Presidents Message June is here and I hope we see some rain, but no hurricanes. I believe this past May was the driest month of May in years. Gale Burns and Helen Kumpfmiller did a great sister chapter get-together with Friendship Star. A big thanks to the girls that did the demos and to Nancy O s girls that did the food. I ran into a quilter who is a member from Laurel Manor and she said she had not heard of quilt chapters doing this. I told her we had been doing this for over four years and felt that it was a great way to meet other chapters in our guild. Pat Francese and Ann Boudrot have another great trip planned for June to Tomorrow s Treasures in Ocala. We will eat at Sammy s Italian Restaurant. It is in the same Jasmine Plaza as Tomorrow s Treasures. Great food. I would like to remind you that we will be meeting on June 30th to make pillowcases for the children in the hospital in Orlando. We will need ladies to cut, iron, press and sew. You can bring any children s fabric you wish to donate to make the pillowcases and we will have fabric to share. This is a Guild charity project. I hope you can come join us on Friday, June 30th at 8:30 a.m. The retreat is full. We will be meeting in the same rooms as we did last year. There will be two outside teachers and Sandy Plunkart and Ellen Miller doing our famous yoga. You can enjoy the retreat time working on the class projects that you just learned from our guest teachers or work on your UFO s. We will also be playing a few card games with great prizes! If you would like to help with the retreat please see one of our Retreat Committee ladies: Nancy W, Teresa Hatfield, Bonnie Harshaw, or Joyce Doig. In September, we will start e retreat in earnest. 2 Blotto Committee Cathy Bluemling, Kathy Wink, Mary Ann Caggiano Phyllis Speicher always pleases us with challenging blocks and her presentation for the April-May Blotto Challenge was no exception. Since there were 21 beautiful blocks submitted, we were able to hold three separate drawings. Carol Goldman and Sue Krieck were winners and Janet Nappi won the remaining extra blocks. How exciting is that?? It s participation like that which makes our Blotto Challenge fun! Keep it up, girls! Marie Nappi is up next. She will be presenting her challenge block at the June Business Meeting. Oh the anticipation of waiting to see her Christmas in July project! Charity Committee Bev Riley Our first Triple Tuesday was a big success. Thanks to your generosity, Ellen Miller was able to deliver the following items to the Christian Food Pantry in Lady Lake: 102 rolls of toilet paper 26 toothbrushes 40 tubes of toothpaste Ellen said how truly grateful the Food Pantry people were and also how busy they are. There is definitely a need. Ellen told them we will probably do this again in the fall The committee also had Ruth Mazurski write a check for $200 to give to Rosa Barber to deliver to the Wildwood Soup Kitchen. During the summer there is such a need to feed the school children who might otherwise not get a daily meal. We will hear more from Rosa about the good work Wildwood does. She is a volunteer there and has been for a long time. Yeah, Rosa! This summer is a great time to make quilts for the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) children. It s a great way to use up scraps, try new techniques and maybe try out some free motion machine quilting. We like our work to be attractive and colorful, but it doesn t have to be perfect. The quilts can be any size. The children are of all ages and appreciate having something of their very own to keep. Dee Burns has volunteered to collect any quilts you want to turn in over the summer. Techniques Committees Bev Riley, Lynn Otwell, Joyce Doig As you know, the 2 nd Tuesday of the month is set aside for our Technique demos. On Tuesday, June 13, Lynn Otwell will how some interesting ideas for the 4 th of July. This way we can get a jump on making these holiday items. So, Mark your calendar and meet Lynn in the back of the room for some of Lynn s interesting ideas Volume 13 issue 6 Lake Miona Quilters page 2

