5 Letter from the Executive Director Greater. How would you describe? Bigger? Better? More abundant? Special? I see our greater community as all of these, and the great things our members are doing to support our community is important and valued. The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce is here as a community partner. The Chamber serves the towns of Freeport, Pownal and Durham the same as the school district, RSU5. However, we are sister communities to Yarmouth and Brunswick and extend our neighborly outreach to other surrounding towns and cities. It truly is an honor to be a part of such a network of support, energy and creativity. To feature some of the amazing, innovative, extraordinary work of our members please notice our front cover. Wolfe s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment has become a leader in integrating agriculture and environment. Creating a community educated and involved in safe food production and its connection to a healthy planet exemplifies greater in every sense of the word. The Chamber was pleased to honor WNC with the LL Bean Community Involvement Award 2017 for their vision and the work being done to realize that. Freeport Community Services goes above and beyond when it comes to implementing support opportunities. Their work gets recognized, which is well deserved, with three awards this past year: Advocate Award by United Way; the 6 Who Care Agency of Distinction; and most recently, the Governor s Award for Service and Volunteerism as Outstanding Nonprofit Volunteer Program. We re lucky to have an organization in our community doing such intentional work. My first year with the Chamber has been fast, furious and fun! Truly, it has been great! New initiatives include our women s networking group, WIN Together!; our first industry-specific event, Fashionably Freeport; Coffee and Conversation; and the planning of the Chamber s 10th Anniversary in Discover our events, and others, in the newly featured calendar included in this guide. As we strive to better support our members and residents, we ve created what we hope is a true beneficial resource. Enjoy the stories, patronize the advertisers, find your next event to attend. If you have interest in any Chamber initiatives or ideas on collaboration opportunities, please contact me. I m always open for conversations. Thank you for welcoming me into this special, i.e. great, community. My best~ Shawna Chigro-Rogers Executive Director Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce shawna@freeportmainechamber.com 3
6 About Our Community Freeport On the north shores of Casco Bay sits the quaint town of Freeport. Most people from away associate Freeport with abundant shopping. And this is true. But Freeport is made of so much more. It is rich in history. Did you know that Freeport was once known as shoe town? Shoe manufacturers such as H. E. Davis and E. B. Mallett changed the industrial revolution for Freeport from cotton and textiles to shoes. Many shoe companies followed including Cumberland County Shoe Company, Freeport Shoe Company, and of course L. L. Bean with the production of its famous hunting boot. If you re a fancier of shoes, Freeport is still a great place to find your favorite moccasins. Pownal Pownal, also in Cumberland County, is the proud home of Bradbury Mountain State Park one of the five original state parks in Maine. Hikers come from all over to make the modest climb to the top of Bradbury Mountain. The prize? The grand vista views. It s no wonder Pownal prides itself in its rural lifestyle. Agriculture was the largest industry as the town settled. Crops and animals were raised for barter or personal consumption. Today, not many farms still exist but the goal of preserving the rural lifestyle is till priority. Durham The only of the three located in Androscoggin County, it is the quiet sister of the three. It is known for its hills, fields and forests, and possibly for its most famous former resident, author Stephen King. Durham had its hand in the shoemaking business as well. Oak bark was used to tan hides into leather. The River Road/South Bend vicinity was once a vibrant trading center of the area. Other businesses included an apothecary, a hotel, a tavern and a bakery. With the railroads bypassing Durham, businesses followed to Lisbon and Auburn. However, it seems Durham is proud to boast a place where time slows down and life is a little less hurried. 4 Freeport Insider s Guide

10 2018 Freeport Featured Member Freeport Community Services A Triple Crown Winner! By Shawna Chigro-Rogers A Triple Crown winner is rare and special. Our very own Freeport Community Services is also rare and very, very special indeed. During this past year, FCS was recognized for their work by three organizations: WCSH 6 Who Care: Agency of Distinction Maine Governor s Office: Outstanding Nonprofit Volunteer Program United Way of Greater Portland: Thrive Advocate Award Distinction. It all started with seven friends supporting neighbors out of one of their garages. Now 11 employees and more than 600 volunteers later, FCS programs include free transportation, medical equipment, health programs, and nutrition services. FCS was selected for this award based on their comprehensive and innovative services to our community, their dedication to engaging volunteers, and their commitment to achieving results. Definitely distinctive. Outstanding. I mentioned the more than 600 volunteers. It truly takes a village, doesn t it? Each year, 2,500 plus residents from Freeport and Pownal access services from FCS. More than 46,000 residents in those towns visit the center annually. FCS