1 Lake Miona Quilters PRESIDENT S MESSAGE October 2016 It is hard to believe that autumn is supposed to be here. Mother Nature is playing tricks on us. She thinks it is still summer. It is not nice to fool Mother Nature, and it is not nice for her to fool us! Five of our ladies are going to be in the Quilt Guild Craft Show on October 8th at the Savannah. Hope they all do well. Just a reminder that the first meeting of the month is our Business Meeting and we will have the give and take table for all who want to bring articles to give away. Penny Henrickse s husband, Gene, paid us a visit and brought eight boxes of fabric, yarn and other quilting items for us to share. We presented him with the quilt that Penny did not get a chance to finish. Bonnie Harshaw finished the quilt to give to him and Penny s daughters. Thanks Bonnie. You did a beautiful job. Bonnie hand quilted the quilt to blend in with what Penny had done on part of the quilt. Phyllis Speicher will be collecting the Blotto blocks for the month. It was a very beautiful square to do. I know everyone wants to have their name drawn for the blocks. Happy Quilting! 2 Block of the Month Pat Francese (Cancelled for October) Snowbirds are just coming back to The Villages...busy time of year for members. Since no one has volunteered to do a Block of the Month for October, our next demo will be in November when Susie Lavin will help us create "Broken Dishes". (I'm one of those snowbirds...hoping to be back by the end of October.) HAPPY "FALL"...love this time of year!!) Blotto Committee Cathy Bluemling and Mary Ann Caggiano Phyllis Speicher presented a delightful Blotto Block for the month of September. Each participant is to make two blocks with hearts and swirls. The winner of these blocks will have the makings for an exquisite quilt! Kathy Wink will be presenting the October Blotto. I wonder what surprise she has in mind? Charity Committee dee Burns Thank you ladies for your generosity to our designated charities this year. To date, we have presented quilts to the Guardian ad Litem Program, Quilts of Valor, Honor Flight and Veterans for Hospice. The value of these quilts (using the Guild donation tracker) is over $2,000! We have a few more that have been turned in for the Guardian ad Litem Program that we have yet to deliver. We request all quilts for this program be turned in ASAP as we would like to make a final presentation to this group. Thanks again for all you do! Demos/Techniques Committee Joyce Doig and Bev Riley Dee Burns will do a demo on Tuesday, October 18th on using your quilting skills for making holiday cards. Some of you may have done this a long time ago but we have a lot of new members that may not be familiar with this fun project. This will be just in time for all the coming holidays. Bring Scraps to share! Quilt Guild Nominating Committee - Carol Goldman and Rosa Barber We will be voting for a Vice President and a Secretary at our meeting in November. If anyone is interested in taking one of these positions, please let Carol Goldman or Rosa Barber know. It s important that these two positions be filled. Please consider volunteering for either position. Showcase 2017 Committee - Joyce McKee and Ann Boudrot Volunteer Scribes are needed January 5 and 6, 2017 to document the judges comments at the Showcase of Quilts. If you are interested, there will be a simulation session on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 2:30 3:30 pm at Laurel Manor. Qualifications to scribe are: good hearing, legible handwriting while writing quickly, mastery of grammar and spelling of quilting terms. You will be given a study sheet so you will be familiar with the terminology. A few from our chapter have done this in the past and it was a great experience. Sister Chapter Committee Ronnie Steiner Mark your calendars for another fun event with the Mulberry Quilters. We will be their guests at their Tuesday, November 29 th meeting at Mulberry. As we get closer to November we can decide who will bring food and, of course, start thinking about demos that you may enjoy sharing. We don t want to forget Show and Tell! 4 A Cup of Coffee with Cathy Bluemling I've been sitting here wracking my brain (which at my age may result in a cerebral hemorrhage or worse!) to come up with a one-word description for Cathy. Way too many possibilities surfaced. So let's just begin with a brief history. Cathy grew up in a family of four, then she and husband Tom had four of their own. She was a physical education teacher and coached both boys' and girls' volleyball at the junior high and high school levels. When she started her family, she was a full time mom. Then when schedules allowed she was a substitute teacher. Thus, in one brief paragraph we've got "Teacher", "Mother", "Coach", general "Jockette" (that is the feminine form of the word, jock...really, look it up). AND we haven't even come around to the sewing part yet. Better get the aspirin, my head's starting to hurt. Cathy said she started sewing as a young girl in Jr. High wanting to snazz up her wardrobe. With the help of a friend and her friend's mom she made a skirt and vest. Then she was off and running. After college and getting married she most often found herself in with "Crafty" friends. Nothing was out of the realm of possibility quilt guild for her. She embroidered, did decorative painting on wood, dabbled in basket weaving, often made special matching outfits for the four little Bluemettes and finally began quilting. When she first started it was sewing by the seat of her pants. However, after some more formal instruction at a local quilt shop, she was hooked. Now all of us are frequently Wowed by her beautiful bags, quilts, table runners, placemats, glass plate decoupage and pillow slip dresses. We are also blessed with her demos, clearly presented instruction and expertise. A little more background on our Miss October; The Bluemlings are a hardy bunch almost always traveling en masse with a couple of dogs for good measure in a big old van. They use to camp in a tent on the Jersey shore in Stone Harbor. I was in that van once, it had its own story to tell. During the years when their daughter was at the Naval Academy they would travel to Maryland for events including watching her play...you guessed it...volleyball. In fact, three of her kids played Division 1 volleyball and one of her sons played Division 1 basketball. In addition to watching innumerable kids' games, it seems she watched husband Tom played softball twice a week. When did she eat? Her three sons are also accomplished. One is a teacher's aide working toward his teaching certificate in Colorado. One is a Geography teacher in Pittsburgh and one works for the Peace Corps in Chicago. Of course we all know that her Commander daughter resides in Hawaii with her own family and Commander husband. Cathy also enjoys golf, pickleball, a little biking, and walking, and that's what makes her and The Villages a match made in heaven. She and Tom have lived here for eleven years. So the next time you see our pretty freckled face friend with the tawny curly hair say hi. But save yourself the trouble of trying to label her with one word. Can't be done, I've tried.
