1 CentreStitch CQU Newsletter January 2017 President s Message by Doreen Johnson CQU chapter president, cqupresident@quiltersunlimited.org Looking Forward in Whether you embrace change, create Resolutions or prefer to maintain your current path... one thing about January is certain; the clock is reset and we begin another New Year! From a Quilting stand point this means more time to learn new techniques, brush up on existing sewing skills, finally complete an unfinished project or perhaps start a new Quilt. Whatever your goals are for 2017, I hope you will consider sharing one or more of your Quilts with us this year in QU's Annual Quilt Show. Please join us as we proudly display our Chapter quilts side by side as a Group Exhibit. Your submission could be something you completed in a workshop, a UFO you are proud to have finished, your very first quilt or maybe even something you designed yourself. It would be wonderful to have a nice variety of quilts to reflect our chapter's Spirit and diversity. And also a great setting for family and friends to see your work. As the cold winds blow during the month of January, I hope this finds you warm and cozy inside with Needle, Thread and Fabric in hand! Happy New Year and Happy Stitching! SPRING RETREAT - March 24-26, 2017 Save the date! SPRING RETREAT will be here before we know it! If you haven t been on a retreat, they are great fun. The retreat will be at the Hilton Garden Inn in Winchester. Contact: Bonnie Wagoner, bon_wagoner@hotmail.com Sign ups will begin at the January meeting. Thank you all who helped in putting this dinner on. - Linda Dyer, Social Check out this month s BLOCK OF THE MONTH pattern on Page 7!

January 21 Workshop Saturday, Jan 21 Centreville United Methodist Church Do you have photo transfer fabric sitting around and you don t really know how to use it? Come to this workshop and Pat Washburn will teach what you need to know about photographic transfer for your quilts. To register for this workshop, Rosemary Ryan (rosemary.ryan@cox.net) or Jacqueline Lehman (dlehman5@cox.net). Signups will also be taken at the December and January meetings. BOUTIQUE NEWS Happy New Year's wishes to each and every one of you. Where did 2016 go!!! 3 Page Big QU Quilt Show On-line registration opens January 1, 2017! Last entry date for quilts is February 28, 2017 at 6:00 PM. Go to QUSHOWENTRY.COM to enter your quilt(s). The site is now up for you to read the information about entries for the show, but the entry form cannot be completed on-line until January 1. For your convenience, a sample of the of form was attached to the that sent this newsletter. You may enter a maximum of four quilts per artist plus one quilt for the "Wing It" challenge. Please note that there is a drop list on the registration form for challenge quilts to include "Wing It" and "In Memoriam" quilts. TIP: Quilts may be entered on-line all in one session or separately as you have time. Your session can remain open for 12 hours IF you do not close the browser. If you have completed part of the entry form for a quilt but close the browser before submitting the entry, the data is lost and would need to be re-entered when the next session is opened. Photos will be taken at the CQU meetings during January and February from 7-7:30. Remember you will need to register your quilt before the photos are taken and a sleeve (permanent or temporary) needs to be on the quilt for photos and the show. See pages 8-9 for directions on preparing the sleeve for your quilt. Questions? Linda Keithley (linda.keithley@icloud.com) or Kathy Nagel (kenagle@comcast.net) IT S NOT TOO LATE TO START THE MYSTERY QUILT! Doreen Johnson has designed another mystery quilt for us this year and it is not too late to start it. If you have never done one (or you have and didn t love it) - you will LOVE this one! It is a fun project that works well with a wide range of fabric types - batiks, brights, traditional, reproduction - you name it, it will look great. Here s how it works... Every month until April, there will be a step published in the newsletter. You don t know what the quilt will look like until the last month! You can work along each month (the most fun way to do it), or do it later if you don t have time each month. At the May and June meetings, people bring in their finished tops (or quilts if you are really ambitious) and share them with the group. It is lots of fun to see how the mystery turns out. If you haven t started yet, see the first steps the previous newsletters. This month s step is on page 6. We are also putting each step as an attachment in the newsletter if that is easier for you to print out. If you have any questions, contact Doreen Johnson, busyhands2@hotmail.com. Thank you Doreen for doing this!