Display case Committee Doris Woodward This month our ladies, Marlene Serra and Rosa Barber, had a great idea to combine some of their work with a theme of flowers of May, Mother's Day and Memorial Day. They showed blocks with decorated hats (I love the hat with fishing lures), a cloth basket with flowers, some jeweled items and flags for Memorial Day. Thank you for a lovely display. Looking forward to next month seeing what Carol Goldman and Kathy Wink are planning to celebrate the beginning of summer and all the fun activities. If you are unable to fill the case in the month you signed up for, it is your responsibility to find a substitute. Hospitality Committee Nancy Oberliesen,Chair, Kathy Boonstra, Barb Ebmeyer, Sandy Kizer, Elaine Kent, Betty Knudson, Ronnie Steiner June will be busting out all over. Celebrating Flag Day and Fathers Day. Out and About Committee Ann Boudrot Car trips will be planned for the second Tuesday of each month, after our regular quilt meeting. We will drive to the location and have lunch before entering the quilt shop. Volunteer drivers will be needed, see sign-up sheets at our regular meetings. If we have 25 members sign up we will consider using the Villages Transportation instead of driving ourselves. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR NAME TAG or CHAPTER SHIRT to identify yourself as being with our group in order to receive any special discounts. Our June 13 th trip will be to Tomorrow s Treasures, 6122 SW State Rd 200, Ocala, FL. We will have lunch first at the Sammy s Pizza & Restaurant, 6106 SW State Rd 200, Ocala, FL. This restaurant is right behind the quilt shop in the same strip mall. We will leave Lake Miona at 11am and it is about a 30 minute drive on Rte 75N. Please see the sign-up sheets at the meetings. Thanks to everyone who went on the May trip to Trenton we had lots of fun and great food. 5 HALF SQUARE TRIANGE PRESENTATION by Beverly Riley 5/9/1 Technique #1 Cut two fabric squares equal to the finished size of the HST unit plus 7/8" for seam allowances. ( Cut 3 7/8 inch squares.) This yields HSTs the exact size needed. Illustration 1: 8" Quick Quarter JoAnns (about $3) 1.Using Quick Quarter Ruler mark sewing lines on either side of diagonal line 2.With right sides together and 1/4" foot installed, stitch 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides of the line. Cut apart on solid line. 3.Finger press the seam allowance towards the darker fabric. Press. Measure. Yield is 2 HSTs Variation - Cut Over-sized Patches Simply cut your patches the finished size plus 1-1/8" to 1-1/4". This adds an extra 1/4" to 3/8" plenty of fabric to trim away. Then follow above steps. (Cut fabric squares 4 1/4 to make 3 finished HSTs.) Sew two 4 1/4 squares together using the Quick Quarter Ruler to measure. Cut and press. Place the pressed unit on your cutting mat, right side up. Position your ruler so its diagonal line matches the bias seam. The edges of this pieced triangle square must extend past the edges of your ruler. We are trimming to get a perfect shape. To do that you'll need to trim all four sides. Don't try to line up two edges with the ruler and only trim two sides, you're defeating the purpose of this method. Volume 13 issue 6 Lake Miona Quilters page 5

Technique #2 Making half square triangle units just doesn't get any easier than this! Two squares Four lines of stitching Two cuts You've got 4 HST units ready to go into your blocks Pros fast and easy!----perfect for use with precuts. charm squares, layer cakes------no need to mark your stitching lines with a pencil Cons Not quite as scrap-friendly because the starting squares are larger----the outside edges of the finished units are on the bias use starch to stabilize edges Illustration 3: Stitch around 4 outside edges with 1/4" seam allowance. Illustration 4: Cut square from corner to corner on diagonal Illustration 5: You now have 4 HSTs. Finger press squares open and press. Trim. Volume 13 issue 6 Lake Miona Quilters page 6

What Size Blocks Should I Cut? First determine what size finished half-square triangles units are needed A Take that number, double it and add 1 inch B On paper draw diagonal line that measures B. Find midpoint of this diagonal line segment which is ½ of B. Mark this point. Lay ruler over first diagonal line with edge of ruler against midpoint. Draw another diagonal line perpendicular to the first diagonal line. Connect the endpoints. Measure all these lines. If there is a difference in length, use the largest number. This will be the size of your squares of fabric to cut. Continue following the directions above. For our sample we have used 5 1/2 squares. How to Make 8 Half-Square Triangles at Once: The Magic 8 Method- by Karen Walker 1/21/14 STEP 1: To make a Magic 8, first determine what size finished half-square triangles are desired. For example: 1. Let s say you want to make 3 finished half-square triangles. 2. Add to your 3 measurement, 7/8. (Your total is now 3-7/8 ) 3. Multiply your total of 3-7/8 by 2. (That equals 7-3/4 - Cut 2 7 ¾ squares.) /4 squares are the size needed to make your 3 finished half-square triangles. STEP 2: Cut two squares the desired size based on the formula above. STEP 3: With right sides together, draw two diagonal lines corner to corner. STEP 4: STEP 5: Stitch a quarter inch of either side of both drawn lines. Carefully cut apart without shifting the stitched fabric square. There will be four cuts: Cut #1: Vertical cut right down the center as shown Cut# 2: Cut down the center horizontally Cuts #3 and #4: Cut on both the drawn diagonal lines STEP 6: Finger press seams and press open with iron, using plenty of spray starch to stabilize. Square up to accurate finished size. Learn to Make Quarter Square Triangles Quick Pieced/Sandwich Method Pros: You never sew on a cut bias edge No special tools to buy, though you may need a square ruler for trimming the block to size No paper to remove Makes two at a time, most patterns need quarter square triangles in multiples of 2 Cons: Cut #1 Cut #2 Cuts #3 & #4 Using this method with 3 or 4 fabrics creates mirror-image blocks, most patterns require identical blocks The blocks must be marked Volume 13 issue 6 Lake Miona Quilters page 7

