Sizing is determined by upper-arm width, wrist-to-wrist measurement and overall length. Sweater shown is size 36, worn on a 36" bust and has 20" of positive ease. Striped, boxy, relaxed fit pullover with slender sleeves and a wide shallow-scooped neckline. Length is mid-hip. Needles Size 5 US (3.75 mm) circular needles for body, circular or double-pointed needles for sleeves, double-pointed needles for I-cord trim; size 7 US (4.5 mm) needle for 3-needle bind off. Notions Markers, cable needle or doublepointed needle, tapestry needle, stitch holder. Yarn Sunday Knits 3-ply yarns (light sport weight, 246 yd / 225 m per 50 gm); 2 50-gm skeins Nirvana (92% merino, 8% cashmere) earth; 1 50-gm skein each: Nirvana: berry, sand; Eden (100% merino): curry, lagoon, celery; Angelic (75% merino 25% angora): grape, aqua, buff, dijon, tomato. Or if working in two colors: 4 (4, 4, 5, 5)(5, 5, 6) 50-gm skeins main color and 2 skeins contrasting color. Substitute any sport weight yarn that works nicely to gauge. Use either two colors or any odd number of colors. Gauge 25 stitches and 33 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch worked in the round. Measure gauge on large washed swatch; adjust needle size if necessary. Skills used Joining colors, cable decreases, 3-needle bind off, attached I-cord. Construction: Sweater body and sleeves are each worked from the bottom in the round, and worked flat after binding off for underarms. Neckline is shaped using cable decreases. Sleeves are sewn on. 2 Milano Modifications To alter length of sweater body or sleeves, work a longer or shorter section of the initial ribbing. Notes on changing colors While there is no wrong way to change colors, when working in the round, the appearance of a color jog can be reduced by weaving in ends later, making a slip knot when joining colors to keep tension even. Alternatively, weaving in ends later may be avoided by splicing ends when joining. When working flat, a splice (Russian splice is recommended), in addition to saving time later on, will reduce bulk at the selvedge edge. Two-color variation To work this sweater in two colors, the author suggests working ribbing in the same color as wide stripes. Other color variations Or select any odd number of colors, divide into cool and warm shades and number them from cool light to dark, warm dark to light. If beginning the sequence with number 1, the number of the second color in the sequence will equal half the sum of the total number of colors plus 3. For instance, if there are 9 colors ((9 + 3) / 2) = 6; so the sequence would run, alternating narrow and wide stripes, colors: 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9, 5, 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, etc., with each color hitting on a narrow stripe one turn then on a wide stripe on the next turn.
