We have set up the meetings as follows: January 22- Power Point Slide show of the Santa Clara Quilt Show February 26 -Community Quilts Sew Sat March 1 st - finish sewing tops March 26-Janet Fesler Reversible pocket/ pouch quilt April 23-Skill Session Ann Anderson Techniques for HST including how to make the stripes go the way you want, Fast Flying Geese technique, mitered borders, and Carol Weaver colored pastel pencils May 28-Trunk show- Lynne Todoroff June 25-Relay Auction July 23-Game Night August 27-Mini Trunk Show- (Need Volunteers) September 24-Gladys is thinking about a topic of inspiration. October 22- Celebration Tea We could use some volunteers for the minitrunk show in August and, also, if you would like to do a skill for the April meeting with Ann and Carol it would be great. Denise Witte is going to teach a Saturday class this summer on dying fabric! Cindy s son s Boy Scout Troop will be doing our set up and take down this year. Welcome back to Moonstone Quilt Guild. I'm hoping that everyone had a wonderful, joyous holiday season and now you are ready to get back to your favorite hobby of quilting. It feels good to be on a routine again and be able to have time to sew. We have beautiful kits to get you started quilting again. Come to the Community Quilts table at our next meeting and check out the newly created kits that have everything in them that you will need to complete a quilt. There is a great need in this county for our quilts. Please let me know if you know of a need that we are not aware of and should be helping. If you were one of the many people who attended the open house of the Betty Chinn Center at 17th and C Streets, you were able to see Moonstone quilts on the beds. There were also photos throughout the building that showed our quilts in the sleeping quarters. (We donated three quilts, and Eel River Guild donated two quilts.) Betty was very appreciative of our donation, and she thanked me many times. She is also interested in receiving lap robe quilts for the many poor people that she visits in rest homes. We will discuss this subject at our upcoming meeting, as I do not give any donations without your approval. My warmest wishes to each of you for good health, happiness and many happy hours of quilting in this new year. Shar Evans

3 Moonstone Guild Needs Your Help! I would like to thank Margaret McNally for volunteering to take over fat quarters. Linda Glaros wants to do the mystery quilt, and Carol Weaver will be doing raffle table!! Thank you. OPEN- Hospitality - The chairperson would solicit sign-ups for refreshments or provide items out of the guild budget. They would set-up and clean-up the counter at each meeting. Relay For Life - The captain of the RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM depends on the volunteers that make up the team. A captain is the "go to" person on the team. The team members rely on the captain to help keep the events organized, running smoothly and to try to delegate the events as to not let anyone feel like they are doing more than they can handle. The captain probably has the best job, if, we have great people who help & support each other. We fundraise with an auction and a one day quilt retreat where everyone learns a new quilting method, makes new friends, makes (hopefully) a quilt, and eats wonderful foods made by the team. Moonstone Quilters Relay for Life Team is the BEST! Publicity - The Publicity person submits a meeting notice each month to the local newspapers and publicizes Moonstone s special events. Refreshments - We need Refreshment people for May, July, and September. Raffle Table - Carol has some exciting ideas to share about the raffle table and needs your help. This is our money maker for the guild. Nancy Ambrosini Nancy Ambrosini, a long time member of Moonstone Quilters and Redwood Empire Quilt Guilds, died in November She was a joyful person and a great quilter. In 2011 she was announced in the Times- Standard as the winner of both the Grand Prize and the Viewer s Choice awards for her original Sunflower Quilt in the 2010 REQG Challenge. That lovely quilt was one of several on display in the vestibule at her funeral service, attended by her many family members and friends, officiated by a priest who brought his 1972 St. Bernard s High School yearbook where he attended with Nancy and shared his remembrance of her. She volunteered, supported and participated in our Guild s board, meetings, and events. We will cherish our memories of Nancy and offer our condolences to her family. Dianne Byington Raffle Table New Year-New person to run the raffle table. Welcome everybody, and bring quilting related items. Think of Valentine s fabric. We are starting off with Susie Freese s donation of quilting for a twin size quilt. Also Ocean Waves and Eureka Fabrics are going to donate something to spice up the raffle table every month. This is our only fundraiser besides dues for the guild, so it s important to keep it exciting. I think of it as a little donation every month. I ve made up wool kits out of my stash of wool fabric. Also a bear or two might slip onto the table now and then. Carol Weaver Page 3