The Technique Step 1: Determine the finished size of the QST unit...and add 1-1/4" to it for seam allowances. (3 + 1 ¼ = 4 1/4 ) Step 2: Cut squares this size from two different fabrics. Step 3: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on one of the patches. Stitch 1/4 away from the diagonal line on both sides. Step 4: Cut along the drawn diagonal lines Step 5: Press the 2 units flat to set the seam. (For our first 5 steps, we're making half square triangles just like we did in Half Square Triangles: Technique #1.) Press the block open with the seam allowance towards the darker fabric. You now have two blocks. Step 6: On the back of one of the units, with a ruler and pencil draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. This line bisects the seam. With right sides together, alternating dark and light fabrics, align the outside edges of the two units and nest the seam allowances together. If you feel more comfortable, use a pin or two to hold the blocks together. Stitch 1/4 away from both sides of the drawn line. Some Information from the internet quilt binding calculator.htm Volume 13 issue 6 Lake Miona Quilters page 8

How Thangles Work Thangles are very easy to use. You never have to cut triangles or use 7/8" math, or square up every piece. All you do is cut straight grain strips 1. Cut your strips 1/2" wider than the desired finished size. The Thangles size and the finished size are the same. We are going to make 2" finished half square triangles, so our strips are cut 2 1/2" wide. Layer the fabric strips with the right sides together. 2. Pin the Thangles template to the fabric strips keeping the outside edges lined up. This is easy to do if you lay everything out on your cutting matt and start at one end. Put a pin in the end triangle, then walk your fingers to the solid line. This is a cutting line, but it also lets you know where you need a pin. Continue down the strip pinning at each solid line and end with a pin in the end triangle. 3. Sew on the dotted lines. Use a regular stitch length (2 mm or 12 stitches to the inch) and a regular needle (#70 or #80). You do not need to shorten the stitch length or use a larger needle. Thangles are printed on a special paper that will break away so you do not need to shorten the stitch length or changing the needle. Unlike paper piecing with office paper, you can use your normal sewing setting and needle. 4. Cut on the solid lines. You will also have one pointed dog ear to cut away. You can do it now or after you press. With Thangles you only have one dog ear to trim, with other methods, you have two, so you save time. 5. Flip the unit over so you see the fabric, open and PRESS with the paper on. You want to keep the paper on for the pressing so the bias seam is supported. Your points will be perfect. Also, When you do take the paper away, the seam is heat set. Thangles are printed with a special heatproof ink so you can do this. Photocopy, inkjet and laser inks are heat sensitive, they will transfer with heat and make a mess on your fabrics. 6. Take the paper away. Your Thangle is now read to be sewn into a block! TA DA Triangles are made of fusible interfacing and are not removed when done. Triangles on a Roll are made of paper which must be removed when triangles are finished. 10 Bias Strip Calculation from Quilt Design NW Locate width of bias you wish to make. Follow column down until you find total length of bias needed. Follow row to left to locate size of square to cut. (Note: column just to left of square size shows fabric needed for square.) 12 A Cup of Coffee with Judy Norris It's always interesting to me how these conversations begin. Right off the bat Judy tells me that she is from a long line of teachers including her grandmother. Now, from my blue collar understanding, not many people went to college, especially during the Depression, much less a woman. However, this is Judy's legacy. They all graduated from Indiana State. During The Depression her grandmother ran a boarding house for college professors when things went badly for her grandfather's bank. Growing up with this background it is little wonder that Judy also had a career in education. She taught fourth grade to college and spent most of her instruction time with fifth graders. Certainly, there is a throne waiting in heaven for anyone who has spent that much time with middle school children. Her early childhood was marred by a nine-month stay in a Texas hospital's polio ward when she was three years old. This has left her with deficits precluding her now from vigorous exercise. She didn't meet her birth father until she was in her twenties, having been the product of her parents' divorce while she was an infant. At that time she lived in Texas and then mostly raised by her mom (also an educator) and step-dad in Phoenix, Arizona. She has an adopted daughter who has a degree in public relations and interests in theater arts, radio, and TV. Judy enjoys sharing her daughter's enthusiasm for these things. She pitches in and helps out when time and distance allow. Her crafty background proves to be an asset.. She was employed for a while as a floral designer. Prior to that she was very interested in fashion (no surprise there, she's always quite chic) and did professional modeling through the Flair Agency in Arizona during her teens. Alas, she was too short for the big time Twiggy era professional modeling for an adult career. Now, she had the audacity to say that she wouldn't be a very interesting interview. Whew! We haven't even got to the reason she's here or her sewing history. She has been sewing since she was nine and quilting since she was twenty. That was the time when she moved back to Indiana and became interested in the "Country" arts. She enjoys appliqué, stamping and card making, reading both non-fiction and mysteries, mahjongg, and Mexican Train Dominoes. The reason that we enjoy her company and work is that her very good friend was searching for a retirement venue and found TV. They encouraged her to come and enjoy the Lifestyle package and she was hooked. She's been a resident for four years in the Village of Tamarind Grove. Boy, too bad this was such a dull interview, I'm exhausted! Did I happen to mention the brief post retirement stint as a bistro waitress. No? Ask her yourself, I need another cup of coffee. Thanks, Judy. Donna Volume 13 issue 6 Lake Miona Quilters page 12
