Knitting Notes Knit te main cart first. eck for loose stitces before you weave in your ends. I used Fair Isle and Armenian knitting tecnques for te color work. Duplicate stitces worked great for adding te Oster pads under te toes. roceted cains were used for te leg and foot details. I also used tem around te eye. I also added te Grey (one ply) on te beak wit duplicate stitces. I ave included a detailed tutorial on ow to do te floating cains used on te border. J's Designer Pillows - opyrigt Judit A Helms - 4

Knitting up te Main art egin your cast on wit a piece of waste yarn, and cain up 178 stitces wit a crocet ook. reak off, leaving about 6 inc tail. Pull te last stitc troug and tie a loop in it to indicate te end you will be releasing later. Turning te cain over, count in 5 stitces and begin picking up your first row of te set up troug te single loop on te back wit your border color yarn. Tis is row marked wit a on te cart. Net set-up row - purl across. egin row 1, and follow te cart, inserting te floating cain strands as indicated. See te tutorial attac for detailed instructions. Work te cart, ten do all your detail stitces. Once you finised, turn te pillow top to te rigt, place a marker on te needle, and pick up 168 stitces down te left side. Pull needle A (your working 47 inc circle needle) troug so tat te stitces on te top and left side rest on te cord. reak off yarn, leaving a 6 inc tail. Turn te bottom up so tat te purl side faces you. eginning in te lower rigt corner of te pillow top, carefully release te cain, one stitc at a time, slipping tem on to your 2nd 47 inc circle needle(). Work rigt to left, pick up all te stitces across te bottom. Pull needle troug until te stitc just rest on cord. Turn your work to te rigt side. Pick up te left end of your N (bottom rigt and corner), and leaving a 6 inc tail, turn pillow to te rigt, place a marker on te needle and pick up te stitces on te rigt edge (168). Place a marker on te needle and knit across te top stitces once more. Turn your work to te purl side. Re-position te needles by taking te released end of needle A, and picking up te stitces you just knitted wit needle across te top to te marker (top rigt and corner). Pull te needle troug so tat te top and left side stitces are resting on NA, and te bottom and rigt side stitc are resting on needle (See illustration on net page). efore going on secure te two yarn ends at te bottom corners. Now you are ready to block your pillow top. J's Designer Pillows - opyrigt Judit A Helms - 5

Ready to lock NA needle A N needle After soaking you work in cold water and wool was, rinse it and wrap it in a towel to take out te moisture. Using NA and N as your blocking rods, pin pillow top to size, 18 by 18. Make sure to line up your stitc rows orizontally and vertically. Let dry over nigt. It was at tis stage tat I decided to do te floating cains around te inside of te frame. I used a yarn needle to stitc te cains around te inside of te frame, as tis gave me more control tan te crocet ook. Te cart sows you te intervals needed. I started at te bottom rigt edge and worked my way around, working rigt to left, ancoring my stitces in te last row of te border before te blue began. ou can see te results on page 4. I found tat a piece of yarn about 5 times te lengt of eac section worked just fine. It is a bit time consuming but was well wort it. Working up side, pick up loop in every 3rd stitc, skipping 2 in between. Working across rigt to left, pick up a loop every oter stitc. J's Designer Pillows - opyrigt Judit A Helms - 6

Once you are satisfied wit your piece, slip a piece of nylon net measuring 19 by 19 underneat your pillow top and baste te edges to te netting. Tis will stabilize your top. Te nylon net also makes it possible to stitc down any area tat you need to secure witout adding any weigt or bulk. It also allows you to stuff any areas you wis to make 3D, elping to maintain te gauge. *Note - I made te cicks 3D by adding one more strand of black Aloft to te wing area, took up te space wit poly fill, and secured te gauge surrounding it by stitcing it to te net. Te net step is knitting a seam allowance ( about 6 row, plus O) so tat you can stitc te top to a fabric back. Tis pattern requires a 21 inc square of fabric, pre-wased and pressed. Te etra bit allows for srinkage. First, re-position your needle A so tat you start te round in te upper rigt and corner of te pillow top. To do tis pick up te end of NA etending out of te bottom left corner of te pillow top. ring it around te back of your work, and begin slipping te stitces at te rigt end of te top row onto te needle. ontinue across until you get to te corner, or te beginning marker. Rnd 1 -O, slip marker, M1 (tis will be your center corner st.) O, knit to end of needle. O, M 1 in bar between te needles, O, knit 4 sts off of N. Pull NA troug so sts rest on cord. Net, reac around and pick up te opposite end of N at te upper rigt and corner, using it, knit across te bottom sts to marker. O, M1, O, slip marker. Knit to end of N. Repeat set up for corner, and knit 4 sts from NA. Pick up opposite end of NA at lower left and corner and knit across to corner. * Once you ave establised your corners, you don t ave to keep te markers in place, you can see te O additions easily. Rnd 2. Knit around, knitting all O s troug back loop. Rnd 3. Knit around working te corners as in rnd 1, working one O on eac side of center of corner. Rnd 4. Repeat rnd 2. Rnds 5-6. Repeat rnds 3-4. ind off all sts. J's Designer Pillows - opyrigt Judit A Helms - 7

Steam your seam allowance. I run a colored basting st around te pillow top as a sewing guide. Anoter metod is to make te seam allowance a sligtly different sade and us te cange in color as a sewing guide. Eiter way works. Press a seam allowance on one edge of te fabric, ten unfold. Place tis edge on te bottom of te pillow top. Pin te pillow top to te backing, attacing te top, left and rigt side. Etend your sewing around te corner on te bottom edge at least 1 inc in from te corner. Tis keeps your corners neat, and it is easier to andle te closure tis way. lip corners of fabric, and turn rigt side out. Straigten edges and sape corners. Insert form and close open edge by and stitcing togeter. If you are careful no one will see te seam. I use a stitc resembling te mattress stitc. It works nicely. ottom J's Designer Pillows - opyrigt Judit A Helms - 8

Free Floating ains y Judit A Helms On te following pages I ave illustrated ow to make tese cains. As te free floating cain moves between background stitces to form sapes, tey do not disturb te original stitc count. Tese cains lie on top of te background stitces. Te loops ride on te needle, ready for you to move tem in any direction you coose. Once you learn te concept, you will be able to draw up your own designs using tese little beauties. Tey are also adjustable, as tey are worked on a continuous separate strand of yarn.,tis allows you to tigten up any loose loops you may find later. ou migt tink of tis as croceting wit a knitting needle. Te first illustration in tis tutorial is ow to make a free floating cain diamond pattern. Eac diamond is begun wit one strand of yarn, picked up in te middle, tus leaving 2 free ends to work in opposite directions. Te second illustration is ow to andle tese cains wen using tem to overlay a border for a pillow( as I did on te border surrounding two of my pillow designs, Ms Red Hat Silkie, and Sebrigt Hen and icks), or you migt want to use tis tecnique for te bottom edge of a tunic or for and ornamental touc on te bottom edge of sleeves. I suggest tat you read te entire tutorial troug first, ten try te pattern swatces on te last page. It take a bit of practice, but once you ave te idea, you be able to make tese cain wit ease. It is important to remember for tis tecnique to look good it is again advisable to use two weigts of yarn. ou floating cains will sow up better if tey are constructed of te ligt weigt.
