2 TIPPERARY CULTURE NIGHT COMMISSION In a new strand this year we put an open call out to artists and creatives based in Tipperary to propose a unique, site specific, temporary artwork specially commissioned for Culture Night. BALLINA & KILLALOE CAHIR 2CANDOARTS (in association with South Tipperary Arts Centre) present APPLE TREASURES - TRAIL & EXHIBITION South Tipperary Arts Centre, Nelson Street, Clonmel (map will be available on the night). 5-8pm A celebration of the unique Apple Heritage of Clonmel with an interactive applethemed tree trail and project exhibition through Clonmel s apple and cider core. The culmination of a collaborative research process and artistic inquiry, the Apple Treasures Trail will presence Clonmel s unique heritage and historical links to apple growing and cider-making. The trail and exhibition are bringing apples centre-stage back into the heart of Clonmel, in the proximity of the original Bulmers apple crushing plant of Dowd s Lane and the Friary area. The exhibition and trail are the result of an imaginative research harvesting process which takes the form of an arts installation where stories, juicy facts, vignettes about apples are presented to surprise, delight and inform us on the treasures of Clonmel s unique Apple Heritage. The trail comprises of 17 trees to reflect the 17 varieties of apples grown in Bulmers orchards. With the support of writer/performer Louise Garcia as Lady Apple Pip, 2cando Arts invite you to discover the apple treasures trail, taking in Parnell Street, Mitchell Street, the Friary Car Park, and Dowd s Lane. You can also meet Lady Apple Pip at the Arts Centre where applethemed refreshments will be served and where Eimear King s specially commissioned short film: Clonmel s Treasured Apple People will be screened throughout the evening. 2Cando Arts is an artistic and collaborative vehicle formed in 2007 by Theresia Guschlbauer and Lyn Mather to create public interventions and site-specific installations and events in Clonmel. As artistic collaborators, Lyn and Theresia jointly devise, develop and manage projects and continue to be active in the community with such initiatives as Clonmel Street Feast, the annual Clonmel Halloween walk (in its 6th year) and International Women s Day celebrations. Additional support from Creative Ireland and special thanks to Eric Ryan of County Tipperary Environment Section. 3 CARRICK- ON-SUIR Walk a mile in my shoes 2-4pm TUDOR ARTISAN HUB & TOWN CENTRE t w Short Films Screening 5-7pm Over 13 CARRICK-ON-SUIR LIBRARY Fairgreen, Carrick-on-Suir t w If These Chairs Could Talk - The Art of Storytelling pm Come along to a night of storytelling, music and art in Carrick-on-Suir Library. This art installation project is collaboration between visual artists and local creative writers where the Visual meets the Verbal!! The installation initiated by Linda Fahy, the Tudor Artisan Hub was created for the Clancy Brothers Festival, Carrickon-Suir 2017 in association with creative writing tutor Margaret O Brien, Writing Changes Lives. Local artists transformed kitchen chairs into unique objet s d art based on Carrick-on-Suir s rich heritage and culture. Local writers were then challenged to write a short story inspired by these unique artwork creations with little or no collaboration with the artist. The results were uncanny, unearthing some amazing powerful connections! Come along and see how these two mediums interacted, view the chairs and listen to the stories and enjoy the sounds of a classical musician. BREWERY LANE THEATRE & ARTS CENTRE Castle Street t w f BreweryLaneDramaSociety Brewery Lane Drama Society pm On Culture Night, Brewery Lane Theatre & Arts Centre will host the animated Film Song of the Sea in the Theatre and then have a Music/Folk evening in the Tearoom. Song of the Sea tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse the last Sealchild who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land. The film is a production of Cartoon Saloon, Kilkenny and is directed by Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells). It features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny. Music is by composer Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kíla, both of whom previously collaborated on The Secret of Kells. The Tudor Artisan Hub is producing a joint Culture Night art installation project with LIT, Clonmel under the title Walk a mile in my shoes. This is an exciting 2-hour community event, which will create a ½ mile installation of shoes both in Clonmel and in Carrick-on-Suir. In Carrick on Suir the ½ mile walk/installation will take place from the River Suir towards the Ormond Castle/ Tudor Manor House. Anyone can take part. Each person is asked to donate and artistically decorate a shoe which symbolizes themselves or to represent someone they know/used to know. The outside of the shoe represents what we show to the world whilst the inside shows what we keep hidden (Johari Window) This event will end with a short talk, refreshments and music. LIT Students will take photographs and video the event to capture the overall event as well as the individual stories of the shoes. These will be shared at the end of the walk. CLONMEL CAMPUS WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES This Culture Night, Tudor Artisan Hub is challenging two emerging young film makers Rehan Ali (19) and Patrice Cooney (22) to produce two separate short films before Culture Night to be screened on Culture Night. The students were asked to encompass a Shoe theme somehow, and here are synopses of what the students are planning. Soles - by Rehan Ali Is a psychological thriller short that sees a young actress entering the world of theatre only to crumble into that very universe. This student film will leave you asking what is real and what is only a fragment of your imagination, menacingly toying with your mind and the fabric of your inner being. Tall Tales - by Patrice Cooney This short is a comedic story involving a group of teens, who whilst walking in the woods find a single, new, dress shoe in the bush. They each take turns coming up with crazy stories as to how the shoe may have ended up far into the woods, each story more eccentric and dramatic than the last. Who really lost this expensive shoe? Are they anything like any of the stories the group fantasise about? Is the owner coming back to get it?

5 CLONMEL TIPPERARY COUNTY MUSEUM t e museum@tipperarycoco.ie w THE MAIN GUARD Chamber of the Palatine Court, Main Guard, Clonmel. m LIT, CLONMEL CAMPUS t w Walk a mile in my shoes Tipperary County Museum hosts a Lecture with Dr. Ann Wilson on Culture Night. This lecture ties in with the new Exhibition A Message in Time. A picture-postcard collection of a young woman s life in Edwardian Ireland 7.30pm About billion picture postcards circulated worldwide between 1895 and They were quick to write and cheap and easy to send, and there were several postal deliveries a day in many areas. Such cards offer a partial but unusually intimate insight, like that afforded to an eavesdropper, into the casual conversations, observations and humour of the past. This paper uses a collection of picture postcards to visualise the life of a young middle-class woman living and working in Dublin between 1903 and The cards, which were sent to her by family and friends, are examined as massmanufactured artefacts modified by users to personalise, enhance, subvert or otherwise modify their original message. They throw light on how small, unexceptional individuals dealt with everyday family, social and work life, and how they viewed and negotiated the big important issues of the time in Ireland, such as economic survival, emigration, nationalism and the role of women. Portrait pm Free portraits by Vincent Hannon, Artist and Photographer. With permission, the images will become part of the Collection at the National Library. 2-4pm The Tudor Artisan Hub is producing a joint Culture Night art installation project with LIT, Clonmel. This is an exciting 2-hour community event, which will create a ½ mile installation of shoes in both Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir. From Parnell Street, Clonmel the ½ mile long trail of shoes, will end at the LIT Clonmel campus. Anyone can take part. Each person is asked to donate and artistically decorate a shoe which symbolizes themselves or to represent someone they know/used to know. The outside of the shoe represents what we show to the world whilst the inside shows what we keep hidden (Johari Window). This event will end with a short talk, refreshments and music. Students will take photographs and video the event to capture the overall event as well as the individual stories of the shoes. These will be shared at the end of the walk.
