When I first moved to the South in 2001, I was told in one local knitting shop that Georgia women stop knitting when the weather warms up. That turned out to be wrong! (Wonder if that explains why that shop's not around any longer?) Just to prove this point, this past weekend, several of the local shops held their annual Spring Fling. The Guild had a small table there and we saw a lot of knitters and crocheters taking classes and fondling yarn. I'd like to thank the shops for putting together such a nice event for all the fiber junkies in our area; I hope it was successful for all of them too. We talked to several people about membership, about workshops, including Brooke Nico's classes in the Fall, and wound some yarn for charity. It was definitely a good weekend. Thank you also to the Guild members who "personed" the AKG table. And speaking of helping the Guild, this is the time when we elect new officers to guide the Board in the coming year. We need volunteers to make this Guild even stronger. Please don't think that you don't have enough experience with the Guild to help, or that you're not experienced enough as a knitter. I was tapped as an officer the first year I was in the Guild and it helped me make friends and feel like I was part of the solution. Please call me ( ) and tell me you're willing to help with taking on a role with the Board this year. Question - The Aran seaman's intricately cabled sweater was used for identification - fact or fiction? The Aran knitting tradition is centuries old - fact or fiction? I will answer these questions (and more!) as we head to Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer during our next guild meeting. Cables (based on the Saxon Braid, Barbara Walker's Charted Knitting Designs, page 86) You should have completed your transition row from the 50 Rovaniemi stitches in-the-round to the 30 stitches for your cable pattern knit flat. The reason we are not decreasing all the way back to our original 24/25 stitches is that cables tend to 'pull in' and decrease the width of knitted fabric; they also create more density thus air pockets and warmth. For our scarf to remain about the same width, we need additional stitches in the cable section. On the wrong side return row, please knit the set-up row. I LOVE charts for cables as you can see what your knitting should look like, just by looking at the chart. But for those chart 'new bees' out there - here are the set-up row and the first right side row in words (this will allow you to compare the chart to the written directions for confirmation). Set-up Row (WS) p1, k4, p4, k4, p4, k4, p4, k4, p1 First Pattern Row (RS) p1, k1, p3, cable 2X2 right, p4, cable 2X2 right, p4, cable 2X2 right, p3, k1, p1 cable 2X2 right = slip two st to the cable needle, hold to the back, k2, k2 from the cable needle Now - the chart (I did four repeats, except please DO NOT complete the final row 16, as we will use that row to transition to our Orenburg lace edging). And remember that on a wrong side row knit flat, an executed purl appears as a

3 knit stitch on the right side and an executed knit appears as a purl on the right side. Mini-workshops Delia Jaquette and Freida Page Kay Mathers of Rare Purls will instruct a workshop on "How to Successfully Match Your Project Pattern and Yarn." The workshop will expand on the information presented by Kay at the January AKG guild meeting. Participants will learn about different fibers, their characteristics, and how to select yarn for a project. Participants are encouraged to bring to class unfinished projects where the yarn choice is not working, stash yarn needing a project, or patterns where a substitute yarn is required. Kay will provide assistance selecting a pattern or yarn. This will be a very hands-on, interactive class. The workshop will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the new SEFAA location in Chamblee. Registration forms will be available at the March guild meeting. This will be our first min-workshop in the new location. We are really looking forward to our first visit to the new facility. 4 Hospitality Stephanie Johnson Members whose last name begins with the letters A - E should bring a snack (salty or sweet), or a dessert for the group to share. The Guild will provide coffee, hot tea, unsweetened iced tea, water, and paper products, as usual. Spring Fling The Atlanta Knitting Guild was well represented at the recent Spring Fling sponsored by several area yarn stores and merchants. Tips and Tricks of the [Knitting] Trade Pam Cornutt When I was knitting Fox Paws, there was a K5tog (knit five stitches together). Now, I don't know about you, but I have a hard time getting my needles (even lovely Signature stilettos) through FIVE stitches. Here is my 'cheat' - K2tog; slip that stitch back to your left needle and pull the next three stitches (one at a time) over the K2tog (sort of like a bind off); then slip your K5tog to the right hand needle and knit merrily along. The result is exactly (no twisting, no incorrect order) like a K5tog without all of the frustration. Happy Knitting :-) Pam= From our Librarian... 7 Knitting it forward Karleen Buchholz Special recognition goes to Jean Guneysu. She donated an entire suitcase full of dressed bears. Many children will benefit from her efforts. Bear Delivery Carol Hassell delivered bags of animals this week to the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy in DeKalb County. She got the bears from the professional hockey team in town. They did a donation night. Many bags of bears were delivered to the Dekalb County Family Protection Unit. They appreciate all the bears that they give to children in stressful situations.

News from SEFAA EXHIBITION 2016 Square Foot Fiber Pinup Show, April 2-30, This is our sixth year presenting this really fun and inspiring exhibition. It is open to anyone anywhere and the only rules are that the pieces must include fiber or employ a fiber technique, and fit into a 12" x 12" area. The 2016 Square Foot Fiber Pinup Show opening reception will be Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 2-4 pm. Come by to see the artwork and vote on your favorites. If you can't make the opening, come any Lunchtime Fiber session between April 2 and May 5. Lunchtime Fiber is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am - 2 pm. View the exhibition and stay to work on a project while you are there. The closing reception of the exhibition and official opening of the SEFAA Center Gallery will be Saturday, April 30, from 2-4 pm.
