3 The Grand Quilt Trail began in the Spring of 2017 with the leadership of the Grand Quilters and Cozens Ranch Museum of the Grand County Historical Association. In a short year at high altitude, the Grand Quilters, a group of talented women along with handy male partners devoted hours to creating more than 140 quilt blocks. Creatives from neighboring Peaks & Pines Quilters and from the Friends of Cozens pitched in to beautify Grand County with their talents. A quilt trail is a series of painted wood quilt squares installed at locations along a route, emphasizing significant architecture and/or aesthetic landscapes. Currently North America has quilt trails in 43 of the United States as well as in three Canadian provinces. The Grand Quilt Trail consists of 92 public quilt or barn blocks and 50 blocks on private homes. The trail stretches from Winter Park and the Fraser Valley in the east, to Kremmling in the west, and to Grand Lake in the north. Roughly following US Hwy 40 through Grand County, it is a project that will continue to grow for years. Many blocks showcase authentic, established quilt designs and colors, while others are creative and tell a unique story. The Grand Quilt Trail blocks are either 2 ft square or 4 ft square. The base is a cut square of treated 1/2 inch sign board, coated with primer. The artist then draws the design with pencil, sometimes to scale of an actual quilt pattern. Finally, using a a colorful palette of outdoor paint, the artist completes the barn block. The idea for the quilt or barn blocks started in the farmlands of Ohio in the early 1990s. The outdoor blocks celebrate quilting in rural America. They are public art pieces that honor not only rural arts, but women s traditional arts. Dating back to the founding of America, quilting has served as a grassroots American art that is best done by women, although modern men excel in textile arts as well. Quilts not only keep the family cozy, but are a means of expression for community and for women s bonding, then as now. The Grand Quilt Trail 3

4 For decades now, the Grand Quilters meet monthly in each other s homes to share their latest creations and support each others lives and passions. Cozens Ranch Museum in Fraser is fortunate to showcase their biannual exhibits of stunning new and contemporary quilts, as well as share the precious heritage of their antique quilt collections. From these exhibits, the idea dawned to join the national movement to honor Grand County women s textile arts and start the Grand Quilt Trail.
