1 Quilting Threads November2017 In this issue: President s Message Upcoming Meetings Program Happenings What Is Sit and Sew? Charity Report 2018 Quilt Festival Bees Lunchtime Mini Demos Quilt Tips and Resources Guild Calendar Contact Us: vqgqthreads@gmail.com New Members: Patty Stenz Jackie Fife Total Membership: 115 General Meetings: 3rd Thursday of each month, 1:00 pm Luthern Church of the Risen Savior, 555 S. La Canada Green Valley, AZ President s Message At our last general meeting, it was learned that with new members and renewals, we now have a membership of over 100 ladies. Wow, that s wonderful, but it also brings me some concerns. Let s make sure that we as a Guild are welcoming to all the new members as well as our renewals. Remember that Golden Rule and be respectful to all. I m also hoping that we all start getting more involved with the Guild and what it has to offer. There s some GREAT bees out there! Charity does so many things for the community and donates to some great local causes. You want to expand your knowledge and spread your wings a little? There s Out-of-the-Box, Embroidery Bee, and the Round Robin that can help. But don t forget about the Quilt Addicts, the lunchtime mini demos. Don t have time during the day? There is the Starlight Stitcher s Evening Bee that could be just what you need! There s workshops that need better attendance too. If you don t want them to disappear, you need to attend, participate in, and get involved in! Let s start seeing some more people signing up for and going to these workshop. They re here for you!! Janell Duncan President Upcoming Meetings Monday, November 6: Board Meeting, Friends in Deed, 1:00 Thursday, November 16: Guild Meeting, Luthern Church of the Risen Savior, 1:00 Tuesday, November 21: Quilt Festival Committee Meeting, Friends in Deed, 9:30 Monday, December 4: Board Meeting, Friends in Deed, 1:00

2 Program Happenings November 16, 2017: Lisa Fryxell will be presenting a trunk show featuring the 1/2 square triangle. She is a Tucson resident whose sewing life began at age six. Her background includes two degrees in Fine Arts and she designs quilt patterns. For the past two years, she designed paper pieced Row X Row patterns for Arizona Vac n Sew as well as a block of the month quilt which was, until recently, being taught there as well. November 17, 2017: Lisa Fryxell will be doing a workshop entitled Eight Way to Make a Half Square Triangle. These techniques take advantage of the 2 1/2 jelly rolls, the 5 charms and the 10 layer cakes as well as the more traditional methods. There are plenty of spots still available for this workshop. December 21, 2017: Today, we will be enjoying our traditional holiday pot luck luncheon. It is a time for socializing, but we are adding a new twist this year. After lunch, we will all participate in a game that was very popular at our August game fest. It involves the use of dice and fat quarters so we ask that each attendee bring the necessary three fat quarters in addition to the usual dish to pass. Place setting will be provided by the guild. December 22, 2017: There is no workshop scheduled so we will plan for a Sit n Sew if enough people sign up. You may work on your own project or one for Charities the choice is yours. Come prepared to stay as long or as short as you wish but bring a lunch if you will be here at that time of day. Otherwise, all you need is your sewing machine and your project. January 18, 2018: Nancy Landon, owner and operator of the Cactus Quilt Shop in Oro Valley and long-time member of the Tucson Quilt Guild will present a trunk show. Nancy designs quilt patterns, loves her cats, and collects antique quilts. January 19, 2018: Because Nancy is unavailable for a workshop, we will be having a different workshop instructor. She is Lou Guerin of Tucson and she will be teaching an accurate and simplified method of making the Cathedral Windows block. It is partially sewn by hand and partially by machine. If you have ever wanted to master this block, now is a golden opportunity. To accommodate needs of the church, this workshop will end at 1:30 p.m. February 15, 2018:We will have our nearly annual garage sale so now is the time to start collecting your no longer used quilting related items. At the end of this meeting, our speaker for March 2018 will be present for thirty minutes to instruct students on necessary preparations for her March workshop on collage applique of animals. If you plan to take that workshop, please stay for Nubins instruction period. February 16, 2018: There is no workshop in February so we will plan for a Sit n Sew. The same rules apply as are outlined in the December 2017 entry. What is Sit and Sew? Sit-and-Sew is a time to sit and sew in air-conditioned comfort for the whole day. Think of it as a day retreat we will host on Fridays when we have no monthly workshop planned. You may work on anything you wish; a great opportunity to get on that UFO list or you can work on charity projects. This is NOT a charity function but an opportunity to get together with other members, share, and have fun. Please bring your lunch and whatever you need to work on. Let the Program Committee know. Contact Kathleen Adams or Deborah Molineaux.

