2 BEDROOM PROJECTS DONE PERFECTLY We all love our homes whether they be a house, a flat or an apartment. But even the proudest have that one project that needs a little attention. For most it s a room that needs a fresh coat of paint. While others have been planning to paint a feature wall for a while and a few need to focus on the ceiling. Thinking about it won t get it done, doing it will and we have the perfect painting guides to help you get your project done right first time round. Let s get started Wash&Wear Lexicon Quarter

3 WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU START How much paint do I need? To calculate how much paint you need, there are a few simple things you need to know: Wall/ceiling area (height x width of the wall). Coverage rate of the paint you are using (on the can). How many coats you need (on the can). For the wall/ceiling area, simply measure the width and height, and multiply them together. E.g. for a wall of 3m x 2.4m, the area is 7.2m 2 (3 x 2.4). Then, check the coverage rate on the paint can. This will vary from product to product. The coverage rate is per coat, e.g. 12m 2 /L. So one litre would be sufficient for one coat of a 7.2m 2 wall. Finally, how many coats do you need? This information will also appear on the can label. For the example product and wall mentioned above, if it is a 2 coat product you would need 2L for the project (2 coats x 7.2m 2 = 14.4m 2. If coverage is 12m 2 /L you would need 2L). Preparation Protect unpainted surfaces and furniture Remove all furniture from the room. Lay down a proper drop sheet to protect your floors. Try not to use old sheets as paint will often soak through. Mask skirting boards, window trim and electrical switches with painter s tape. If painting the ceiling, tape around light fittings and any vents. Do I need an undercoat? Already painted in good condition If the surface is already painted and in good condition, with no stains or mould, you shouldn t need an undercoat. Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from dust, oils and grease before you get going. Unpainted walls in good condition For unpainted plaster walls, use PRECISION Sealer Binder. For unpainted plasterboard, brick or cement walls use 1 Step Primer Sealer Undercoat. Always follow the directions on the can. Australia: , New Zealand: Mould If your walls or ceiling have mould, you will need to remove the mould with Selleys Rapid Mould Killer. Scrub with a scouring pad and bleach solution (1 part bleach to 3 parts water). Leave solution on the surface for 15 minutes then wash with clean water and wipe dry. Several applications may be necessary to remove stubborn mould blooms. Once the mould has been removed and the surface is clean, dry and free from dust, oils and grease, you can paint without an undercoat. Stains If there are stains on your walls or ceiling, you will need to use a specialist stain blocker to prevent the stains migrating through your topcoat and appearing in your new paint job. The PRECISION range of specialty stain blockers will have a product to suit your stain problem. Cracks or holes Patch any cracks and holes with a suitable filler or sealant, such as Selleys Spakfilla. Lightly sand down the surface to a smooth level then dust off. Apply one coat of 1 Step Primer Sealer Undercoat over the repairs.

Follow the preparation steps on page 2 of this guide. 2. Start by cutting in around the edges of the wall with a brush these are areas the roller cannot easily reach. 3. Load the roller in the tray with a reasonable amount of paint. 4. Start rolling the wall in an M pattern. Start closest to the natural light source and move away. Then continue over the same section until the wall is evenly covered. 5. Using an unloaded roller begin in the top left corner of your wall and gently let the roller roll down to the baseboards in a straight line with no pressure. A lightness of touch will prevent new brush strokes from forming. Repeat this action, only this time, slightly overlap your last movement so your roller rubs away the line created by the previous stroke. Continue this across the area you have painted. This is called laying off. 6. Reload your roller and repeat until the wall is complete. 7. Allow the first coat to dry and repeat the total process again with a second coat. 8. Then, trial the colours on the walls to find out which one they like best. If choosing to also use a Design Effect Chalkboard, follow the instructions on the label. If painting over dark coloured walls, paint with a prep coat first. Use a 50mm synthetic wall brush. Pick an area on the wall that has natural light during the day. Paint a 50 x 50cm square with your sample pot. Allow to dry. Paint a second coat. Do this with as many different colours as you like and make sure you look at them during different times of the day. When you have all agreed which colour is the winner, you are ready to get started and it is now time to measure up the room and head to the store. Time to paint! 6 CEILINGS REFRESH PROJECT Painting your ceiling is the fastest way to lighten and brighten a room. When it comes to choosing a ceiling paint, there are a couple of important things to consider. Is the room in a damp area of the house? Is the room prone to mould? How many coats do you want to paint? Ceiling White Ceiling White is perfect for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. It has a five year guarantee* against mould, and is low odour and low VOC. Ceiling White NeverMiss lets you see where you have painted as the coat turns from pink to white. It is a one coat application product, but is not suitable for damp areas. Follow the preparation steps on page 2 of this guide. 2. Just like a wall, begin by cutting in where the roller won t reach. Using a brush, paint around downlights and edges to create a border. Cut in small areas at a time to ensure when you eventually paint with a roller, it s still wet and will blend smoothly. 3. Once you ve loaded your roller evenly with paint, begin in one corner and move fluidly in a parallel motion. For best results, work in one metre sections painting across and then down. Roll as far into the previously brushed sections as possible for best results. 4. Now that you ve finished a large section of your ceiling, and while it s still damp, you can begin laying off the paint. This is a crucial step in achieving a smooth and consistent finish. Using an unloaded roller begin in the top left corner of your ceiling and gently pull towards you in a straight line with no pressure. A lightness of touch will prevent new brush strokes from forming. Repeat this action, only this time, slightly overlap your last movement so your roller rubs away the line created by the previous stroke. 5. Once you are happy with the finish, apply the Design Effects product on your feature wall, following the instructions on the label. 5.
