Flowers in the Snow by Terri Bay TECHNIQUE: Hardanger KIT COST: $35 PROFICIENCY: Advanced PRE-WORK: Yes Class description: Flowers in the Snow is an advanced level Hardanger doily which measures 9.5 point to point. It is worked on 28-count linen with two sizes of pearl cotton (#8 and #12). The students have pre-work consisting of Klosters, double cable, back stitch, and some simple eyelets. The goals of this class are to learn new cutting patterns, to cut fabric threads confidently, to work multiple filling stitches, to work the lacy edge, and to develop consistency in forming eyelets - size, shape, and even tension. Kit includes: 12-inch square of 28-count Linen DMC pearl cotton size 8 DMC pearl cotton size 12 #24 Tapestry Needle #26 Tapestry Needle Chart and instructions Student must provide: Small sharp, scissors Hardanger type 8- or 11-inch hoop or Q-Snap (tm) Any lighting or magnification needed by student to work on 28-count linen Usual stitching tools Skills Needed: Ability to stitch satin Klosters, single eyelets, and double cable without assistance (these are all pre-work); experience in cutting threads; knowledge of wrapping and weaving bars; and familiarity with reading charts and graphs. 4

Color Play by Jennifer Riefenberg TECHNIQUE: Canvas KIT COST: $110 PROFICIENCY: Intermediate PRE-WORK: None Class Description: Like a kaleidoscope of color, learn new ways to approach the painted canvas. Explore and learn color interactions and surprising effects as you stitch this design. Enhance your knowledge of color harmony. Learn about open canvas stitches and compound (or composite) stitches, too. Finished size is approximately 9 x 9. Kit includes: Hand Painted 18-count Mono Canvas 12 x 12" Threads Assorted Buttons Student provides: Stretcher bars with tacks/staples for 12 x 12 canvas Usual class stitching supplies 5

Batik to Stitch by Laura Smith TECHNIQUE: Multi-media KIT COST: $75 PROFICIENCY: All levels PRE-WORK: None Class description: Batik can create complex, stitchable designs with color layering on fabric. Wax is applied to fabric with a stamp called a tjap (pronounced chop ). Several choices of images are offered: turtle (shown), irises, dragonfly, or butterfly. Colors are painted in layers alternating with more wax. An optional crackling technique will create a marbled effect seen as navy blue lines in the turtle design above. Finally, the piece is ironed to remove the wax and set the paint colors. Safety measures are emphasized throughout the class. Students learn the subtleties of the batik process on Day 1. On Day 2, you can create stitch plans for your designs and stitch or make more batik images if you prefer. Kit includes: One yard of Prepared for Dyeing (PFD) cotton, approximately 24 wide for up to six images Paint, brushes and non-latex gloves Hand stitching threads and needles Students will share the waxing set ups, irons, ironing boards, and a Class Treasure Chest of sequins, beads, and a wide variety of threads for a wide range of color options. 6

Leaf Twirl Hoop Earrings By Amee Sweet-McNamara TECHNIQUE: Soutache/Bead KIT COST: $70 PROFICIENCY: Basic/Intermediate PRE-WORK: None Class description: Create beautiful, Soutache-covered hoops embellished with a seemingly intricate twirling-leaf detail, appropriate for adventurous beginner and intermediate soutache artists alike. Choose from five color-ways (Lullaby, Popsicle Stand, Sand Castle, Snow Angel, or Tree House), two different sizes, and select either post or ear-wire findings. The project may not be completed in class. Kit includes: All supplies needed, plus either post or ear-wire findings Student provides: good scissors a surface to work on (such as a beading mat) any additional light or magnifiers with which they like to work pliers Studio Time with Marion Scoular TECHNIQUE: Your choice KIT COST: $0 PROFICIENCY: All levels PRE-WORK: None Concentrate on one or more of your own projects to stitch and tap into Marion s infinite wisdom and knowledge of all techniques of needlework. This is not our usual casual, laid back studio time (which we will still have but is now called Sit n Stitch); this is a more formal, intensive stitching experience. If you let Marion know what technique(s) you will be stitching, she can bring appropriate reference material to Ridgecrest. 7

FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES TERRI BAY: My journey into Ukrainian Whitework began when my aunt, Sue Sandi, enrolled in Jan Walters' Ukrainian Whitework correspondence course. Aunt Sue was very enthused about the course and told me a lot about it - frequently. Sadly, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly after beginning the course and passed away when her table runner was only half finished. As I am the only other needleworker in the family who does more than basic cross stitch, she willed me her stash along with UFOs. After finishing it (there was a decade of thinking about it), I was hooked! When I couldn t find published patterns, I began putting bits of patterns together, them branching out more and more on my own. This lead to starting my design company and selling my designs. My designs are mostly whitework (Ukrainian being my favorite), Hardanger, and Blackwork with lots of various pulled and drawn techniques thrown in for the fun of it. JENNIFER RIEFENBERG: Jennifer is an accomplished needle artist, meshing her love of the arts into new and varied mediums. She loves teaching others, both the skills and the pure love and joys of art and creativity. Jennifer holds certifications through National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) as a Teacher/Designer and as a Judge. Jennifer is on the board of NAN as the Assistant Director of Judging. Jennifer has taught at National Seminars for ANG and NAN. Jennifer has won numerous awards for her needleart and other artwork. She had a piece accessioned into the permanent collection at the Gregg School of Art & Design at North Carolina State University. Jennifer is also the photographer for NAN and EGA Seminars. She also shoots fine art photographs, especially nature and black & white photos. LAURA SMITH: Laura Smith is an embroidery innovator, nationally known designer, and teacher who combines hand and machine stitching with mixed media. Her work has been shown all over the U.S. She holds the EGA Master Craftsman designation in Color, and has served as chair for the Master Craftsman Program since Her classes encourage students in the process of creating embroidery using design and color, adding mixed media, managing your stash, and art process motivation. She is past Chairman of EGA Fiber Forum and former director of an arts center. Her website is AMEE SWEET-MCNAMARA: Perhaps not so well known in the world of hand-embroidery, Amee is a BIG name in the world of beading. The name of her website, Ameerunswithscissors.com, gives a clue to what you can expect from her designs, her teaching style, and her unique personality. MARION SCOULAR: A graduate of the Royal School of Needlework, Marion specializes in Assisi, blackwork, counted thread, drawn thread, ecclesiastical, fine hand sewing, Hardanger, pulled stitches, teaching teachers, and judging. Many CAR members have enjoyed her Correspondence Courses in Hardanger and blackwork. She has written numerous books on various types of needlework. 8
