The summer is just flying by! Do you every feel like you came out of a time warp when you stop quilting. HOW did we just spend our entire morning, afternoon, evening, DAY quilting? Lucky us to have the time and space to quilt. I am grateful for our volunteers and we haven t even started the Springfield QU Quilters season with our first meeting in September yet! We had our first board meeting in July. It was a long lunch and we had a lot to cover. Trust me when I tell you everyone is enthusiastic and excited about what we re aligning for next year. There will be something for everyone! Because we re going for the broadest possible amount of fun, we just might be calling for more volunteers to help us keep the ball rolling. Please say YES when we ask for help. If you say no, is there yet ANOTHER way you could support Springfield QU Quilters? It s wonderful to have conversations about your vision and goals for SQU. Through these conversations, we ve had a shift in the members holding board positions. The shift has benefited SQU with the quilters that have stepped up into positions that they really wanted to hold. Nancy Moore will now be our treasurer and Sandra Israel will be stepping into the position of Vice President (Programs.) As per the Springfield QU by-laws, the change in the board will need to be voted in at the September 5, 2017 business meeting. Please see the list of vacant volunteer positions that are available. Is there anything you d like to do to help? *Coffee quilter: just arrives a little earlier to have the pot on and ready for everyone, manage supplies and some clean up, each business and program meeting. You could also have a team of quilters that take this on. *Quilt Donation Liaison: is a group of quilters that make sure our charity quilts get to where they need to go. I had a few of you say that you would help at the June meeting. PLEASE contact me to be helpful in delivery or coordination. *Auction/Yard Sale: GOOD NEWS! The auction has been moved to April We don t have a volunteer and it is rather quick to try to coordinate everything now. The auction team coordinates the items to be auctioned, silent auction and raffle bag items. You do NOT have to keep everything in your house! Gathering and inventories can be done virtually! It could be easy where the team keeps track of the items on line before the auction. The yard sale will be in October The yard sale pretty much runs its self. You tag your own items to be sold and SQU receives the proceeds.

2 CALL me if you d like to help with any of the specific volunteer positions, events, programs or workshops We d love to have a chance to get to know you. Why are you a Springfield QU member? What do you like best about being with the Springfield QU chapter? Send me your testimonials! We d love to be able to show how fun we are and all the great things we do. Happy Stitching! Lisa Langlais Sunshine Corner Let s bring some cheer to our members! If you know of any SQU members in need of a Get Well or Sympathy card, please let Ann Littleton know at ann.littleton@dsallc.net or by phone We don t have to light up the whole world, just our little part of the world. (Unknown) PROGRAMS September Lecture & Workshop Events Amy Friend will be coming to the Springfield QU on September 19, 2017 and will present her Lecture topic An Introduction to the Modern Quilting Aesthetic. This is a trunk show including a discussion of Amy s personal sewing history and evolution and how it fits into the modern quilting movement. She will introduce us to the characteristics of modern quilting as defined by the Modern Quilt Guild to give us a better understanding of what modern quilting is all about. The workshop is Melon Ice Table Runner (shown below) which fits in well with our Presidents Challenge! This workshop (9/19/ pm) will teach us how to paper piece and make this beautiful table runner! Please contact me ( sandra.isrel@verizon.net or ) if you would like to attend the class and I ll add you to the list. We have 5 people signed up already! The price is $20.00 with a $8.00 pattern fee to be paid directly to Amy. Outreach and Social Media We are looking to expand on the FUN in Springfield QU Quilters! To do that, we want to make sure the public knows about us. Maybe they ll want to come and have fun too?! Please join the Springfield QU Quilters Facebook page. SHARE the fun things we do on YOUR page. It helps us get the word out exponentially. I ve also created a Meetup.com space for Springfield QU Quilters. In only two days, I had three quilters message me about joining us. I think it s all VERY cool and really shows us the power of social media. If you re on Meetup.com, please go to the site and register for our first meeting in September. We are creating a document/pamphlet/ information sheet with details all about Springfield QU quilters. This is a living document and there is a lot to pull together. This document will also be something that you could hand out to people that are interested in our group, quilting and the volunteer work we do. We hope to have this put together by the September program meeting.

3 My maternal grandmother, Reba Rissler preached to me, There is always room at the table for one more. She would set the table with a long table runner or table cloth and bring everyone in for dinner. I know I could have reduced my bed-sized quilt mentality by making table runners. It probably would have worked in the UFO challenge too! Use up your orphan blocks or try a new technique and just make a few blocks. Use that beautiful fabric bundle that really called to you. Embellish!! Did you start that had to enroll in that class to find out you didn t like how the quilt was progressing with the project partially completed? Make a table runner and see how it goes. Lisa Langlais Springfield QU Quilters SQU LECTURES / WORKSHOPS SURVEY I am really looking forward to being the Springfield QU VP this year! To help me provide you with interesting speakers and workshops I m reaching out to all of you for your input. Here are a few general questions, but if you think of something else you d like to suggest please do! You can either call me on or me at NancyMoore.SQU.com with your input. Thank you, I very much appreciate your help! Nancy Moore 1. What subjects and/or types of quilting are you interested in? (i.e. applique, color theory, paper piecing, modern quilting, landscapes, scrappy, etc.) 2. Would you be interested in learning more about how to quilt and quilting techniques? (i.e. free motion quilting, hand quilting, quilting with rulers, etc.) 3. Are there any presenters/teachers that have come to the group in the past that you would like to return and lecture/teach a different topic? If so, please provide the name and I will look for alternative topics (unless you have one you d like to suggest). 4. Do you have any suggestions for presenters/teachers that you would like to see come to our guild? 5. Do you have a particular skill or idea that you would be willing to share with the group? SURVEY RESULTS ARE DUE AUGUST 30TH AND WILL BE REPORTED AT THE SEPTEMBER BUSINESS MEETING

