2 CULTURE NIGHT 18 WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY 21 SEPT Now in its thirteenth year, Culture Night is an annual all-island celebration of culture, creativity and the arts. It is made up of hundreds of events across Ireland and internationally. Arts and cultural organisations of all shapes and sizes extend their opening hours on Culture Night, to allow for increased access to the public. Participating venues also programme special and unique events and workshops and everything is available free of charge. In Tipperary this year, Culture Night will be celebrated with performances, live music, tours, talks, art workshops and much more. TIPPERARY CULTURE NIGHT AMBASSADOR To celebrate Culture Night 2018, Tipperary Arts Office has appointed Roseanna Purcell as Culture Night Ambassador. An actor and writer from Littleton, Thurles, Roseanna s work includes Signatories at Kilmainham Gaol, Red Rock for TV3 and most recently, Copper Face Jacks The Musical at The Olympia Theatre. She wrote her first play Test Copy in 2017 and it premiered at Nenagh Arts Centre. You can meet Roseanna when she returns to Nenagh Arts Centre to celebrate Culture Night and launch the specially commissioned exhibition, The Journey - see Nenagh page for more details. Deidre studied fine art in Cork and makes glorious, vibrant oil paintings. She is inspired by the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere and uses intense colours to capture the moment in nature where everything is highlighted. 6 CARRICK-ON-SUIR CARRICK-ON-SUIR LIBRARY Fairgreen, Carrick-on-Suir t w Different Voices - Live Music in the Library pm Different Voices promises to be an evening of superb music curated by the Tudor Artisan Hub. It will feature a range of performers including, Belle Voci, an allfemale choir from Clonmel, pianist Ruth Lavelle playing classical music, Aibreán, a recently formed all girl folk/pop group, Melua, a new acoustic duo and Rubik Grigoryan, a young Armenian boy solo vocalist along with other children from Bridgewater House. Please check the venue website for further details and timings: Two Short Films Tales from the Towpath 8pm Length: 5-10mins Tales from the Towpath is the result of a collaboration of artists, writers, community workers, historians and fisher folk from Clonmel to Kilsheelan and on to Carrick On Suir. This short film captures some of the history, stories and perhaps even secrets of the Suir, and is a powerful reminder of the magic of the Suir Blueway. The film has been created by Rachel Ray and Jack Allen, 4th year students of the Media & Design degree at Limerick Institute of Technology in Clonmel, in collaboration with The Tudor Artisan Hub. If Anyone Asks 8.30pm Length: 60mins If Anyone Asks explores the strange disappearance of an artist and the lengths that people will go to in order to conceal the truth. Who is being protected? Who knows the truth? This short film miniseries is an extraordinary ambitious undertaking coordinated by The Tudor Artisan Hub in collaboration with Writing Changes Lives, in which 5 writers, 2 young emerging film-makers, 15+ cast, a professional artist and production team worked together to bring this from idea to screen for Culture Night Booking for these films is advised, please call the Tudor Artisan Hub on to book. 8 CASHEL Cashel Arts Festival takes place over 4 days, including Culture Night. Events take place across a range of venues and bring to life Cashel's unique heritage sites with street theatre, visual arts and film. Culture Night culminates in a magical lantern parade featuring street performers Saurus. These events are suitable for all ages and give the opportunity to experience historic Cashel Town differently. A great family activity, open to all, kids, parents and grandparents alike! Experience the excitement, energy and satisfaction of making music in-themoment together at these energy packed interactive workshops. Saurus Street Spectacle pm Presumed to be extinct, but here in Cashel for one night only, Saurus, a performance troupe from the Netherlands, are travelling to Cashel with their elaborate dinosaur-like costumes and stilts. An awe inspiring display that will bring Cashel town centre alive. Parade of Light lanterns from Rock of Cashel to town plaza 7.30pm A unique way to experience the magical Rock of Cashel and Cashel town. Everyone will meet up at the Rock with their lanterns to walk as a group through the town to the Plaza, accompanied by the eighteen feet street spectacle artists, Saurus. The group will be led by Dr. Diarmuid O Hurley Pipe Band. At the Plaza, Saurus will then give a full performance for the whole town. Screening of Graduate Films 9pm Come along and experience the great film directors of Ireland s future. A series of four graduate films from Dun Laoighaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology will be shown in the film theatre on the Rock of Cashel. The Short Films selected focus on aspects of modern Irish life: heritage and belonging, isolation, wasting life and the purpose of art.

