1 This Week s Speaker Mr. Dave Barthmuss, General Motors A Celebration of Earth Day As head of communications for the automaker s largest region in the United States, Dave is responsible for a wide variety of public relations and grassroots assignments, including engaging GM and its brands with key stakeholder groups to help communicate the company s environmental, technology and policy initiatives. Dave also serves as the official spokesperson for GM throughout its Western Region. Working closely with GM s global headquarters in Detroit and its Western Region executive staff in Southern California, Dave provides strategic guidance to help raise awareness of and credit among key communities for GM s cutting -edge products and alternative fuel, hybrid and electric vehicle technology programs. These include GM s Project Driveway, the largest real world test fleet of fuel cell electric vehicles in history, and the recent launch of the new 2011 Chevrolet Volt, the world s first electric vehicle with extended range. Prior to moving his family to California, Dave coordinated GM s Environment, Energy & Sustainability communications activities at its global headquarters in Detroit, working closely with the company s Chief Environmental Officer and its Public Policy Center staff. He has also held senior-level positions at one of the world s largest public relations agencies, worked for Michigan State Legislature and began his professional career as a newspaper reporter. 2 President s Message Get involved with Rotary! Like most members, you probably joined the Rotary Club of Los Angeles to help improve the quality of life in your community and make a difference in the world. For more than a century, our LA5 has been providing vital services within our communities and throughout the world. LA5 s achievements are the result of dedicated member action and participation. The more you get involve in Rotary activities, the more committed and connected you will become to our Club. Rotary, in a way, is like any other organization... you will only get back what you put into it... except with Rotary your contributions are leveraged with others contributions and you get to take credit for the collective inputs and successes of all Rotarians! Act now and volunteer your time and talents in those areas that are important to you and where you can make an impact, large or small. Here are a few ways to become more active in LA5... and beyond: Volunteer to serve on one or more club committees. Sit with different people at each meeting so you get a chance to connect with everyone in your club. Participate in your club s service projects and, whenever possible, get your family and friends involved, too. Recommend a colleague or friend for membership in LA5. Bringing in new member is a key responsibility of all Rotarians and is the life-blood of our Club. Make up a missed meeting at another club and bring some ideas back to our members. Attend our District Conference May for fun, fellowship and get to know Rotarians from other clubs. Work with one of the New Generations youth service programs Rotaract, Interact and Youthact sponsored by our Club. Join one of the many Rotary Fellowships - Rotarians with common recreational interests, hobbies, or vocations Attend the RI Convention in New Orleans May with other LA5 members and learn just how international and interconnected Rotary service is... learn what the international really is in Rotary International.

Welcome New Members Miranda Lau is the Founder and Managing of Oriental Wellness, a Chinese culture based acupuncture, health spa, wellness and holistic health clinic in Beverly Hills.

She enjoys golf, hiking, reading and community outreach. She speaks Mandarin, Cantonese and English. She joined Rotary because she wants to give back to the greater community.

She earned a Bachelor s Degree in International Communications from the American University in Paris, and an Associates Degree in Occupational Studies from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in

Todd Johnson is her sponsor. Jenny Eloise Rieu is the owner of Nostars Destiny Productions. She earned a Bachelor s Degree in International Communications from the American University in Paris, and an Associates Degree in Occupational Studies from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She enjoys painting, hiking, traveling and visiting museums. She joined Rotary because she wants to give back to the community. She speaks French, English and Italian, and plays the piano. About 120 attended the dinner that included District 5280 Club President's and their guests. The President's Dinner was held at the Sohyang Korean BBQ Restaurant at 3435 Wilshire Blvd. Special guests included Past Rotary International President ( ) DK Lee, the first RI world President from South Korea; Past RI Paul Netzel and Diane; District 5280 Governor Doug Baker and Connie; District 5280 Governor Nominee Lew Bertrand; and, several members of the District 5280 Leadership Team. Attendees enjoyed delicious Korean barbequed short ribs, tasty buffet dishes, and were entertained by authentic Korean Dancers.

6 Rotary Scholarship Committee at Work The LA5 Scholarship Committee, shown to the left, met on April 7 at the Braille Institute to work through over 50 applications from High School seniors applying for help in their college studies. After a second meeting on May 19, this committee will give $165,000 in scholarships to the most deserving students at the Rotary meeting on June 3.