volunteers clocked in well over 27,000 hours! That represents nearly $600,000 in fiscal support! It s no wonder FCS was recognized for the significate improvements made in our community as a result of the dedicated volunteer service. Advocate. The United Way of Greater Portland honored FCS for their commitment in helping our community thrive in education with their Read to Succeed program. In its eighth year, the Read to Succeed program trains volunteer readers for in-home day cares to share stories and promote the love of reading. Without a library to attend as in traditional schools, the program brings the library to the children. And we all know, Oh the places you ll go! So much is support is generated, better yet, achieved through Freeport Community Services. Visit their website at to learn more about just how special they really are. 8 Freeport Insider s Guide

14 Preserving Freeport s Farm Legacy & Looking to the Future Wolfe s Neck Center By Allison Carrier, Communications and Development, WNC Some of the youngest cows, the heifers, have the best view on the Wolfe s Neck property a lush, green pasture lined with trees, panning a coastal view out to Casco Bay. A recent renovation of the historic Pote Barn on Wolfe s Neck Road transformed this pasture from a dilapidated underused space, to the new home of a herd of heifers. Grazing cows and a restored barn signify much of the growth happening at Wolfe s Neck Center. In 2015, they launched the Organic Dairy Research & Farmer Training Program in partnership with Stonyfield, with a goal to address the growing age of farmers across the region and consumer demand for organic milk. The two-year residential apprenticeship trains new farmers, introducing them to a career in the dairy industry, and stressing the importance of farming in a way that is beneficial for the soil and future health of our planet. Wolfe s Neck s position as a central player in addressing broader issues of food and farming goes beyond the dairy program. In October 2017, Wolfe s Neck Farm changed its name to Wolfe s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment. Over the past several years, they have developed a vision and crafted plans to transform Wolfe s Neck into a leading center that is building a community of people who care about the future of food. Wolfe s Neck Center has outlined a strategic plan to develop the campus into one that immerses visitors of all ages in the work they are doing to educate on topics like regenerative farming and the source of our food. The nonprofit is in the midst of the Building Up to Root Down capital campaign, raising the funds needed to preserve the farm s rich past while building the infrastructure needed to serve the over 30,000 individuals who visit the farm each year. The Pote Barn mentioned above, where the heifers now graze overlooking the ocean, is an important example of the work they are doing to maintain the legacy of this deeply rooted place. Formally known as the Pote House Barn, the post and beam structure overlooking Casco Bay was built in the 1760s by Captain Greenfield Pote and shares its site with one of the oldest houses in Freeport. As housing for the heifer herd and additional farming operations, this iconic structure will continue a legacy of almost 250 years of farming activity. Renovation of these historic structures began in June of 2017 with the meticulous work done by Freeport-based Houses and Barns by John Libby. The barn was dismantled through an extensive numbering system, each post and beam restored as needed, and rebuilt on its original footprint. An additional barn was built below by local contractor Mark Vaschon for use in the new heifer facility. After years of vacancy, the area is now being revitalized for farming once again. Ben Jensen, Livestock & Dairy Manager at Wolfe s Neck, said of the project, It is very exciting to get the Pote Barn full of cattle again. Not only is it crucial to our growing organic dairy operation, it is an important part of the heritage and tradition of this place. As the campus continues to develop to meet the needs of visitors over the coming years, much of what the community loves about Wolfe s Neck is remaining the same: the center will always be free and open for the public to enjoy year round, where visitors can greet the animals in the Livestock Education barn, hike the trails, or camp along Casco Bay. Wolfe s Neck Center will also continue to play an active role in farming, growing organic produce for their Farm Store, Farm Café, and CSA, and increasing the amount of produce contributions to local food pantries through season extension efforts. As Wolfe s Neck Center grows its impact, it has expanded in reach to connect visitors of all ages to food and farming. Support from their membership program has brought an array of new Community & Visitor Programs, ranging from Goat Hikes, to Afternoon Milking Tours, to Farmer for the Morning, and more. Visitors can also connect to topics around agriculture through in-depth workshops for the backyard gardener. Wolfe s Neck continues to focus research initiatives on regenerative agriculture, developing ways to put the carbon that pollutes the air back into the soil, and trains apprentices to farm using regenerative techniques like grazing management, cover cropping, and no till seeding. As a nonprofit, Wolfe s Neck Center draws upon a rich history of innovation and experimentation to continue the legacy of this place today. Through regenerative farming, innovative soil health research, and visitor interactions, the land is now used as an educational resource to create a healthier planet for all.