Everyone is welcome to come along to this workshop with host Elke Wilson to prepare their own lantern to help light up Cashel. Please note that Cashel Arts Festival Lantern Parade is battery powered only Youth Concert and Irish Storytelling 6-7pm See the best of young Cashel talent at this concert in the Cathedral, which includes a range of multi-talented performers. Alternatively, take in a bi-lingual storytelling with Nuala Hayes, an actor, storyteller and radio producer. Nuala has travelled around the country collecting stories and will perform them in Cashel specially for Culture night. Gathering of Light Parade 7pm G Come along with your newly made lanterns (or bring your own!) to the Cathedral grounds where we will start gathering for the Lantern parade through Cashel town. Join this storytelling event to hear Julian Gough read about Rabbit and Bear s adventures in his latest book featuring them. Julian Gough is a novelist, playwright, poet, musician and script-writer who among many other things, wrote the ending to the phenomenally successful computer game Minecraft. Illustrated by Jim Field, the Rabbit & Bear books have been shortlisted twice for the Children s Book of the Year in the Irish Book Awards. Dick Gough (father of Julian) will give an interactive talk on his bog oak sculptures pm Dick lives near Nenagh and is a native of Ballydine. He is a sculptor who works mainly with bog woods. Where possible he seeks to develop the natural shapes already presented in the timber. Julian Gough: Reading from his new novel, Connect 8-9pm Connect is set in the near future and tells a story of family and digital life. An awkward teenage boy gains superhuman abilities while his mother, a geneticist, is discovering a potent alternative to stem cell therapies. CLONMEL CAMPUS Talk on Passive Architechture 7-8pm Spend Culture Night at the museum discovering more about passive architecture, and in particular Quirke s Chemist in Clonmel, in this talk by architect Paul McNally. This talk is in association with Tipperary County Museum s exhibition S.T.A.G. 50 South Tipperary Art Group celebrating its past and present artistic members spanning 50 years.

11 THE MAIN GUARD Chamber of the Palatine Court m A Portrait for Everyone 4pm to late On Culture Night 2017, Artist and Photographer, Vincent Hannon, made 40 new, large-scale photographic portraits. This year he is back by popular demand and has extended his Culture Night slot in an attempt to make more people s portraits. In an age where everyone is snapping digital pictures all the time, Vincent works to create create lasting large format photographs. Why not go along and sit for a portrait or watch Vincent make lasting images that people can take home for free. THE MAIN GUARD Under the Arches of the Main Guard on O Connell St, Clonmel m e info@southtippearyartscentre.ie w A SHOP UNIT IN MITCHELL STREET* M f beehouse arts w Debride 4-7pm Debride is an exhibition of new artwork by local artist, Brigid Teehan, that examine tensions and fragilities surrounding private/public bodies. The show s title Debride is a verb meaning to remove damaged tissue from a wound. It has its origins in 1839, from French débridement, literally an unbridling, from débrider to unbridle, meaning the removal of the headpiece of a horse s harness used to govern and restrain the animal. Also look out for new artwork on display at Beehouse Arts by guest mixed-media artist, Ian Mannion. * please note that at the time of printing this brochure, the venue for this event was unconfirmed, please check venue details with the South Tipperary Arts Centre who will be producing a map of Culture Night activities in Clonmel. Music under the Arches 8pm Enjoy an eclectic set of classical music with rising stars soprano, Kelley Lonergan, and percussionist, Alex Petcu. Whether you re dipping your toe for the first time, or are a seasoned classical music fan, there will be something to delight you at this concert, brought to you by South Tipperary Arts Centre.

