15 An Interview with ASHRAE Fellow Member Charles H. Culp, Ph.D., LEED AP, HBDP History: ASHRAE- Houston Chapter If you look up what it means to be an ASHRAE Fellow you would find that part of their mission is to share knowledge, experience and enhance ASHRAE s technical image. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Charles (Charlie) Culp and learning first-hand what that looks like in real life. Currently a Professor in the Department of Architecture and the Associate Director of the Energy Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M University, Dr. Culp started with B.S. in Physics from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics with an EE minor from Iowa State University. Like many professionals, at first glance this may not seem like a path that would have led him to HVAC, so I started our interview by asking him about it. Since you didn t start out as a Mechanical Engineer by degree, what attracted and lead you to the HVAC industry? Oh that s an easy one, he responded. Dr. Culp went on to explain his early career. His first professional job was as a chief engineer of a small company with around 30 employees. He said they worked with interactive video graphics before there were personal computers (PCs). He explained that it was one of those 6 & ½ day a week jobs where they created lots of prototypes. The job had nothing to do with energy or the HVAC industry, and eventually he stuck his head up and started looking for the next opportunity. Did you know? Dr. Culp s Key Honors, Awards That opportunity came in the form of a job 2015 Received the E. K. Campbell Award with Honeywell. He started as a designer 2013 Awarded ASHRAE s Distinguished Service Award. primarily on the electronics side in their Elected to the ASHRAE Board of Directors commercial buildings group. He d always as a Director-at-Large for a 3-year term. been mechanically inclined and was also 2010 President of ASHRAE s College of Fellows. always interested in energy. This made 2006 Invited by TEKES (the Finnish equivalent of NSF) Honeywell a natural fit and he loved it. Dr. to review over 30 energy efficiency programs in Culp became a fellow at Honeywell (which is Finland. Traveled to Finland to perform this review. an equivalent to a professor's tenure). This aided his longevity with the company and allowed him to work on very interesting projects and be the architect of systems. Eventually, rather than move to Minnesota and into the cold with Honeywell, he made the choice to move to Emerson. Dr. Culp added as far as the mechanical engineering part goes If someone is designing controls for mechanical equipment, they really need to understand how it works. While speaking with Dr. Culp, he made his career path sound natural. But I discovered looking a little deeper, one of the most humbling experiences you can have as a young engineer is to read the resume Article by Victoria Herman Know a Fellow we should interview? Let us know! 1

16 An Interview with ASHRAE Fellow Member Charles H. Culp, Ph.D., LEED AP, HBDP History: ASHRAE- Houston Chapter of an ASHRAE fellow. Among many publications, patents, honors and awards, ASHRAE is a theme that can be noticed in Dr. Culps throughout. While he currently serves on the Technology Council, in the past he s served on numerous other committees, was on the board of directors from 2012 to 2015, and has been a member since the 1980s. The rest of our conversation lead into ASHRAE and his current role at Texas A&M. How did you get involved with ASHRAE, and what drove you to participate at the level that you did? While working at Honeywell Dr. Culp expressed interest to his employer about being a member of his industry professional society (ASHRAE). At that time, Honeywell was a big supporter and very active with ASHRAE so they agreed to his request to be supported in going to all of the meetings. He said a key to him was getting to attend all of the meetings so that he could actually form connections and have meaningful involvement with the society. How did he end up at Texas A&M? Through connections at ASHRAE! Dr. Culp met and worked with Dr. Haberl and Dr. Claridge through ASHRAE. When he considered leaving Emerson to start his own company, they suggested that he come to Texas (from Iowa) and check out the university. Dr. Culp interviewed for a position at the university and became a visiting professor when the pieces clicked into alignment. His life plan was to be a professor as the last career path and he was fortunate to have this path begin about 10 years ahead of his original plan. With a resume of 41 pages of jaw dropping achievements and contributions to the engineering and HVAC industry, I had to know what stood out to him. Of all the work you have done, both professionally and with ASHRAE, are there one or more particular accomplishments that you are most proud of? As Dr. Culp responded to my question over the phone, I could almost see his face light up from the enthusiasm in his voice. He mentioned several things that made him proud. First, while at Honeywell, he came up with Delta 21. This was a PLC based BMCS for small to medium buildings. Next he explained that at one point in time, services had been offered to a Article by Victoria Herman Know a Fellow we should interview? Let us know! Did you know? Dr. Culp s abbreviated Resume by the numbers: 35+ times recognized for industry contributions 30 publications 10 Authoritative references 70+ Peer Reviewed Conference Proceeding 70+ Conference Presentations / Invited Talks 11 Software programs developed 30+ Patents, Copy Rights & Registered Marks 70+ Contracts and Grants awarded 2

17 An Interview with ASHRAE Fellow Member Charles H. Culp, Ph.D., LEED AP, HBDP History: ASHRAE- Houston Chapter military client that Honeywell didn t currently possess. So he led the effort to create the system and did it on time and within budget. Another item that Dr. Culp is proud of is the continuous commissioning effort provided by the lab at Texas A&M. He explained that with hands on training for students, they have created the equivalent of a teaching hospital for building energy systems. When their team leaves a building, they are proud to remove 10 to 20% of building energy use and avoid the need for major retrofits. As a benefit, the graduating students are ready to go to work immediately and need very little on the job training. Dr. Culp sees this as an important trend we ll need to watch as the focus will likely move away from energy cost savings to more energy based savings. This led into the last topic of Dr. Culp s interview and his proudest achievement: creating an air conditioner that doesn t use any refrigerant. Together with Dr. Claridge and others from the University and ASHRAE, Dr. Culp has had a breakthrough in a process that takes water vapor out of the air and allows for a new innovative way path forward. The team is currently working on prototypes of the equipment that should be ready next year. Dr. Culp envisions that this type of technology could have a market potential to replace 60% to 80% for the current traditional refrigerant based air conditioning. Along with Dr. Haberl, Dr. Culp serves as a faculty advisor for the ASHRAE Student Branch at A&M. In this role and as a professor working with graduate and PhD students, I imagine he gets quite used to giving advice to young engineers. But for those of us that didn t have the pleasure of being one of his students, I had to ask that timeless question to wrap up our interview. What advice would you give to a young engineer entering the HVAC field? His advice? Depending on what your career goals are, you should really consider getting a PhD. It can be a differentiator in the industry. He also added that if they are considering going into academics, they should get industry experience first. And of course, he added that young people should get involved with their professional societies immediately because you ll make contacts that will last a lifetime! After listening to Dr. Culp speak about a field he s doing pioneering work in and hearing his passion, I can t help but be eager to follow the progress of his new equipment. Perhaps one day I ll be designing buildings using equipment created from his breakthrough. Article by Victoria Herman Know a Fellow we should interview? Let us know! 3
