1 The Frog Prince - a double pet - by Frauke 1 of 7 Double pets or flip-over dolls consist of 2 figures that are sewn together in a way that you can flip one outward or the other. Every figure consist of a body and a head. Accessory parts are made for each figure. The possibility of variations are relatively endless so let your ideas wander freely. The frog prince is one example only. Please read the instruction completely first. There are options for several points of the pattern that you might want to check out.

2 2 of 7 You need: Any yarn you like and think is suitable. You need different colors of equal / matching quality and thickness, that is fitting for the characters you want to make. (Each figure takes between g with cotton 50g =90m, my sample) For the Frog: green, any frog colored yarn For the Prince: yarn in 3 different colors for the body (for the bottom part of body /pants, for the top part of body /shirt, and for the head), and in 2 colors for the cape For both: small amounts of white, black and other colors for the faces and accessories For the crowns: some yarn in yellow or gold 5 dpn size to knit a dense fabric with the yarn chosen 1 crochet hook, same size 1 darning needles (I used 3.5 mm needles for my sample) Finished object: about 14 cm tall and 9 cm wide in my sample

3 3 of 7 Frog body: Cast on 32 stitches in green, any method Distribute on 4 needles equally, close to round. round 1-5: round 6: round 7-8: round 9-21: round 22: round 23: round 24: round 25: as round 22 round 26: as round 23 *k1 p1* repeat for the whole round on each new needle: k 1 p1, lift the bar between this and the next stitch onto the left needle, make a purl stitch through the back loop, all other stitches: knit the knits, purl the purls, check: 36 stitches knit the knits, purl the purls beginning of decrease: on each needle ssk the first 2 stitches and k2tog for the last 2 stitches, knit all other stitches round 27: as round 22 round 28: k2tog for all stitches cut yarn with a long tail, pull trough the remaining 4 stitches, fix on inside. The tail can be used to sew up the toy later, so leave it hanging for now. head: cast on 8 stitches in green (round cast on or any other), put 2 stitches on each of the 4 dpns round 1:, mark beginning of round round 2: 1 st needle: kfb in last stitch, 2 nd needle: kfb in 1 st stitch, 3 rd needle like 1 st, 4 th needle like 2 nd round 3 8: as round 2, then each needle has 9 stitches round 9: round 10: round 11: beginning of decrease: 1 st needle: last 2 stitches: k2tog, 2 nd needle: stitch 1 and 2: ssk, 3 rd needle like 1 st, 4 th needle like 2 nd round 12 and following: like round 11 until only 4 stitches are left (1 on each needle) cut yarn, pull through remaining stitches, fill head with stuffing, then pull yarn tight and sew down. arms: knit I-cord with 3 stitches, make 6cm long

4 4 of 7 then knit the hand: round 1: kfb in each stitch and separate the stitches on 3 needles (2 stitches each), check: 6 stitches round 2: kfb in all stitches, check: 12 stitches round 3 4: Bind off with kitchener stitch. Make second arm. Alternative: 1. knit the arm as a flat strip of 3 stitches in garder stitch, make the hand. 2. crochet the arms 3. make the arm by knotting technique mounting of pieces: Sew head to body, not just in one point but about 2 knit stitches further from the middle point to attach more solidly. Sew arms to the joining point of head and body on both sides where the head is widest. create face: For the eyes, stitch big white spots or crochet plates by making a chain of 5, close to ring, crochet in spiral until the eye is about 2 cm wide, add in stitches whenever needed to create flat piece. Make 2 in the eye: stitch a black line from left to right through the middle and make a spot or star in the middle of the eye. Make a wide smile from eye to eye. Prince: body: like frog body color scheme: cast on with pant color, in round 6 above the ribbing change to shirt color. head: cast on 8 stitches in head color, (round cast on or any other), put 2 stitches on each of the 4 dpn round 1:, mark beginning of round round 2: kfb in each stitch, check: 16 stitches round 3: kfb in every second stitch, knit the other stitches, check 24 stitches round 4 7: round 8: beginning of decrease ssk for the first 2 stitches of each needle, k2tog for the last 2 stitches of each needle round 9:

5 round 10: round 11: as round 8, check: 12 stitches as round 8, check: 4 stitches 5 of 7 cut yarn, pull through remaining stitches, fill head with stuffing, then pull yarn tight and sew down. cape: cast on 14 stitches in main color for the cape, knitting is flat in RS and WS rows all RS rows are knit, all WS rows are purl, instructions only given for the RS rows row 1:, place a marker on the needle between the 2 middle stitches row 3: in second stitch and before last stitch: kfb, knit all other stitches row 5: row 7 13: row 15: row 17: row 19: in second stitch, both the middle stitches, and before last stitch: kfb, knit all other stitches odd rows: both the middle stitches: kfb, knit all other stitches kfb in all stitches cast off crochet around the edge of the cape with simple stitches, starting at one of the top corners (cast on edge) in contrast color for edging. When reaching the end: join the crochet line and make a chain that is long enough to tie with an equal cord, cut yarn so long that it is 2 inches longer than the chain, loop end through last stitch, then put on a darning needle and weave back through the chain stitches, going up in one stitch and down in the next. At the end of the chain: weave end Attach string to the other top corner, make an equal strap. mounting of pieces: Sew head to body, not just in one point but about 2 knit stitches further from the middle point to attach more solidly. create face: Stitch eyes, nose and mouth, give him a smile. Weave in hair if wanted, leave it too long and give him a good hair cut

6 6 of 7 crown: Make 1 for the Prince and 1 for the Frog crochet in yellow or gold: a chain of 16, join to round, to go from round to round: make 2 chain stitches to prevent spiraling up effect. simple stitches for 2 rounds then: one simple stitch in 1 st stitch of last round, 4 chain stitches, simple stitch in the next stitch of the last round. Continue until you close the circle with a blind stitch. cut yarn and finish sew to the middle of each head Note: the crown in the sample I made with thinner yarn, but you can use any yarn that you want. Adjust number of stitches if needed for the right side crown. attaching of figures: flip the body over the head for each figure, sew the heads together tightly, make sure that the faces are directed in opposite directions (180 degrees). now flip both bodies back off the heads and line up (do not twist the faces away from each other) sew this edge together, all around now you can flip the body over one figure or the other. The one pops up when the other disappears. Have fun with the frog prince and don t forget to give him a kiss! When you want to sew the bodies together: undo the provisional cast on and take the stitches onto needles for both pieces. Then sew together in kitchener stitch the one of the colors of the 2 bodies. This makes the joining point less visible. to create hair for the prince, you can also knit part of the head shape in purl stitch. The purl ribs then create the impression of curls. Decide on the hair cut and make the round plan accordingly.

7 you can also do bi-colored knitting for the hair, if you like. 7 of 7 Prince s outfit: to make the prince look more distinguished: knit the shirt part of the body with a structure pattern, e.g. seed stitch, linen stitch, cables, etc. glossary: k: knit p: purl RS: right side (in stochinette stitch: knit sides) WS: wrong sides (in stochinette stitch: purl sides) dpn: double pointed needle = sock needle ssk: slip slip knit lift off 2 stitches knitwise from the left to the right needle separately, transfer them back to the left needle, knit them through the back loop k2tog: loop cast on: I-cord: knit 2 stitches together knit with poking the right needle through 2 stitches simultaneously in knitwise direction creates a cast on for a circular piece of knitting that does not leave a bump, useful for a small amount of stitches that gets pulled tight: take yarn in left hand, loop into shape of a small e with the e hanging to the bottom, the tail going to the right and the tail side in front. Fix that loop with right hand, hold working yarn in left hand, 1 dpn in the right hand, in front of the loop. Bring needle over the loop and pull working yarn forward. Now bring needle trough the loop and pull working yarn forward. Continue until you have the desired number of stitches. Pull loop tight by pulling on the tail end. Now distribute the stitches on more dpn, work the 1 st round. Then pull loop closed.