4 E-x-t-e-n-d-e-d Sit and Sew August 15 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM Bring your lunch and enjoy extra sewing time at sit and sew! The extension cords will be available if you want to bring your sewing machine, as well as irons, ironing boards and cutting mats. See you there! Sandra Israel MEMBERSHIP Membership has continued to take in new (and returning) memberships all summer! We are starting out very strong with almost 100 members to date! If anyone is looking, or thinking they might like to participate in some aspect of SQU, I would like to offer up Membership. I've recently taken on a couple of other responsibilities at my church, and my job, so I am looking to lighten my load so that I might find time to actually QUILT! ;-) It's not a hard job, in fact, it's pretty well set up for an easy transition this September. I would be happy to meet with someone in August to go into details of the position as well as work alongside you at the first meeting. In a nutshell, it's welcoming as people enter, taking membership forms and dues and adding them to an Excel spreadsheet and turning the money over to the Treasurer. If Excel scares you, this job can be split--one person in charge of welcoming and receiving the forms and money and another person to input the information and be responsible for turning the money in. We also submit our spreadsheet to the Big QU a couple of times during the year. This is what they use to create our Directory. If you think you might like to take a shot at this, please or call me or Lisa Langlais, and we will get you set up! Getting involved is a great way to get to meet new people, make new friends and feel like you are really a part of the group. Happy Quilting, Robin Cary, Membership Chair robinkayc@aol.com Cell: QUILT CAMP Quilt Camp 2018 I know it seems like it is a long way off but I just wanted to give you all a preview of what to be looking forward to at Quilt Camp this February! We are going to have three days of fun as usual. This year s theme is going to be fun, fast and easy--small projects to finish and great gift ideas. As always all workshops and demos will be optional. I want to encourage everyone to attend for at least one day! There will be no attendance cut off, only a limit on the number of machines allowed. I am already lining up workshops and demo ideas. If you have any suggestions, requests or ideas to shar,e I welcome your input. The date hasn't been confirmed yet but as soon as it is I will let you know so you can mark your calendars. Looking forward to a fantastic year where the fun is! Jill Redding

5 Fall Retreat There are currently two openings for Fall Retreat, September 27-October 1. If you are interested in attending this fun event, please contact Joan McGowan at BIG QU NEWS David Taylor of com will be our BIG QU Fall speaker. Go to David s website for more information on him and his quilts. David s lecture is on October 19, 2017 at the NOVA Annandale Campus. Big QU has been able to secure a workshop, but there are only 30 spaces. The 30 spaces will be awarded on a lottery system. Please contact Sandra Israel, sandra.israel@verizon.net if you would like to throw your name in the hat. You WILL have to pay for the workshop. We must send all the SQU names to BIG QU for the drawing by Virginia Consortium of Quilters The Virginia Consortium of Quilters is a state-wide organization of quilters which meets three to four times a year in various parts of the state. We are a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote quilting, provide community service and document quilting in Virginia. Our organization is open to everyone interested in quilting, and members come from surrounding states as well as Virginia. At each quarterly meeting held in March, May, August and November we have a choice of 4-5 workshops, lunch, and a short business meeting. In even numbered years we have a 4-day "Celebration of Quilting" retreat with national teachers at Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center. Come join us to meet new quilting friends, learn new techniques and see the beautiful countryside of Virginia. The brochure for VCQ Celebration 2018 is now available online. Click here to read all about the exciting plans. You must be a member to attend Celeb ration, but you can join when you register. Come and join the fun!

6 TREASURER REPORT: Our revenue sources are: 43% fall and spring retreats, 23% Fundraisers (auction, yard sale and boutique), 12% Workshops, 12% Entertainment and 10% Membership (of which 50% is paid to Big QU). Fall and spring retreats essentially breakeven. Fundraisers are our biggest money makers, contributing $6K $7K to our bottom line. The categories where revenues do not cover costs are Entertainment (holiday luncheon, bus trips, hospitality and door prizes) and Education (workshops, inhouse programs and quilt camp). In addition, there are administrative costs (including rental of the firehouse) which are funded by dues and fundraisers. In FY 2017, the net loss was $2K and the preliminary FY 2018 budget is anticipating a $3K shortfall. While we have a healthy bank reserve ($21K) and can sustain an occasional loss, we don t want to dip into it every year. Therefore, in addition to controlling costs, the board is considering the following revenue generating activities: Active Outreach Program to Increase membership Request and acknowledge member donations over and above the annual dues payment in three categories: Bronze ($10 $15), Silver ($16 $20) and Gold ($21+). Donors will be thanked by category in the newsletter (with permission) Sell advertising space in our newsletter (Proposed monthly pricing $10.00 Business Card, $15.00 Quarter Page and Half Page $20.00 purchases of 6 months or more would be discounted 5%) Increase the number of items for sale in the boutique. In House Programs will suggest several items to make and we can work on them throughout the year at sit and sew a great learning opportunity! The FY 2018 Preliminary Budget follows. We are still looking at the numbers, the budget will be finalized by September 1 st. I look forward to serving SQU as the FY 2018 FY 2019 Treasurer! Nancy Moore The proposed budget will be sent as a separate document.

The third Tuesday of each month is our program meeting. The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month are known as off-tuesdays and are Sit n Sew. Come to the firehouse bingo hall; bring a quilt to baste; bring sewing; bring knitting, or just bring yourself. Sometimes our special interest groups also meet on these days. Whatever is going on, since Springfield QU is where the fun is, you can be sure that there will be lots of laughter on these days. During the summer EVERY Tuesday is an off-tuesday. We have no formal meetings in July and August. Fifth Tuesdays are the days that we devote to Quilting for Others our on-going charitable efforts.
