7 That s a wrap! THAT S A WRAP! Our verdict from Mexico City Last week the GTR team had the pleasure of returning to Mexico City for our annual Finance Conference. The conference date was timely Mexican presidential elections in July had seen a landslide victory for the new regime of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. While the US administration s Trade War with China ratcheted up, Nafta renegotiation rumbled to a close. A packed 1 day agenda of expert-led discussion and networking awaited, and for those involved with Mexican business, there s been no shortage of talking points in recent months Here are some of the key outcomes: What a difference a year makes Casting our minds back to the previous instalment of GTR Mexico in October 2017, anxiety surrounding the renegotiation and potential cancellation of Nafta was palpable. With the looming possibility of Trump s 20% tax on Mexican exports to the US, plans for fixed investment and business expansion hung in the balance. A lot of water has flowed under the Rio Grande bridge since then. In late September 2018 the United States- Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) was struck, providing a regulatory framework for more than $1.2 trillion worth of trade. Though the agreement still requires approval by the three national legislatures, North American free trade looks likely to continue relatively unscathed. But how much has really changed?... The devil is in the detail Expert speakers actively involved with trade regulation and negotiation on both sides of the Mexico-US border provided attendees with valuable insight into the realities and implications of the USMCA. Relatively little has changed in the deal s current form, according to US trade regulation specialist Matthew Nicely. The most significant development impacts the automotive industry, where the deal aims to have more cars and truck parts made in North America. During a debate on the impact of geopolitical volatility on Mexican trade and investment, speakers opined that it remains unclear exactly how the USMCA will impact Mexican corporates. A slowdown in the inbound direct investment pipeline is expected while the picture becomes clearer. In the meantime, the role of Export Credit Agencies will remain crucial to facilitating investment in Mexican infrastructure and industry. Cash is still king for Mexican corporates Perhaps unsurprisingly given the persistent uncertainty surrounding international trade and financial flows, corporate speakers confirmed they are still focused on working capital optimisation and financial risk management. While a raft of innovative and tech-based solutions are available to Mexican companies besides more traditional trade financing, the flexibility (or lack thereof) of various financing structures and solutions was highlighted by one audience member as a barrier to use. From the financial covenants governing receivables financing facilities to demanding export financing documentary processes, it seems more work is required to broaden accessibility. With Mexico s Fintech Law in effect since September 2018, a fertile environment for product development could provide some compelling offerings for Mexico s corporate treasures, financiers and credit managers.