At our October meeting, we had 14 members donating 16 quilts (5 twins for the shelter beds), 12 receiving blankets, 15 pillowcase totes, 13 backpack totes, 4 tops to be quilted, 18 stockings, lots of toiletries and pull tabs, plus fabric. Thank you all! Chris Kang, director of Valley Assistance Services, came to the October meeting receive the 650 Christmas Stockings that we provided for her organization. They are most grateful for this generous gift we give them each year to cheer up some lives at the holidays that may otherwise have nothing else to look forward to. You stocking makers are most appreciated! At our meetings, we will continue to offer fabric pre-cuts for our members to put together their own charity quilts. Stop by the charity tables to see what we have next. And don t forget to pick up some of our ready-made kits to take home: quilts, pillowcase totes, and stockings. We will offer batting for charity quilts if you contact Janie with the size prior to the meeting date so it will be available for you. In October, we had two new helpers: Linda Marcou and Lea Miller. Thanks gals! Reminder: When you bring in donations to drop off on the charity table, be sure to sign in and check off what you brought. It helps to keep our bookkeeping in order. I will bring extra registration forms to the general meetings for your convenience. If you think you d like to have a printed copy of the catalog, contact me at or and I will bring one to the meeting for you to purchase for $3. Don t forget to consider making a donation to fill the baskets for the Mini Raffle. If you have any new items you re just not using, or items that still look like new that you re willing to donate, get them to Janell as soon as possible. Winners of the races will be team members. If you are not able to find a team member, Jill will match you up with someone in the class, unless you tell her you do not wish to have a team member. Her main objective is to just have fun. She will also have a special surprise during these classes. If you are a beginner quilter, you might want to consider signing up for Sew Ya Wanna Quilt lecture offered on Friday afternoon, March 23 in the Lunch Room. A booklet will be given to attendees who are registered for this class. It s a simple guide to help the new quilterwith making fabric selections, figuring yardages, learning about squaring up and cutting fabrics, planning your quilt, etc. It takes you through the process from start to finish. Before you know it, the deadline for signing up will be here. Don t forget to invite your friends to join you at the Festival. Support your guild and sign up today! We had a small turnout for the Bee, but we had great fun. We spread out all the 6 1/2 squares that we had been cutting, sorted them by color and started putting collections together for quilt kits for the members. But, the best part we left them on the table for the members to do the same thing put your own charity quilt kit together! What a concept! Some participated and seemed to have fun. We liked it, purged some fabric, and plan to continue some similar projects in the future. If members have some ideas about what you would like charity to provide for you to make it more desirable to make quilts for us, we are all ears. We will have kits available so stop by to see what we have for you. If you need batting for a charity quilt, please let us know and we will try to bring it. And if you want to donate batting or fabric to us, that is always welcome. We want you all to get involved. And we are again inviting each and every member to come to the Charity Bee. We meet prior to the general meetings, right there at the Lutheran Church. You can come by any time. We start around 9:00 and we try to put things away around 11:30, so we can enjoy our lunch before the meeting begins. Hope to see you there. The Charity Bee recently received a lot of print fabrics, but we are still in need of solid fabric (or color on color) and batting. Embroidery Bee The Embroidery Bee will not be meeting during November and December. Most are but this allows for shrinkage if you pre-wash. FOR SALE: Janome Quilter s Delight sewing machine with 10 decorative machine stitches. Mechanical. Small. Great for taking to class.
