1 Northern Link Newsletter of the League of Northern Colorado Quilters VOLUME 14 ISSUE 4 AUGUST 2009 LNCQ... devoted to preserving the heritage of quilting AUGUST PROGRAM CARRIE HARGRAVE UNTWISTING THE TRUTH ABOUT THREAD Inside this issue: Officers & committee contacts 2 Mission statement 2 Advertising & meeting info 2 Are you mystified by all the threads that are available on the market today? What thread do you piece with and what thread's do you quilt with and why are they different? Carrie's masters study is on quilting thread. She has spent four years testing and studying 56 different threads in search of the answers to all of those questions for home sewing machine quilters out there. Carrie has been around quilting all of her life - sitting on Harriet Hargrave s lab as a baby while she sewed. Colors were learned with machine embroidery thread and the alphabet learned on the cams of her Mother s old Viking sewing machine. Carrie is proud to carry on the family legacy of quilting that extends from her great-great grandmother Phoebie Frazier to her great-grandmother Harriet Carey, to her grandmother Harriet (Fran) Frazier to her mom, Harriet. A Basketfull of Thanks!!!! We made close to $500 - and you all left with some wonderful goodies. A special thank you to the following donors: Shirley Christian, Happy Scrappers Quilt Group, Country Stitchers, Linda Otteman, Material Girls, Rocky Mountain Dreamers, Common Threads, Shawnette Sherwood, the LNCQ Storage Unit and Helena Leysar. 3 FROM THE LNCQ PRESIDENT S DESK Hello Fellow Quilters, Here it is August already!!!! I have enjoyed the on again off again sunshine, when we get it. But the rain has been soooo nice. My yard looks so lush and green. My tomato plant (yes I only have one!) has many blooms can t wait! Hope all of you are enjoying your summer. Our basket sale last month was such a success! Thank you to everyone who participated. We have the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival at the end of August, hope everyone received the notice. Even if you can t give time, or sew an item, I hope you get out to the Ranch (Larimer Fair Grounds) and enjoy the show. I understand it is going to be BIG! To Do: Volunteer for LNCQ ~ Share your ideas, talents and make our organization even better. Happy Stitching - Patti LNCQ TREASURER S REPORT January 1, 2009 Balance $ 9, YTD Income 13, YTD Expenses 10, June 30th Balance $ 11, Northern Link Page 3
4 LNCQ LIBRARY LNCQ Library at Sweetheart Quilt Shoppe The LNCQ library collection has been inventoried, the author and title catalogs updated and the collection organized on the shelves. Thanks to generous donations last year by Doris Stutman and Jolene Lingwall nearly 150 titles were added to the collection, bringing the total number of books in the collection to 690. The collection is organized on the shelves top to bottom in three groups: Fiction/History/Resource; Patterns/books in alphabetical order by author s last name; and Publisher Collections. Oversized books continue to reside out of sequence. LNCQ members may use the honor system to check out books for two months two books at a time. Hold My Place cards and copies of title and author catalogs and the missing books list are now available to assist in browsing the library and members are asked to make every effort to help keep books in order. The library volunteer force will continue to provide access to a sample of the collection at each bimonthly meetings and books may also be returned at those times. Currently over 90 books appear to be missing from the collection. Please check your sewing room and home for LNCQ library books and remember the Golden Rule when using this valuable resource. COMMUNITY SERVICE LNCQ has donated 8 finished quilts to Child Safe, a non-profit organization that provides therapy to children that have been sexually abused and their non offending family members. At the last two workdays many kits were made up. Twenty of these kits have been donated to Child Safe volunteers who have stitched them into tops. There is a coordinator on the Child Safe Board that has redistributed these finished tops to longarm quilters. These finished quilts will be donated to the children of Child Safe. At the June LNCQ meeting there were several quilts go out to members to be bound and a few kits out to piece tops and some tops came back that members pieced earlier. As always, I appreciate all your dedication to making and donating quilts to needy people in our community. Shawnette Sherwood Community Service Coordinator Page 4 Volume 14 Issue 4

7 ROOKIE COACHES CORNER - EILEEN MAELZER We have nine new rookie members from our exhibit at Library Park in June. In this tough economy it can be discouraging and difficult to get started without the tools needed for quilting. LNCQ Volunteers - Library Park Fort Collins - June 2009 Eileen Maelzer, Rookie Coach Coordinator, is putting together a loaning bank of tools that rookie members can borrow as they learn. We all have those extra rulers and quilting stuff in our stash - so dig deep and give a hand up to another aspiring quilter. Give Eileen a call at or look her up at our August meeting and volunteer for this rewarding opportunity to become a mentor. We need your Help at the LNCQ Booth Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival August 22nd and 23rd ******************************************* If you are working on Pillowcase Kits Zipper Bags be sure to get them to Patti Smith or Susan Rowland prior to the show.
