cleaned thoroughly after use and stored correctly. See Brush and Roller Care and Cleaning for full cleaning and product care instructions. For professional advice on your particular task, please speak to a paint specialist.

6 painting with brushes my project Paintbrushes are sold in a variety of sizes, 25mm, 38mm, 50mm, 63mm, 75mm, 88mm, 100mm etc. It is often best to use a variety of sizes for your painting project. 25mm-63mm brushes are best used for trim work, joinery, furniture and skirting. 75mm flat brushes for interior walls, ceilings and larger flat areas. 88mm-100mm flat brushes for larger exterior surfaces. Tapered brushes are used for cutting in and for accurate painting. It is important to make sure the brush feels comfortable in your hand regardless of its size. A brush becomes heavier when loaded with paint so remember to allow for this when choosing your brush. Synthetic filament paintbrushes Synthetic filament paintbrushes are now the most common and best suited brush for general painting, especially with water based paints. They are easier to use and clean. In most instances filament lasts longer than natural bristle. Natural bristle paintbrushes Natural bristle paintbrushes are used for all paint types but are particularly suited to oil based paints, stains and industrial coatings. Natural bristle brushes hold more paint, have a softer finish and can be used for a wider range of applications. Brush Preparation Prior to use rinse brushes in solvent or water, dependent on the paint type, to remove any loose bristles. Make sure the brush is dry before use. Loading the Brush with Paint Dip no more than half of the brush bristle into the paint. Tap off excess paint by gently tapping the brush against the side of the paint can. Paint Application with a Brush Start at the top and work your way down. This process allows drips to be painted over. Hold your brush like a pencil to achieve the best control. Apply paint using the brush tips and hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to the surface using an even pressure. Apply paint in long smooth vertical strokes. When painting timber always paint along the grain. Finish off and remove any brush marks by painting from the painted area to the unpainted area and back. This will create a smooth painted finish. Concentrate on one area at a time until evenly covered. Avoid excess re-brushing. Move to the next section and repeat above steps. Cutting In Using a brush paint a mm border around the wall surface. This is known as cutting in. Cut in around power points and light switches using a smaller border of about 25-50mm. When completing your project do not paint over the area that has been cut in by the brush. Clean up and care: Never leave a paint-covered brush exposed to air for any length of time. Wrap in a plastic bag or cling wrap to keep moist and ready to be used again. Never leave a brush in solvent or water for extended periods of time. Make sure brushes are cleaned thoroughly after use and stored correctly. See Brush and Roller Care and Cleaning for full cleaning and product care instructions. For professional advice on your particular task, please speak to a paint specialist.

7 brush and roller care and cleaning Care and Cleaning To ensure brushes and rollers last longer and maintain their original condition they must be cared for correctly. 1. Squeeze as much paint as possible from rollers, brushes and trays back into the paint can for future use. 2. Wipe remaining paint from brush or roller onto an absorbent material such as a rag or newspaper. Allow these materials to dry and dispose of with normal household waste. 3. Wash brush or roller in a large bucket with the solvent recommended for the paint used. 4. Wash brush or roller in a separate bucket of warm, soapy water. 5. Buckets of water and/or solvents should be left to rest overnight so paint sediment can settle to the bottom. When paint has settled water can be poured onto grass or garden. Solvent can be retained for future use. Paint sediment at the bottom of the bucket should be wiped out with an absorbent material such as a rag or newspaper. Allow these materials to dry and dispose of with normal household waste. 6. Shake out excess water from brush or roller. 7. Brushes Comb the bristles of brushes and shape while still wet. Brushes can be stored hanging up or flat, either in their original packaging or in newspaper. Ensure brush bristle or filament is not stored in contact with anything that can distort its shape. Rollers Rollers are best dried and stored standing up to avoid flat spots developing in the nap. Remember to always rinse roller covers in water prior to use to ensure dust and loose fibres do not contaminate your paint. Donts Do not stir paint with a brush or roller, always use a paint mixer. Never let brushes or rollers soak in water for long periods of time, this may distort brush bristle or roller fibres. Never let paint dry on brushes or rollers. Do not use concentrated detergent or very hot water when washing as this may damage brush bristle or roller fibres. Taking a painting break? Simply wrap your brush or roller in a plastic bag or cling wrap to keep moist and ready to be used as soon as your break is over. Paint Disposal If not disposed of correctly waste paint pollutes waterways and can endanger wildlife. Please ensure you follow this advice when disposing of empty paint cans and waste paint. Dispose of rags and newspaper used to clean paint applicators in normal household waste after they have dried. Do not wash brushes and rollers in water that flows directly down drains or gutters. Use buckets and dispose of waste water and paint sediment as specified above. Empty paint cans may be recycled through a certified recycling depot. Contact your local council for more information. Waste paint should be poured into a hole dug into the ground that has been lined with newspaper. The water will drain through the newspaper leaving the paint on top. When paint is dry dispose of newspaper in normal household waste. For professional advice on your particular task, please speak to a paint specialist.