12 CLONMEL THE NARROW SPACE GALLERY 14 Mitchel Street, Clonmel t f The Narrow Space Fragments From pm Sculptor, Catherine Greene, spent a month at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris in late Savouring the quiet time to observe the city and engage in the craft of drawing, Catherine completed a large number of drawings of heads, gathered from antiquities and graveyards around Paris. A selection of these drawings will form the core of her exhibition Fragments from which will also include a number of sculptural heads. CLONMEL LIBRARY Clonmel Library, Emmet St, Clonmel t w Fabulous Tales: Family Story Time 4pm An engaging and interactive storytelling session for the whole family. Meet giants, mermaids and dragons when storyteller Simone from StoryGate weaves her yarn. How did the clever mermaid escape from the greedy fisherman? What would you do if you found a dragon s egg? And do you know which giant sleeps under the highest mountain in Germany? Come and listen to these and many more tales in a storytelling event not to be missed!

13 SOUTH TIPPERARY ARTS CENTRE Nelson Street, Clonmel t w f SouthTipperaryArtsCentre INSTALLATION ON THE TESCO ROUNDABOUT Community Drawings Project Boland s Clonmel 6pm, 7pm and 8pm Poet and writer CJ Boland is best remembered for his comic poems including The Two Travellers and Retrospect (immortalised on the Gashouse Bridge), and 2018 marks the centenary of his death. To mark this occasion, in collaboration with his granddaughter, Jane Clare, South Tipperary Arts Centre will produce a theatrical adaptation of Boland s hilarious short story The Boatmen of Clonmel, which local actors in 19th century costume will perform, accompanied by other poems from his collections to vividly bring to life the characters and locations of 19th century Clonmel, in a variety of locations around the town, including Clonmel Library. Full details for this event and a map showing all the locations used will be available from South Tipperary Arts Centre closer to the event. Intruder/ a heart amongst the rubble 3-6pm You are invited to discover Shay Hurley s extensive photographic archive on hidden aspects of Suir Island and reflect with artist, Theresia Guschlbauer, and filmmaker, Eimear King, on the conflicted terrain of human intrusion in the natural world and the meaning of heritage. Two Clonmel artists, Maurice Caplice and Diarmuid Vaughan, have collaborated with the Clonmel public to create a structure of drawings that will be installed on the Tesco roundabout for Culture Night The installation will be a vibrant splash of colour and drawing, representative of community creativity and collaboration, be sure to look out for it. Maurice Caplice works in painting, sculpture and sound and his practice involves working with communities. He has exhibited throughout Ireland and Internationally. Diarmuid Vaughan: is an artist, actor, maker, set designer and Chairman of St Mary s Choral Society in Clonmel. Diarmuid s artistic practice is about engaging the public and he has starred in shows throughout Ireland and been the recipient of National Drama awards.

14 CLOUGH- JORDAN FETHARD THOMAS MACDONAGH MUSEUM Main Street, Cloughjordan m w Interpreting Objects in Thomas MacDonagh Museum Collection 4-8pm (drop in anytime) This interactive event will highlight a selection of historic objects from the Thomas MacDonagh Museum, spanning from the mid-19th Century, including sketches, a banner and a Maid of Éireann Harp, symbol of the 1878 Rebellion. Local experts will be on hand to provide information about the objects and those that go along will be invited to produce their own artistic interpretation. Creative help and inspiration will be available from art and craft teacher, Aksana Deane, and a variety of art and craft materials will be available, free of charge. There will be live music and refreshments throughout the event. THE THOLSEL Main Street, Fethard t w Pottery Workshops Workshop 1: 5pm Workshop 2: 5.45pm Workshop 3: 6.30pm Make and paint your own simple pinch pots in these workshops with local potter, Doírín Saurus, who will demonstrate basic pottery techniques and talk about her artistic practice. The completed pinch pots will be glazed and fired by Dóirín in her workshop before being returned to those that take part, two weeks later. Spaces are limited so please call to book. If you would like assistance to get to this event, please call The Artist and the Model (Getting back to work!) 6-9pm Calling all of you interested in making visual art; join this life drawing and painting workshop led by Patricia Hurl and Therry Rudin, aimed at revitalising your artistic practice. This workshop will give you the space to explore materials and mark making while experiencing the collaborative nature of working with a life model. It is hoped that by the end of the evening you will have renewed conviction and assurance in your own art work and a desire