8 2018 DAVID P. GOODWIN OUTSTANDING NEIGHBOR AWARD RECIPIENT JOSEPH B. REILLY 8 He has reached the highest levels in New Hampshire s financial industry, building a niche bank that has successfully integrated itself to become part of the largest and oldest mutual bank in the country. But success was not an automatic path for Joseph B. Reilly, and he admits it. Joe grew up in tiny Antrim, New Hampshire, graduating from ConVal High School in Peterborough. In a childhood that included milking cows and spreading dirt, he credits his humble beginnings and work ethic observed in his parents for determination in his professional aspirations. The spark for a career in banking began as a sophomore in high school when Joe was given the opportunity to work at the First National Bank in Peterborough. From there, his interest grew and he went on to earn
9 Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Business from the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire. He landed his first job at Indian Head National Bank in Nashua upon graduation, moving forward in a progression of increasingly senior positions with various banks over the next twenty years, ultimately creating Centrix Bank in 1999, a billion dollar financial institution that became part of Eastern Bank in When (Joe was) asked to spearhead a capital campaign to ensure a permanent home for NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire, Joe stepped up and ensured its success. As Joe continued to navigate the complexities of the banking industry over the years, his commitment to community grew. He admits that his experience as an employee campaign coordinator with the United Way early in his career made a deep impression about the importance and role of non-profit organizations. In 1992, Joe was integral to bringing the business sector to the threepronged approach of forming Manchester Neighborhood Housing Services to address issues in the Center City. He maintained his association through the years, acknowledging the complicated landscape NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire navigates today to create affordable housing, engage with residents, and revitalize neighborhoods. As Joe states, the face of Manchester would be very different today without this organization. When asked several years ago to spearhead a capital campaign to ensure a permanent home for NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire, Joe stepped up and ensured its success. Many organizations that address core needs in our state have benefitted from Joe Reilly s generosity of time and resources, including Granite United Way, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, Catholic Medical Center, the Moore Center, and the University of New Hampshire. And personal honors along the way have chronicled the difference he has made, most notably the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce s Citizen of the Year in 2013, one of New Hampshire s Most Influential People in 2012, and one of the Leaders for the 21st Century in 2000 by Business NH Magazine. Joseph B. Reilly is proud of his New Hampshire roots, and NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire s role to ensure that residents of this state have access to quality, affordable housing. He has been and continues to be an outstanding neighbor. 9

13 SPEAKER PROFILES JACKIE & MIKE THOMPSON BOSCAWEN HOMEOWNERS Jackie and Mike Thompson will soon celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary. Mike is a full-time student at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, studying wildlife and conservation biology while working a part-time job on campus. Jackie is the Housing Coordinator at New England College in Henniker, and plays the piano at her church. Prior to purchasing their home, they rented an apartment in Concord. They knew they wanted to own a home in the future, and participated in the educational opportunities offered by HOMEteam to be prepared. In August 2017, they participated in our Financial Literacy workshop, followed by an eight-hour First-Time Home Buyer seminar in October. They met one-on-one several times over the next few months with a homeownership counselor, who made recommendations and helped them develop an action plan based on their interests and needs. In May 2018, Mike and Jackie purchased their home in Boscawen. JANINE WOODWORTH MANCHESTER RESIDENT Janine Woodworth has been a Manchester resident for 13 years, and is an active volunteer in initiatives to strengthen the Center City neighborhood. Janine participated in NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire s Resident Leadership/ Neighborhood Ambassador Program, and she has since spearheaded various beautification activities, including installing a dog waste dispenser at Enright Park, on-going gardening and clean ups in Enright Park, as well as other neighborhood improvement events. Janine will be our volunteer point of contact for the new Parkside Community Garden. She has had a steady presence at block parties and clothing drives. Janine attends monthly Center City Neighborhood Group meetings, and provides a positive voice to the role of resident leadership. Her involvement and actions make a difference in the neighborhood. 13
