2 Martha s Patchwork Sampler Quilt The quilt is composed of pieced blocks alternated with plain blocks; four different pieced block designs are repeated in different color combinations. The king size quilt requires 25 blocks, all other sizes have fifteen blocks. The inner and middle borders are the same for all sizes; the width of the outer border is adjusted to accommodate different bed sizes. Straight-line and free-motion quilting techniques are used, and the edges are finished with a 3/8-inch self-binding. Four traditional quilt block designs are used to make the quilt; the designs are repeated in different color combinations. Illustrations show the twin-size quilt unless otherwise noted. ll border strips are cut slightly longer than necessary; trim away excess after each strip is attached. ssembling the Quilt Top 1. Each pieced block should measure 12-1/2 square; square up the blocks if necessary. Plain blocks should also measure 12-1/2 square. Lay out the blocks in a checkerboard pattern as shown in figure Use assembly line stitching to attach the blocks in column 2 to the blocks in column 1 (fig. 10). Repeat to attach column 3 to column 2. Repeat this step until all of the columns are joined. This completes the center panel. Press well with the seams falling to opposite sides on alternate rows. 3. ttach the 63 inner border strips to each side edge of the center panel. 13 4. ttach the remaining inner border strips to the top and bottom edges of the center panel. Press the seams toward the borders (fig. 12). 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the middle border strips, beginning with the side strips. Press the seams toward the borders; refer to figure Repeat step 5 for the outer border strips, beginning with the side strips. Press the seams toward the borders (fig. 13). Quilting No t e: ut and piece the panels for the quilt back as instructed in the cutting chart. Run the seams in the directions indicated in the cutting chart, and place the seams symmetrically behind the front. 1. Layer the pieced backing (wrong side up), batting, pieced top (centered right side up over the other layers). Pin or baste well, working from the center toward the outer edges. Keep the layers as smooth as possible (fig. 14). 2. Use quilting thread in the needle to match or blend with the fabric being stitched, and use a color in the bobbin that is complementary to the backing fabric. 14 3. Quilt with free-motion stipple stitch in the plain blocks and the background patches of the pieced blocks; refer to figure 15. Instructions for freemotion techniques are located in the General Instructions. 4. Stitch a wide, meandering stipple stitch pattern to quilt the inner border; refer to figure Using the template provided, quilt the middle border with a zigzag/sawtooth design next to the inner border. Stitch two lines of straight-stitch quilting on the middle border, 1/2 and 1 away from the outer border; refer to figure Quilt the outer border with a loose stipple stitch pattern (fig. 15). 7. Trim the batting and backing edges even with the quilt top. 8. Refer to the General Instructions, pplying a ontinuous inding. Stitch with a scant 1/4 seam.
