1 1st Place Clothing by Helen Wall of St. Louis, Missouri Reversible Blooms Jacket nfs The rounded outline of Simplicity pattern #2977 complements the graceful curves of the tulips and roses in the challenge fabric in my jacket entry. I softened the brightness of the fabric by using its gray scale sister to create a reversible lining. Brilliant colored pieces of nine Hoffman fabrics were appliqued to the sleeves and back and stand out against the underlying gray. The appliques were delineated with blue- purple iridescent beading, giving the effect of a stained glass window. The jacket was delicately outlined with gray glass beads and the yoke and sleeves were bordered with self- made piping for higher definition. The jacket's focal point is the "Blooms" pattern sunburst applique set on the "Payne's Gray" coordinating fabric. The sunburst was formed from a fabric square, which was cut and then spread. The yoke was couched with meandering red and black rayon threads to contrast the sharp sunburst edges. A single shaft of sunburst (pieced together from nine Hoffman fabrics) was appliqued down the back and each sleeve, decorated with iridescent seed and bugle beads. The jacket is fully lined with the gray scale sister fabric of "Blooms" with a "Rainbow" sunburst inside, and outlined with over hand- sewn 600 gray beads.

2 2 nd Place Clothing by Barbara A. Lambrecht of Hayden, Idaho Garden of Stars nfs Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadow of Heaven blossomed the lovely stars, the forget- me- nots of angels. Hoffman challenge fabric #P4299 color 562, P Rainbow, P Prism and Hoffman batiks in hot pink and black.

3 3 rd Place Clothing by Marijke van Welzen of the Netherlands STILL ( teeming with) LIFE nfs Inspired by the Mastery print I chose to depict two giant STILL LIFES. cotton, plastic insects and leaves.

4 Hoffman s Choice Clothing by Frances Kopp Krupka of Woodbridge, Illinois Dutch Bouquet Many of the fabrics pulled for the patchwork, including Hoffman batiks and binding, have been in my stash for up to 20 years and mixed happily with the new. Flowers were cut for bouquets to decorate areas of patchwork for fronts and back and applied liberally with raw edges zigzagged in place. The entire piece was free-motion quilted on my long-arm with a flat metallic thread. The pattern is an original with in-seam pockets. Cotton prints and batiks, fussy-cut designs, original design patchwork, raw edge applique, long-arm machine quilted to flannel with Superior Glitter thread.

5 Honorable Mention Clothing by Eve Kovacs of Woodbridge, Illinois Denim in Bloom For Sale $599. An opulent denim coat inspired me from designer Alexander McQueen. The coat was shaped with princess seams and has an interesting zipper detail on the front panels. I created my own version by appliqueing selected blooms from the challenge fabric onto a quilted denim surface. Additional texture was given to the flowers by using trapunto techniques. The appliques are finished with machine-embroidered satin stitch. I included the zipper detail to keep the look fashionable and add a bit of edge. Denim, Hoffman challenge fabric, rayon embroidery thread. Techniques include machine quilting and applique, topstitching. Coat is tailored using modern tailoring techniques.
