1 Lake Luzerne Senior Center Newsletter 539 Lake Avenue, Lake Luzerne, NY (518) August 2012 Volume 24 Town Town of Lake Luzerne celebrated our Annual Annual Local History Day! Day! Darren Bonaparte Mohawk historian, author and creator of the Wampun Chronicles Website and the Charlotte County Militia colonials held demonstrations. Both presentations gave information on the life and times of our ancestors. We look forward to next year s local history day when both groups will return, Saturday, July
2 Book Chat Empire of the Summer Moon Author: S.C. Gwynne Written by Bob Freedman This non-fiction, historical account of the forty-year war between the Comanche Indians ( The People ), and the settlers for control of the American West, covers the period It is the story of the most powerful Indian tribe in our history. The story covers the well remembered battle of the Alamo (1836), the turnabout Battle of San Jacinto some six weeks later, which marked the end of the Mexican rule north of the Rio Grande and the birth of a sovereign nation called the Republic of Texas ( ). The story describes in great detail, the establishment of The Comancheria -the lands of the Comanche, (which occupied much of what we know today as the State of Texas), which began just beyond the frontier settlements in that area beginning in That is the year that Mr. Gwynne chooses to begin his account of the beginning of the struggle. He then takes great pain in intertwining the story of roaming Comanche bands with the capture of Cynthia Ann Parker at age nine. She lives her entire adult life as the wife of a Comanche chief and raises three children born to them starting around One of her sons becomes the last and greatest chief of the Comanche (Quanah). The author tells his story on many levels. All of which are an integral part of the rise and fall of the Indians of the Plains. The introduction of the horse and the ability of the Comanche horsemen gained them the reputation as the best in the world at the time. Enabling the Indian warrior complete mastery over anyone who found himself in their path. Later the introduction of the Colt pistol as the instrument which brought about a level playing field between the Texans and the Indian warriors. Perhaps one of the most noteworthy discoveries in this text is the fact that among the many reasons for the demise of the Indian bands (which we mistakenly call tribes, the most important was the devastation caused by the waves of the white man disease. Certainly the shrinking buffalo herds, the encroachment of hundreds of thousands of settlers on their lands, and the aggressive tactics of the Rangers, were all contributing factors, but none equaled the impact of the diseases which reduced the number of Indians dramatically throughout this period of time. The author fully takes into account the effect that the Comanche s had in holding up the development of the new American nation. His account encompasses Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, the destruction of the buffalo herds, and the arrival of the railroads. Against this backdrop the drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, is presented as she becomes known throughout the United States as the White Squaw who refused to return to the civilized world until her capture by the Texas Rangers in More famous still was her son Quanah, a
3 warrior and chief who was never defeated and who fighting strategies made him a legend. Although tedious in parts, it holds your interest and the personalities of the main characters override the narrativeas well they should as this period of American history gave us many of the strong-willed individuals who literally carved a great nation out of the wilderness west of the territory known as the Louisiana Purchase. How I Met My Spouse Years, Distance and Delays Couldn t Keep Them Apart I first spotted Carole sitting by the window in our eighth-grade math class. We never really spoke to each other, but we had many mutual friends. I even took her cousin to the high school prom before graduating in I joined the Army and later graduated from college, and Carole also went off to college. We eventually married other people, Carole in 1958 and me in 72, but both of us were divorced in Carole spent many years working in Georgia, while I continued to live in Garden City, New York, where I d grown up. Many years and several high school reunions later, Carole and I connected at our 50 th class reunion. We began a longdistance relationship and, after many letters and phone calls and a few visits, we decided to get engaged on Valentine s Day Carole was to fly in to Albany, New York, for a lovely dinner that evening, but a snowstorm delayed her flight. The plane landed at 20 minutes to midnight, but the plows took a while to clear a path for the passengers. I finally saw Carole, embraced her and slipped the engagement ring on her finger at 11:55 p.m., just in time for Valentine s Day. We were to be married on a cruise ship while docked in Juneau, Alaska, in September, but a mix-up got in the way. So instead, we were married in a garden at Pearson s Pond in Juneau-with our taxi s meter running the whole time, to the tune of $ It was all worth it!
