1 SUNSHINE SNIPPETS ORILLIA QUILTERS GUILD Mission Statement: The Orillia Quilters Guild is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting interest and excellence in quilting. Meeting at: Royal Canadian Legion, Downstairs Mississaga St. Orillia Third Wednesday of the month 1:00 pm to 3:00pm President Past President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Kim Wynott Betty Norberg Christine Palmer Meryl Drake Marilyn Lippert PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Gardening season is upon us! For those of us with seasonal hobbies, the choice of what to do can be confusing! It is sunny and pleasant out so I should be outside working in the garden, but the fabric that I recently purchased and on the go projects are calling to me decisions, decisions! The two hobbies are actually very similar. A nursery is like a quilt shop lots of selection, quality products, colour, texture, tools and notions. Funds are found to purchase that perfect addition to our collection. Plants are often auditioned before finding their final placement in the garden colour, and size are important. Unfavourable weeds or underperforming plants are ripped out. Sore body parts from overdoing it remind us to stretch before, during, and after the activity. Participants are passionate about their interest and willing to share advice, and, if you re lucky, a cutting. Resources abound on the internet, groups meet to discuss their craft, trips are arranged, and the unfortunate people who don t have similar interests can think we are crazy so sad for them! 2 Program Maggie Vanderweit of Stone Threads Fibre Art, Ferguson, On is our speaker this month. She has been quilting for almost 40 years and has won many awards, including 1st place prizes in CQA National Juried Shows. She will have items for sale. Carol Sears Outreach On July 18, there will be an outreach workshop to make Christmas place mats. Some sewing machines will be needed, but we also need people to iron, to cut out place mats, to assemble place mats and to turn place mats. We have some material but if you have extra Christmas material, could you please bring it to the workshop. Submitted by Loretta Hughes Schoolhouse Sewn Up, Teresa from DownUnder sends out weekly s from Australia, which link to her YouTube videos. I contacted Teresa asking permission to share her videos with Orillia Quilters Guild members and she gave me permission, with the warning that members might find it addictive! I will be presenting her video demonstrating a Rail Fence block quilt. What is so special about her videos? Her presentation is short and sweet. The bonus is that she shows many, many layouts for the block that she has just demonstrated. That just gets the creative juices flowing! (Fun fact: Teresa s YouTube videos have 38,732 followers!) 3 Grandmothers to Grandmothers This year the sale will occur on September 29 at Emmanuel Church. Arrangements will be made to pick up donations at our August meeting, or you can drop things off right at the Emmanuel Church the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday just prior to the sale. What do they need? Unused fabric, buttons, patterns, beads, ribbon, quilting supplies, knitting supplies, crochet hooks, pattern books, rug hooking supplies, embroidery floss, etc. Proceeds of the sale go to support African grandmothers raising their grandchildren (via the Stephen Lewis Foundation). Simcoe Country Rug, Quilt and Craft Fair Mark your calendar: Sept 14, 15, 16, 2018!! I will continue to represent The Orillia Quilters Guild on the Committee but increased membership on the committee is still needed. The main jobs have been filled but we can still use people who would be willing to work on the Committee to take over positions in the future. We are looking for volunteers for Demonstrations and White Gloves during the show. Lets display those quilts that no one got to see at our show. Lots leftover from the Members Market? You can put them in the Simcoe County Market to sell. (Simcoe show has about 1000 visitors to their show annually compared to our normal 400 guests). Our guild shares in the profits (15%) from the sales with the other 5 guilds. There will not be a clothing/wearables category in this year s show. The Canada 150 project was very successful last year and after discussion of various themes, it was decided to try a special category again for It was decided to go with Nature in Simcoe County, featuring flowers, trees or water; no birds or animals in the special category. All forms can be picked up at the guild meeting (this month from Penny Fitchett). The forms are due back to me by July 31,2018. Let s have a good showing from our Guild! Submitted by Pat Hill 3