to make more. Therry Rudin was born in Switzerland and came to Ireland in 1985, when she lived in Limerick where she founded the art school Studio 55 and published the arts magazine Anima. She was a lecturer in the Fine Art Department of Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Co. Dublin. Therry Rudin has exhibited widely in Ireland and Internationally Patricia Hurl is an artist whose work spans the disciplines of painting, multi-media and collaborative art practice. She was a member of Temple Bar Gallery and Studios from 1986 to 2009, when she moved to Co. Tipperary to set up a new studio space. She regularly collaborates with artist Therry Rudin on Film and Video-Performance art projects and in 2012 they set up an artist-run contemporary art space, Damer House Gallery in Roscrea. 16 NENAGH TIPPERARY CULTURE NIGHT COMMISSION We put an open call out to artists and creatives based in Tipperary, asking them to propose a unique, site specific, temporary artwork specially commissioned for Culture Night. This year the successful artist is Carine Arnakis, an Artist and Illustrator from Romania, with a Masters degree in Advertising Art and Book Illustration. Carine discovered her passion for drawing aged 3, when she would doodle on the walls behind the curtains in her grandparents house! She has been drawing and doodling ever since. NENAGH ARTS CENTRE Banba Square, Nenagh t w The Journey 5.30pm Carine Arnakis s exhibition is called The Journey and you can see it on display for Culture Night at Nenagh Arts Centre. Carine says that she is most inspired by colour in all its forms; colour palettes seen in nature and those created by people. She is also interested in cultural diversity and takes inspiration from folk culture or tribes, such as pattern, oriental miniatures and naïve art. The Journey is a showcase of vibrant illustrations inspired by multicultural Ireland today and informed by folktales and folklore from around the world {Pop} Culture Night 6-8pm What does Culture mean to you? Theatre, Music, Poetry? What if we told you it could be a comic strip, colourful bricks or even an animated cartoon Join us for an evening of Pop Culture and experience something a little different. View amazingly produced LEGO models, create your own brick work of art, chat to a cartoon illustrator or experience an Anime short. Come to Nenagh Arts Centre this Culture Night for an evening of {Pop} Culture, suitable for all the family. The exhibition will be accompanied by a colouring book you can take away, featuring some of the images from the exhibition, plus other drawings illustrating pattern designs inspired by folklore.

The Blue Door Sessions 4-11pm Drop in to the Blue Door Studio for an afternoon and evening of music, poetry, theatre and comedy at The Blue Door Sessions; a new space for performers of any kind to present their work. 18 THURLES CENTRE FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING Stradavoher Business Park, Thurles t w Showcase of art work by Irish Wheelchair Association members: Thurles 4-6pm Every Thursday and Friday, members of the Irish Wheelchair Association meet to be social and make artwork. For Culture Night 2018 they are opening their doors to friends, family and all comers who would like to enjoy their work and ask questions. On display will be a miniature model of the Monaincha historical site and many arts and craft pieces. THE SOURCE ARTS CENTRE THURLES t w thesourceartscentre.ie Culture Night at The Source begins with the opening of Glenn Fitzgerald s exhibition Gappy Being at and is followed by a free gig with acclaimed alternative band Bleeding Heart Pigeons. Glenn Fitzgerald s exhibition 7.30pm Glenn Fitzgerald is an artist from Cashel currently completing his MFA in the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. His work is about a world between worlds - quite dreamy and hazy - it can also have a dingy atmosphere like a mechanic s garage. There are beings in it, all useless and some of them slot into the narrow gaps between actual reality and depiction. Bleeding Heart Pigeons 9-11pm Bleeding Heart Pigeons are made up of Limerick trio Micheál Keating, Cathal Histon and Brendan McInerney and are signed to Virgin Records. They released their debut album, Is, in 2016 and are currently completing their second album. This is a chance to hear tracks from the new album as well as some from Is. Bleeding Heart Pigeons are an incredible Irish band who I ve fallen for in a big way. Brilliant live, as well. Mojo Events are free and bar and café facilities are available on the night. 19 TIPPERARY TOWN TIPPERARY EXCEL Mitchel Street, Tipperary Town t w f Tipperary Excel Film Screening: The Happy Prince 8-11pm The Happy Prince tells the story of the last days in the tragic times of Oscar Wilde, a person who observes his own failure with ironic distance and regards the difficulties that beset his life with detachment and humor.