4 Fat Quarters It's a New Year and time to look forward. How about thinking of Valentines Day? You have a good chance to be a Fat Quarter winner. Just bring as many fat quarters as you want to share o the next meeting. Tea Party Our annual tea party was delightful! We had wonderful yummy things to eat. Sorry more of our members didn t come. Nancy Ambrosini won the block of the month finished top gift certificates and Carol Weaver won the gift certificate for UFO s. Ann Anderson sold some patterns for April Sproule. These fat quarters should be easy to find in your stash. For our January meeting; Colors are: Red, Pink, White on White. Throw in some hearts for luck. Animal: Cats Have fun! 5 Relay For Life Team 2014 Moonstone Quilters sponsors our American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life Team every year. Thank you! We are proud of the fundraising our team has done and appreciate your support of our past Quilt Retreats, Opportunity Quilt Ticket Sales, and Quilt Auction & Fabulous Fabric Sales. 6 UnFinished Object Challenge Delores Vose will be leading us on an entirely new UnFinished Object Challenge in You are invited to register to complete one or more of your UnFinished Quilts, pay $1 each, and join the challenge. In August all UFO registrants will bring their Finished UFO quilts to our guild meeting. Finished means quilted, bound, and labeled! You get your dollar back for each of your finished quilts, and we ll have prizes too! Please read the UFO registration form below for more details. and start thinking about which quilts you would like to register! 9 Four Star Square Mystery Quilt a free quilting pattern Part One There are a total of 7 parts (the "I" is the person who developed the pattern--not me,) Size? I hope you'll have some fun with this one - I won't spoil the mystery - but just so you know a little of what you'll be making: it's a wall quilt of 40" x 40" approximate finished size. It is suitable as a project to make larger for a full size quilt (and I'll talk a little about that at the end of the project). Technique? It's easy and you'll learn a neat technique that I know you'll use again and again. If you are new to quilting you will be able to do this one. If you are an experienced quilter, you will have fun and see a new opportunity here. You can rotary cut all the pieces easily, no templates are needed. Fabrics? You could do the whole quilt with only 4, but I love scrappy quilts so I'll encourage you to use some variety for some of the fabrics. Fabric A Sample Fabric B Example Fabric A Lightest and Brightest This fabric should stand out from the others. A yellow-gold, yellow-mustard is what I'm using in my sample. But you could use a bright yellow, lime, fuchsia - if you use a printed fabric the bright color should be prominently visible. Fabric A is a good choice for a scrappy look if you have fabrics with similar coloration but different prints. Fabric B - Deepest and Darkest This fabric will be a main background and should be deep toned, it could be navy, black, purples. A swirled deep-tone batik would be nice too. Fabric B is also a good choice for scrappy look, if you want to have a scrap look, use at least 4-5 fabrics for the B section. Fabric C Plaids or Prints Fabric C - A Plaid or Multi-Print This should be a medium value color fabric. I recommend a plaid, but a medium size print with several colors in it would be ok, too. Picking up a bit of the color from Fabric A isn't a bad idea - but this fabric must be intermediate in depth of color between A and C. My choice for my sample is the middle plaid shown here with the maroon background and gold and green lines. Continued on back

10 Fabric D bold stripe Fabric D - A Bold Stripe This fabric should be a bold stripe which contrasts strongly with A, B, C fabrics. The stripe on the right is my choice for my sample. There needs to be a clear contrast, especially between the plaid C fabric and the D stripe. How Much Fabric? Yardage is given for 42" width fabric, strips are to be cut selvedge to selvedge. I've allowed a little extra; but if you often make "bad cuts," you might want to add 1/4 yard to my figures. Fabric A: 3/4 yard light-bright, 1 yd for extra margin (good if mixed scraps) Fabric B: 3/4 yard deep (good if mixed scraps) Fabric C: 2/3 yard plaid or medium print Fabric D: 2/3 yard bold stripe How to Cut? (selvedge to selvedge) Fabric A: cut 1 strip 4.5" wide and 8 strips 2.5" wide Fabric B: cut 4 strips 4.5" wide and 2 strips 2.5" wide Fabric C: cut 4 strips 4.5" wide and NO 2.5" strips Fabric D: cut 4 strips 4.5" wide and NO 2.5" strips Kathy LaForge