4 Info & Committee Updates Page 4 Calling All Bees! My name is Lessa Porter and I am your beekeeper. My role is to be a liaison between the bees in the guild and people who would like to join a bee. So I need to know something about all the bees that are out there. At a minimum I would like the name of your bee, a contact person and their and phone number, and whether your bee is open to new members at this time. Additionally, it would help me if you could give me additional details about your bee, when you meet, what you do, etc. as it would help me when trying to match up people with bees. And don t forget we have an Open Bee on Thursday nights at Colin Powel Elementary School (see article below). Lessa Porter, malessaporter@gmail.com Thursday Night Open Bees BLOCK OF THE MONTH 2016 Did you know that every Thursday night that we don t have our meeting, we have an informal bee in the school cafeteria? Anyone can attend and it is a great way to meet some people and work on your projects. If you want to learn more and get on the list for updates (in case the room is changed), contact Joanne Fitzgerald, jfitzgerald20@cox.net I hope that you are as eager as I am to participate in this year s CQU Block of the Month program. All the blocks will be 12 x12 and many of them will have a complementary quilt pattern layout attached. CQU Library Nothing like cooler weather to curl up with a good quilting book and start some new projects. Check out what we have to offer in the library. If you are looking for a specific book, contact me and let me check to see if we have it. Thanks, Maria Spetalnik mariaspetalnik@verizon.net I ve chosen fairly easy patterns so even beginning quilters will want to participate. Make yours in whatever color theme you want. You may wish to make one to donate and one to complete into a quilt top at the end of the year. For those who wish to make a quilt top with their blocks I will distribute 3 other different blocks to create it a 12 patch quilt. See this month s block on page 10. Cecile Hannaway, channaway05@aol.com Surgery Dolls The with this newsletter included a copy of the pattern for the Surgery Dolls. Linda Baringhaus has challenged our members to make the dolls (or other community service items) and bring them to the January meeting. Everyone submitting items will get their opportunities for prizes. If you took one of the bags Doreen gave out at the November meeting, Dec or Jan meetings would be a good time to bring the completed dolls in so you will be eligible for the prize drawing. Contact: Linda Baringhaus, lindamb3510@yahoo.com

5 Page 5 FREE TABLE Every month you can bring anything (as long as it is not too heavy to carry or too big to put in a car) to put on the table to give away "Free." It can be quilting related or not (such as fabric you don t need, a project you won t finish or a waffle iron you don t use). We often have something that is perfectly good that we are not using or don't have room to keep but other might be able to use. This is your chance to share it with friends. However, if you put it on the table and no one takes it home with them, you are responsible to remove it and take it back home with you. As you know, we can't leave anything behind at the school. Great opportunity to get rid of things that you don t need AND find some new things you never knew you wanted! CQU on Facebook Our old Facebook page was set up so that it was difficult to work with. So, we set up a new one! It is called the Centreville QU Group. If you want to be added to the group, just send Sue Heisler (sheislernc@gmail.com) a note and you will be added. Check it out! Please submit articles, ideas, shop/tool/show reviews, suggestions, websites, etc. to the Newsletter Editor, Sue Heisler sheislernc@gmail.com Thanks! Centreville Quilters Unlimited Meeting, Dec. 8, :30PM at Colin Powell Elementary School *Holiday Social and brief meeting brought to order by President Doreen Johnson *Retreat signups for March will start in January. *Visitors Sharon Green from Centreville and Karen Simpson from Fairfax were welcomed. *Galena Seiler announced the website for T-shirt, etc. fundraiser will remain open for orders until March. *Jean Klimek [sunshine rep.] asks to be informed if a member is in need of some sunshine due to illness or loss of a family member. To sign up or submit something to include in an upcoming Digest, send a note to Cindy Grisdela, cpgrisdela@gmail.com. 6 Page 6 Scrap Happy 2 Mystery Quilt Part 5 Doreen Johnson 2016 You will begin by taking out the 12 Sub-sets you completed last month. Working with just 1 set at a time cut EACH of the solid/accent triangles and EACH of your background squares in half to yield a total of 8 accent triangles and 12 background Triangles. Starting with the Four Patches you will need all 8 accent triangles and 8 of the background triangles to create your "Improved Four Patch" blocks. Being mindful of the fabric placement, you will sew your blocks with 1 accent triangle on both sides of one of the colored patches as shown in the pictures below. Trim your finished blocks to 4 and ½" square. Complete your "Square in a Square" block by sewing 4 background triangles to your 3 and 3/8" print square. You should now have a total of (4) Improved Four Patch and (1) Square in a Square block. Place them back in the baggie you stored the original Sub-set in and repeat this process with your 11 remaining Sub-sets.