Preparation Preparation of the exterior of your home can vary greatly depending on its construction and design. This preparation guide is a general guide for all surfaces. Loose timber boards should be fastened firm. Ensure all nails sit just below the surface. Fill any holes or cracks with the appropriate filler and allow to cure as per instructions. Sand surfaces smooth to remove old paint and sharp edges and to smooth fillers. Always sand along the grain of timber. Use a wire brush followed by a light sanding with a sanding block in areas required coarse sanding. (NB: sanding dust from all surface types can be harmful. Use dust masks, gloves and coveralls to protect yourself and your clothing). Thoroughly wash and degrease surfaces using sugar soap. Allow to dry completely before painting. If necessary, use a moss and mould cleaner prior to painting. Tape up adjoining surfaces and around any fixtures or fittings. Lay drop sheets to protect surrounding areas. Rinse rollers and brushes in solvent or water, dependent on the paint type. Allow to dry before use. Immediately before painting use a tack cloth or pocket duster to remove excess dust and fine particles. 9 exterior walls Application Paint drying times vary depending on temperature. Consult your paint professional for advice on ideal painting conditions. Always take the necessary safety precautions when painting. Remember ladder safety and keep the floor clear to avoid accidents. Start at the top and work your way down. This process allows drips to be painted over. Paint large areas first followed by smaller areas like window and door trims. It is best to remove shutters, screens and blinds and paint them on the ground. Speak to your paint specialist about applying a base coat, primer or rust resistant application. Priming is especially important on surfaces that have never been painted. Using a brush paint a mm border around the area surface. This is known as cutting in. Cut in around window frames, doorways and any fixtures or fittings using a smaller border of about 25-50mm. When completing your project do not paint over the area that has been cut in by the brush. For the best brush finish on large surface areas apply paint in long smooth vertical strokes. When painting timber always paint along the grain. Where possible use rollers as paint will go on faster than with a brush. Finish coating the area as directed in Painting with Brushes or Rollers. When painting: Weatherboards paint the horizontal under edges or vertical side edges first with a small bristle brush. Paint the boards with a roller. Bricks and Masonary often only require cleaning prior to painting. However old bricks that have been damaged by constant exposure to the elements may have a weakened surface and may require a penetrative primer or sealer as a base coat. Be aware brick mortar can also weaken over time. The number of coats required will depend on the paint, surface and application method used. Follow instructions on the paint can regarding drying times. Rokset Tip! Painting your whole house is a BIG job. To keep motivated it s best to see results. The best way to do this is to prepare and paint one wall or area at a time. This gives you results sooner and keeps you motivated to finish the whole house! Always take the necessary safety precautions when painting. Remember ladder safety and keep the floor clear to avoid accidents. Speak to your paint specialist about applying a base coat, primer or rust resistant application. Priming is especially important on surfaces that have never been painted. Start at the top and work your way down. This allows drips to be painted over. If you are painting the whole house, paint the gutters after the fascia board and under the eaves. Then paint the walls, windows and doors followed by the downpipes. When painting guttering, paint the inside first followed by gutter exterior. Using a brush apply paint from side to side in long smooth strokes and finish coating the area as directed in Painting with Brushes. Use a pipe roller when painting pipe work. A painter s mitt can also be used to apply paint to pipe work and reach tricky spots. Do not use large brushes on pipe work as bristles will divide down the middle making paint application uneven and ruining the brush. Repeat process for each coat. The number of coats required will depend on the paint, surface and application method used. Follow instructions on the paint can regarding drying times.
