1 WYCF General Grant Application Reviewer: Distribution Committee Program Area: Senior Service/Advocacy ORGANIZATION INFORMATION National Inventors Hall of Fame, Inc. Director: Mr. Donald Sedlock North Canton, OH Phone: Mission Our mission is to be a catalyst for change through recognizing inventors/invention, promoting creativity and advancing the spirit of innovation. NIHF was founded in 1973 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), with the mission of recogni History The National Inventors Hall of Fame is the country's largest national nonprofit focused on promoting creativity and advancing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Since our founding in 1973, we have impacted more than two million children, teachers, college students, entrepreneurs and aspiring inventors and recognized the men and women whose inventions have revolutionized our world. The National Inventors Hall of Fame's major programs include the Camp Invention summer program, Club Invention afterschool program, Invention Project middle school program, Invention Playground preschool program, Collegiate Inventors Competition, annual National Inventors Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM Middle and High Schools (Akron, OH), and National Inventors Hall of Fame and Museum (Alexandria, VA). PROJECT INFORMATION Board Participation: 100% Requested Amount: $10, Program Name: Camp Invention Summer STEM Programs Summary Camp Invention is a week-long summer enrichment program with curricula focused on developing creativity, inventive thinking, and problem-solving skills through fun, hands-on STEM activities. Each year's curriculum is developed and inspired by real-life role models, the National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees and finalists of our Collegiate Inventors Competition. PROPOSAL NARRATIVE Description Providing underserved children, the Camp Invention experience is a priority to NIHF's mission, which works to inspire creativity in all children, including traditionally underrepresented groups such as girls, minorities, innercity youth, and families who cannot pay the $225 fee. Scholarship funds are awarded on a full/partial basis with parents paying a portion of the fee. A $10,000 grant will provide scholarship assistance for as many as 100 children. Requesting a stipend from families provides a sense of ownership and encourages daily attendance. The local program director determines the level of scholarships provided. Fees cover all programmatic expenses; there is no cost to the local school, district, or educators Each day builds on the previous activities and culminates with inventions/prototypes created through team and individual effort. Camp Invention curricula supports Common Core State Standards. The Next Generation Science and Engineering Draft Framework includes engineering design principles embedded in many of the Camp Invention curricula through eight components of a K-12 science and engineering curriculum: asking questions (science) and defining problems (engineering); developing and using models; planning and carrying out investigations; analyzing and interpreting data; using mathematics and computational thinking; constructing explanations (science) and designing solutions (engineering); engaging in argument from evidence; obtaining, evaluating and
2 communication information. Camp Invention's approach encourages children to create, test, and re-create, which allows them to experience the reward of pushing past barriers and failure in the trial and error process. Educators gain experience using scientific inquiry and engineering design in teaching and receive professional development and hands-on application of training during Camp Invention. The opportunity impacts classroom instruction as teachers' self-report integrating Camp Invention's teaching approach into their regular school year teaching. During the summer of 2018, school districts will implement the all new Camp Invention Fast Forward curricula. Expected Outcome and Sustainability The Camp Invention program provides a safe environment by partnering with school districts to implement and host the program. Each program is managed and taught by local certified teachers. An 8:1 student to staff ratio is maintained to ensure appropriate supervision and guidance is provided when needed. Training and on-going support is provided to all Camp Invention programs. The Camp Invention program is designed to transform ordinary classrooms into four unique learning atmospheres. We use immersive storylines, and provide decorations and ideas on how instructors can create a fun, safe, and engaging environment that is conducive to learning, testing new ideas, and building one's confidence toward STEM concepts and ultimately STEM related career paths. The 2018 Camp Invention Fast Forward curricula show children that their ideas can one day become reality. From learning about self-driving cars to dissecting a mechanical robot dog, this curriculum inspires creativity and a passion for learning. Each day of camp, participants will experience the four different modules outlined below. 1. In Optibot : children explore sensors by experimenting with their own Optibot -- a small driving bot that senses changes in dark and light surfaces. They design tracks for their Bots to follow while exploring different modes of transportation. 2. During Stick to It : students practice perseverance while building sock launchers, dancing dinosaurs and wire circuits. 3. In Mod My Mini Mansion : Participants receive small boxes to arrange for their home's structure and then get to work designing their smart homes inside and out. From talking mirrors to toasters that know how to cook their favorite foods, children invent and build models of these inventions throughout the week. 3. During Robotic Pet Vet : Children become robotic pet veterinarians. They use real tools to take apart robotic dogs and compare their inner mechanics to the biology of animals. Then they receive their very own robotic dog to personalize and bring home. Children's Camp Invention experience generates: - Creativity and inventiveness; - Critical thinking and creative problem solving; - Self-direction; - Entrepreneurial mindset; - Cooperation and collaboration; - Excitement, interest and motivation about STEM; and - Understanding of connections among STEM knowledge and skills. In addition, the program combats summer slide by engaging children in a fun, STEM-based program and aligns with State and National Education Standards and supports Common Core State Standards. Teachers' Camp Invention experience: - Reinvigorates interest in teaching STEM; - Gives experience using scientific inquiry and engineering design; - Provides professional development and hands-on application during Camp Invention; - Impacts classroom instruction (teachers report they integrate Camp Invention's teaching approach into their regular school year teaching); and - Allows them to see students' progress and engagement in a different setting. Once the program has concluded, parent, participants, and teacher surveys are administered. Surveys are designed to measure the key results of program objectives, gauge individual reactions to the program, and assist in curriculum design and revision. This feedback is important in developing the next summer's curriculum. Collaboration In collaboration with, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), The National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) operates the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum at the USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. The National Inventors Hall of Fame is also proud to be a Smithsonian Affiliate. Smithsonian Affiliations is a national outreach program that develops long-term, collaborative partnerships with museums, educational, and cultural organizations to enrich communities with Smithsonian resources. The National Inventors Hall of Fame partners with over 1,400 schools and districts and more than 15,000 educators annually. Platte and Campbell County School Districts (Wheatland/ Gillette) are both long-time Camp Invention partners. In 2017, Camp Invention reached 64 students and 5 educators in the Platte County School District and 53 students and 4 educators in the Campbell County School District.
